Mendocino Botanical Garden a Must See!!!

Hello Patricia from Ottawa Canada!

I'm so happy to see your post and that you mention our wonderful Botanical Gardens--it's between the towns of Fort Bragg and Mendocino on our beautiful norcoast---did you get to do any whale watching??

I hope you can come and visit again. Maybe by that time I'll have a MENDO Daylily garden you can visit also---I'm sure working on it--

Hey miss cole... been wondering which rock you were under... I swear that sometime this coming year I am commin' to see you. Ok, well maybe Mendocino, but when I do, we will definately have to get together for at least a daylily walk and coffee!! Thankfully I got to get a beach fix at malibu last month, but it is not NEARLY as good as mendo... I miss it much. How's the DL farm doing? :o) heheheheh

Ahhhhhh! Mendocino! Lucky, lucky you, Cole. Cole, we stayed in Philo and LOVED it there. We were thinking very seriously of moving to the Anderson Valley. Who knows? We might still do it one of these days.

davidrt28, you're welcome! I hope someday you can visit the Botanical Gardens personally. It's really beautiful country and driving through Rt 128 where you see the old stumps of redwood logging is delightful (if a trifle hair-raising on some of those hairpin curves!). Your comment about their having some commercially extinct cultivars is interesting. I know that when we toured Filoli in Woodside, CA, we were told that they had some very rare specimens that had been brought to the US for planting in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. Apparently the head gardener at Filoli was great friends with the head gardener at GGPark and **wink wink** some trees and shrubs "fell off the trucks" and rolled the 32 miles into the Filoli gardens! I believe at least one of the tree species is extinct in the wild now, but I don't recall which one it was (it's been a long time since that first tour).

Thanks for the tip. I've seen the San Francisco and Berkeley Botanical Gardens, alas, I couldn't easily fit a trip to Mendocino in but will get there next time. I've heard that it's really nice. Slightly OT but their cultivar list of rhododendrons showed a few varieties that haven't been in US commerce for many years, like 'Radium'. I wonder if they have similarly rare cultivars of conifers. Lakes Park is very nice. Echo has a wonderful edible learning gardens. Edison Ford Estates is lovely and very interesting. Naples zoo has a nice garden. If you don't mind a drive Marie Selby in Sarasota is a must. If you want to head out to Sanibel I will give you a tour of the gardens at RS Walsh In the Garden. It is on the smaller side but we have butterfly, rare palm, asain, and moon gardens. Sanibel also has JN Ding Darling and Sanibel Captiva conservations society.

I'm sure you are going to see the "music garden." I saw and heard it last year. The amazing thing is that I had a camera that also did movies. You could not believe the beauty of the grasses moving in the wind with the sound of boat horns in the background (well, one time there was a police siren). I went there with the Perennial Plant Association. Some of my friends rented the headphones, but I opted to just experience the garden. I absolutely love this garden, with the movement and sound of grasses, the butterflies on the butterfly bushes, the alliums dried above the black eyed susans and russian sage. This garden had the movement and sound to be called a music garden. If you email me, I may be able to send you some of my digital movies from the music garden. I also enjoyed the botanical gardens of the Niagra area. Fortunately I was able to visit some private gardens as well. What a rich area of horticulture. I also visited Humboldt's Nurseries with their wonderful butterfly house.

Hi all!

Hey Fairysoapgirl --the dl ranching is doing great--my winter and spring orders are arriving! WOW, did I go nuts on that auction or what!!!
Been clearing some large trees and brush, I made more room for beds--It will be great when done---Glad you got the Malibu fix--I have family that live by Zuma Beach--what a place!!!

Hi lynxe, Philo is a very special place--have you been to Galala??
Anderson Valley is grand--great wines too!

Now let's hope these daylilys love mendo too---they are sure acting like it!

Funny... clearing beds... ah hem... sounds familiar. I moved (got rid of...) a bunch of maidengrass that was taking up one side of a large bed. Who need 5 of those when like 20 daylilies will fit there?? :o)

I'll start with 2008 collection Annette and John Rices---
OH FSG, They are wonderful--I was gone for 3 weeks plus, drove to Chicago, Ind,Ky for Dog shows--while I was in KY I made my first DLs growers visit with Annette and John--I stayed by lexington and they picked me up and gave me a tour on the way to their farm! It rained the whole time but WHAT a treat!
They have a wonderful setup ---GREAT greenhouse, you could have eaten off the floor. The Plants were BEAUTIFUL---Got to see the birthplace of the GREAT BASS GIBBSON--and RUCKUS. all kidding aside the Rices are super folks and have created some wonderful cultivars. They will be having a open house along with David and Mort of Daylily World the weekend of June 28-
This should be a real Dl gala!

Oh Cole... it sounds like you are having a grand time... I am glad you got to have a DL garden experience... still working on mine! Maybe I might make it out to Jack Carpenter's place this summer.

Looks like Clowns Cabaret is the only thing that overlaps in our collections... hehehe... not that I don't have on the "to buy" list:

I got nice stock from Goldcoast too. Funny, they live right near where I used to in California - PRE daylily addiction. What do they say about hindsight...?

I have a bunch of seedlings going in the laundry room... some of them are from Forestlake Ragamuffin... so we'll see how they turn out.

Sounds like you must have a LOT of room up there... how's the housing market with the mill closing... everybody was really worried last time I was up there. If you keep buying daylilies, there will be no place for Cole on the farm! ;o)~

What's funny is, I told the BF that when we move, all the daylilies are coming with us... he stared at me bug eyed. I know he thinks I am nuts, but I wasn't kidding! It will be an exclusionary item on the sale!
