Wow, that is a great plan. I love the oriental lilies, and it was your pics, that got me to plant more. They fit in so well with the daylilies. The Glamini are a good idea too, as the typical glads, are just too tall, unless you use them for a cutting garden. I have planted the tall ones,and every year I have some that return. I know what you mean about wanting continuous bloom in the garden.

I only stuck those two daylilies in the corner there last year because they were leftover after the moving of the daylilies in the relocation gardens outfront that had to move because of the belgium block mini terraces. Even as I was putting them in the corner last year I was thinking that I really didn't want daylilies right there, I would rather have lilies. But since I didn't have lilies to plant right then but did need to do something with the two clumps of daylilies, I just stuck them there.

I had a big stand of those oriental lilies out front there for afew years and they really looked so good there in back of the daylilies. Sometimes the flowers would just sort of mix together, I have old pictures like that.

Sounds great. I think I have some of the glamini glads, if they made it through this winter. They are really nifty looking, I was thinking of putting in some more if I come across them locally.

Well, they come thru the winter here so I expect that the Glads would come back for you also. Not that glads are supoposed to come back here with our winters if you don't lift them but most of mine do. I plant them somewhat deeper than they say. I think its 3 inches they recommend for the Glamini glads but I put mine deeper so they come back. Plus they tend not to flop if they are not planted as shallow. They are a really great source of stunning summer color.

Ah yes, it has to be spring...Rita is moving things. I am going to get a few of those Silk Road Lilies and maybe a couple of others.

Your lilies are what inspired me to plant some. I had a few, but very few before you started posting pics.

Hey, it is spring and I only moved 5 shrubs and an entire row of daylilies so far. Not like I do some years when I go just crazy moving things LOL! I have some hostas and ferns to move after they come up (still not showing new growth) and then of course some other daylilies to move. I have been moving some of my daylilies around each spring as long as I have had daylilies.

I just need a stand of a nice mix of the common oriental lilies out there in front again. Just can't not have them because I liked them too much to do without. I do love the various lily blooms in the summer and there are so many lovely types. In fact some of my lilies are sticking their noses out of the ground now already this spring.

Uh huh, and it is very early yet too. Moving is part of gardening, that's my story.

Lily are a requirement for a nice cottage garden. I agree totally.

I am not going to be doing the moving projects like I have been doing in the past. That's my story and I am stickin to it. Seriously, I don't have as much that needs moving this spring and I am very glad. Just as I am very glad that I did not order daylilies for spring and do not have to create more gardenbeds this spring as I have been doing for years around here. Actually, I have no more room to do so even if I had wanted to.

I actually would like to get rid of afew daylilies. You all know I love my daylilies but I don't want this place to be a daylily garden. I want it to be a garden. I think of it very much as a cottage garden. Just that the daylilies took over in the years of daylily crazies. Last year I realised that I needed to bring back afew of the types of plants I used to have before the garden redos. And really it is only afew daylilies here and there to give me a more balanced garden.

An example of this is actually what I did late last summer when I moved daylilies out of that area under the front yard honeysuckle trellis so that I could put the spring bulbs in the fall. I intend to overplant that area with zinnias. I had zinnias on the other side and intend to overplant the spring bulbs in zinnias there too for summer color. There are and always will be plenty of daylilies around there. My daylilies will never go away.

40 lily bulbs is actually not much for me. I love to plant in larger groupings but just don't have the room.

I put out a bunch of new lilies last year, found several tango asiatic lilies that I really like. I'm not seeing growth on Tango 4 You, but everything else is up & going. That one didn't look too great last year, got them as a potted plant & I think they were probably overwatered before I got them. Lost my citronella lilies too, I think, unless they are being very late. They faded rather fast last year too, I think ground mice or moles got those. No interesting lilies in our local nurseries, I may have to order some. I think fall planted lilies do best for me, but I just can't wait.

There you go again, mentioning something and of course I have to go check it out and see if I have to have it. lol! I looked up the glaminis and yep, had to have a few. So I almost ordered some and then slammed my computer shut so I wouldn't and went to bed. Then I go in Pike Nursery and they had a mixed bag of them with the colors I love so I got three bags. YES! I think each bag had 25 so if they do great this year I will have to add more now won't I!! Judy

Rita, how deep do you plant your glads? I want to put them in a bed of DL but I do not want to dig up every year. I want to see if it would work for me. How tall do they get because my DL are tall?

