Question About Sprouting Daylily Seeds

I found some refrigerated seeds from 2010 and put them in the hydrogen peroxide soaking solution 2-20-12. They are all a similiar cross - havent had any luck with them germinating. Other seeds from 2010 have taken a little time but have germinated and are now potted and doing well. I have changed the water periodically and discarded the seeds that were soft. Am I wasting my time with these seeds or should I continue to soak them? Should I put them back in the frige for a couple of weeks? Thanks for any advice!

if they've been soaking for over a month, i'd say pitch them, they most likely won't germinate at this point.

It is up to you but I'd dump them too.

The white seedlings have a genetic defect and do not contain cholorophil. Without that, they cannot process sunlight and without that ability, they cannot live. As soon as the nutrition in the seed is used up, they will wither and die. Sorry! Always a disappointment when something like that happens. Maryko, Winter Sowing is done outdoors, so there are no lights. I WS'd 50 cups of crosses (16 oz. cups with 2-3 seeds in each). I put them outside in the freezing cold in January and for most of two months they were completely covered with ice and snow. We have had only a couple of days above 50 deg. and the last two nights were well below freezing. Still, I am getting a few daylily sprouts as of today. With the coming week, we should be having weather more spring-like and I hope they will all come to life. I also WS's 75 plastic milk jugs with other perennials and even with the cold temps, 15 of those jugs are full of sprouts. This is my first attempt at WS and it is very rewarding ---- simple as nature intended and no worry or hardening off! Check out the Winter Sowing forum.

Daylily seeds sprouting in pod. What to do?

lisa_3: I had the same issue come up last year with Substantial Evidence (this year was too crazy hot during bloom season for it to set seed)--about 1/2 of the seeds had germinated in the pod. I planted the sprouted seeds immediately and they proved to be viable and grew all winter long before being planted this past spring. The remaining, ungerminated seed got thrown into a baggie with plain water (no H2O2) in the fridge for three weeks and then planted, still ungerminated. Most of those also sprouted and grew. I'm thinking the pod germinating is just another quirky thing about Substantial Evidence and its offspring, although I haven't yet grown out seed from any other members in the line off of my own plants. I have bought seeds out of Pigment of the Imagination, but those behaved like any other seeds--come to think of it, the pod parent was a Faulkner seedling rather than POTI.

Thanks to you both; I was just about to ask the same question. I haven't tossed the seeds into pots yet. Should I wait until spring? Should the seeds go live in the vegetable drawer of the refrigerator?

Based upon your question/comments, you do have interest in these seeds .... Why not experiment with them rather than just tossing them ... put them into the freezer for a day or two then thaw them out and perhaps repeat - extreme representation of 'winter' and of attempting to activate the chemistry within the seeds that controls germination protocols. Some seeds(NOT daylilies) need extreme heat and some actual freezing to facilitate germination. Germination ease or difficulty is a genetic phenomenon it seems. There is little to lose with the experiment IF you wish to save the potential within those seeds.

I hope you put them in a warm, dark closet. They must have absolute dark to germinate. Some just won't germinate, though, in spite of it all.
