Xanthocyparis nootkatensis & water tolerance

I recently planted two lovely Xanthocyparis nootkatensis 'Glauca'. I know they like it moist, but how much water is really too much? I'm concerned I might damage the roots, because I believe I did that to some of my firs and spruces, and it's quite hot and dry weather right now, which I know they kinda dislike, so I figure it's even more important with proper watering. One plant has some slightly whitened needles at the top, could this be a sign of overwatering, or dry air maybe? Anyone with experience on this matter?