Nancy- I don't know what happens to bulbs that simply dissapear. I have some Daffodils that are missing. Maybe Squirrels dig them up?

Judy- Great find. You will love the Glamini Glads, they are just marvelous.

valtorresz- I know I used to plant my common glads at least six inches so I must have planted the Glaminis 4-5 inches deep. The corms on the Glamini are much smaller than the corms on standard size glads. I am trying to remember the planting instructions but I think they say 3 inches. I could be wrong about that but 4-5 inches is good.

I parted with a few daylilies (I hear the collective GASP!) last spring/summer. I'm going to narrow it down to the ones that I really MUST have (right now I'm gardening in a 4000 sq lot and that includes the house). Between them and the iris, I'll consistently be dividing something! LOL Plus I want a blended garden. I want to go from spring bulbs to fall mums and such to enjoy the whole gardening season. I did add creeping phlox last year though they aren't looking to hot yet, perennial Salvia, 3 columbines (which are happily returning), a scabisoa, and 2 rudebeckia varities. oh and a low growing sedum too.

They also (the tall ones) take up more room. I know that seems odd as Gladiolas are tall and skinny. But still the shorter ones just take up less room. I always buy the mix and the colors are just glowing.

I planted one bag today and a few of the bulbs were kinda soft so I hope they will be ok. Pike Nursery is a very nice nursery and I know they can't help the bulbs going soft and they will return my money but I am going to keep them all and hope most of them come up. I should have felt of them before buying but I was so excited to see them that I grabbed what was left and checked out with a big dopey grin! lol!!!

Has anyone purchased the bulbs at home depot? I usually dont do bulbs but was wondering how were they. I want to try planting some glads behind a row of dl.

I've bought from HD & other box stores. I've had no problems. The bulbs may be bigger at better sources, but these bloom fine. One of those is where I got my glamini. They had more available and I only got 2 colors. After I saw them I was wishing I had bought every kind. Actually, I say glamini, they may have been something else, but they are short & seem to be brighter colors.

daylilyluver- I parted with afew daylilies myself last year in order to add some other perennials. I too want my garden to lok like a garden, not just a daylily garden. But not to worry, I have plenty of daylilies left that are not going anywhere.

Judy- I would be worried about the squishy glads. They are supposed to be dry and hard when you plant them. You could still order some at K. Van Bourgondien. I am sure you would love them.

I used to buy my Gladiolas locally including at Home Depot if I saw them. They were smaller than the mail order ones but they grew and bloomed just fine.

Here is the corner that needs the two daylilies moved to plant the lily bulbs. It's that green there to the left directly were the bottom of the belgium block mini terraces meets the round rose planter.

I got a notice from KVB that they shipped my order on Friday. Faster than I expected them to get around to it. Lillies really can be planted most anytime so I will move those daylilies and get those lillies planted as soon as I am able. Still early for planting Gladiolas here.

Rita: What has been your past experience with Van Bourgondien?
I ordered bulbs from them and am still waiting for them to come (I'm in no hurry as it is still too wet to plant). I ask because I was reading some reviews today on Watchdog and they seem to get alot of negatives.

They mess things up sometimes. As in the wrong varieties. I always get whatever I ordered. At least its marked correctly. But when they bloom, sometimes its the wrong color. One year I ordered these gorgous bulbs that were all sorts of color patterns that were supposed to grow really tall. The bulbs themselves looked great. But there were not supposed to be any solid white in the mix. When they bloomed they were all a big white open form scented flower. Lovely really, but not what I wanted. I dug them up and kept afew bunches that I planted around the garden and gave the rest away. I still don't know what they are but they bloom every year for me.

Plus some people have said they get really poor bulbs as in soft or rotting. I have bought literally hundreds and hundreds of bulbs from VB and never had bad bulbs. I have discoved other places that sell fancy lilies so don't buy as much from VB as I used to but I still do buy from them.

By the way, the lily bulbs (and gladiolas) I ordered did come today and the bulbs are fine and I already planted them.

Thanks for the info. I'll see how they work out. I saw your post about the glaminis and they are stunning. I'd have to pot them here and then store them for winter.

Still searching for online vendors as the big box stores just don't last more than 1 season here. I know about Van Englen but if you know of other reliable ones, let me know.

I mail order my spring bulbs like daffs and tulips from Scheepers and Brent and Beckies. I would recommend dropping Van Engelen and switch to Scheepers.
