The 'Green Arrow' isn't a sisterplant of the 'Sparkling Arrow', it's the motherplant. 'Sparkling Arrow' was found as a white variegated branchmutation by Talon Buchholz'. I saw the partly variegated motherplant when I visited his nursery in 2004 together with other members of the Dutch Conifer Society. The habit of 'Sparkling Arrow' is the same as 'Green Arrow' only it's growing rathe is slower because of it's variegation. Other white variegated weeping forms of this species are 'Pendula Variegata' and 'Gloria Polonica'. The last one is very simular to 'Sparkling Arrow' but comes from Poland and it's variegation is a bit more creamy white. Chamaecyparis nootkatensis is now known as Xanthocyparis nootkatensis and by some as Cupressus nootkatensis.

cannot speak to heat tolerant conifers sad to say but i thought i would speak up for the surprising adaptability of Mexican conifers (Mexican oaks as well) to seemingly very different climates and localities. i have had gratifying success growing a number of species (likely mostly from areas with a summer rainfall maximum) here in the summer cool and dry (winter very wet) pacific north west (oregon coast)---including pinus montizumae, p. patula, p. pseudostrobus, p. estevezii,, cupressus montana, c. guadalupensis, and podocarpus matudae---.wonderful trees that once established seem to do well with little or no additional care.

I really would like to have a slender nootka cypress. As I wrote I have a 20 ft well growing C.n.'Pendula' in partial shade. Van den Akker is only a ghost of itself it was last June when I got it, got a little yellow again in May in full sun, so I potted it up, put it in shade and possibly is turning around. bboy, none of the root balls contained clay, was humously sand. I did put the 'van den Akker' into a pale of water, teased the root ball, lost a few roots, then added new soil and put it in a large pot in shade. There it will stay for two months, perhaps I have then a shady spot, or put it back in full sun when the heat is over. bboy, the root ball of the 'Strict Weeping' I did not tease loose, did not dare. But scoring the outside with 3 or 4 vertical shallow slits I usually do and was always successful. ademink, the 'Strict Weeping' does not seem to drop more foliage, perhaps also will stop yellowing, I hope, it is disheartening. 'Sunset Western Garden Book' cites Nootka Cypress as zones 4-6, 15-17 - which in itself is it's own 'zonal rating system' for the western US. As bboy has said previously regarding their zonal system - He said to the persuasion that (he) wouldn't put all the trust in the world on these editors. Of course at the very least you could find out what Sunset Zone is and to go from there. Heck maybe even contacting Sunset themselves could be an option for you.
