WANTED: Anyone interested in a Seattle-Eastside exchange day?

I have not visited the forums forever but I had a few minutes and now I am all worked up. Anyone interested in having our usual Seattle-Eastside (Bellevue, etc.) next month or so? Please let me know. I would love to see all you guys. Thanks

Is it similar to the March Swap in Redmond? Bring anything we want to swap, pre-arrange trades? I might be interested if it's not Memorial Weekend.
Let us know a date and the basic rules.

I am not sure of the species. I was only told "Timber Bamboo". When I contact the person that has the bamboo hopefully I can get more information. I will also find out if they will let people dig at other times. Christina - I will find out if I can get some shippable size plants when I see it this weekend. Bill

Hi Mary, I had a blast! Tracie & I brought a whole truckload of plants & left with almost as much. We got a nice mix of good ol' standbyes like dahlias, some rarer treasures (to me anyway) like darmera & black bamboo, some nice herbs, and a couple great tropicals like brugmansia. There wer even a few trees there. For some of the newer gardeners without anything to trade I was able to give away several knifophias (red hot pokers), some perennial fall blooming asters, & others. Everyone there was so generous, no one went home empty handed. There were also a couple of young people there with their parents who got some plants of their own. I know Shilpa gave me a nice butterfly bush for my daughter Jasmine (a buddleia connoisseur). A good place to infect a young gardener. I also brought about 4 or 5 kinds of orchids, 3 kinds of christmas cactus, some orchid cactus, a couple superdwarf bannans, & some other houseplant types. I recieved some wonderful seed trades from Jim's & Linda's huge seed drawers. So there was something there for everyone. :)

Hi all! OP here... Just a follow up for everyone. I managed to find it at a place in Puyallup today via a google search that pulled up a 20 year old article on the PI (local paper) archives. I took a chance and the place was still in business. Woot! I was able to get 4 pounds of it which should get me through the carton of cherries I got yesterday. We're pitting like crazy here (I broke down and got a second pitter. The paring knife was NOT cutting it, so to speak...) and the pie is about to go in the over. FWIW, I called the Pierce County extension office (I took my Master Canner certification through them several years back since King County got rid of the program) and they had no idea who to go to. They suggested two places (McLendons and another local hardware store) as well as ordering it online. I tried calling Target and Walmart as well. No luck there. I'm goingto check out cash-n-carry next time I am over there to see if they have it. I think I'll want to stock up so this does not happen in the future if all goes well with the Great Cherry Experiment Of 2009 =D Honestly, when it comes to canning, I'm usually MUCH more prepared than this. I was caught by surprise at actually finding sour pie cherries at the farmers market (I went there for sweet ones for jam) and when I saw them I had to snap them all up! (being only .50 a pound helped too!) I swear, one of these days I 'm going to bite the bullet and open a canners co-op where we can all buy in bulk from manufacturers for stuff like this and jar, lids, pectin...

zzepherdogg, thank you for the compliment of attributing to me far greater knowledge of hardy fuchsias than I possess :-) Unfortunately, my experience with these great plants is limited to the ones I grow personally and to those I bring in to sell at the nursery and they tend to be the relatively more common forms and those that exhibit reliable hardiness in our climate. It is interesting to see the hardiness values attributed to these plants by various fuchsia sites. I think we in the PNW enjoy a pretty benign climate rather well suited to growing a lot of hardy fuchsias but not all will make it with the same degree of vigor. Interestingly, both Double Otto and Lord Byron are listed by most sources as half hardy (whatever that means) but I know folks that have grown DO with ease. My feeling is that if you admire the plant regardless of listed hardiness, grow it, but until you are sure of its establishment and reliablity, it may be prudent to provide winter protection. The loss will not break the bank and you could very well be rewarded with a tough, great performing addition to your garden.

Hi flora2,

Remember me from the Bellevue (Overlake) Blueberry Farm trade last spring? A chilly, wet day but under the shelter with something hot to drink...we all enjoyed our small get-together.

Please save May 21 if you can, to attend the LeeAnna Darby Memorial Plant Sale in North Seattle. More info will be coming out soon, but LeeAnna was a much-loved GardenWeb member who passed away very unexpectedly, leaving behind her family, including an infant daughter, Madeline Rose. A trust fund has been set up and the proceeds of the plant sale will go to that account at Washington Mutual Bank.

The benefit plant sale has been organized by several of us GardenWebbers and we'd welcome plant donations for the sale and of course want to spread the word to get people to come and shop!

Anyway, as I said, more about that will be offered later. Both the benefit plant sale and a Seattle plant swap are already set for May 21, so I hope you can pick a different day for yours.

Sure Patrick: I do not think I ever met LeeAnna but Judith was very kind and sent me the info on her passing away. It sounds like a lot of people were very fond of her. We will choose a different date. I am waiting a little to see how many people show interest and then set on a date. Hope to see you there.

"Official" word on the benefit plant sale will be forthcoming soon, but the date is May 21 and it looks like the hours will be 10AM to 1PM.

Keep an eye peeled here for word from Flora on the Eastside trade.

Yes, the blueberry farm has always worked for us. It is free, it has a covered area (in case we get a day like today)and it is easily accesible. I will get you directions later. I am getting really excited now. Thanks,Flor de Maria

OK. Let's set the date. How about Sat, June 4 at about 11.00am? What do you think? This will give us a couple of weeks (or so) to gather plants and get organized. Please let me know if this date works for you. At the blueberry farm, of course. If we set on this date I will set directions soon. Thanks. Looking forward to this.
