HAVE: ge-type swap in Portland

I will be hosting a green-elephant type swap in Portland. It will be April 7 in the parking lot of Sellwood Park, starting around NOON. It is a large parking lot next to ball fields and a bathroom. There is a playground nearby also.

Freebies/trades. No sales.

Participants in the WA ge swap suggest the following set up:

create separate areas outside your vehicle for 1) up for grabs; and 2) holding for pick-up/prearranged trades. It would be nice to label these areas with signage. Keep your own plants inside your car to prevent confusion.

Can attendees try to post a list of what you are bringing, or an Exchange List in your Member Section, so we can pre-arrange Trades?

Please see my list and ask for stuff. I generally bring at least 6 types of plants, but requests are welcome - and that is a good way to get what you really hope for. A Personal garden visit is good anytime!

Leftover items from Angela's Swap (and others) could be give away on Earth Day, April 21. I have shady storage space if needed, and I live near Woodlawn Park were the 2007 Earth Day event will be held.

Add to your usual GW list of Portland-area Spring Swaps this one, combined with the Friends of Portland Community Gardens, to beef-up their annual Plant and Seed Give-Away, on Saturday, April 21. This happens at the Annual EARTH DAY Celebration - which this year is appropriately to be called: Planting the Seeds of Community -

so GardenWebbers!! Please attend, invite your Garden Clubs, and help give that meaning...

Earth Day 2007 will be held in NE Portland at Woodlawn Park, near the Woodlawn Elementary School and Community Garden, just north of 11th & NE Dekum. Lots will be going on,including music, and a great Kids Play area. Over 100 organizations participated last year!

# 75, 8 bus, & # 6 are close. All connect to MAX.

Anywhere from 1,000 to 5,000 people, including many new, young homeowners, may attend...so begin your Winter Sowing now, to pot-on in April, and also think what you'd like to divide - as WE NEED PLANTS! Want ot clear out that seed bin? Small, labelled packets will be wonderful...as there will be many grateful takers, who will reciprocate in coming years. This is a pay-it-forward culture.

It's best to come to Earth Day in the morning, as crowds may be large after noon. Whatever is there could go fast. OK to drop off stuff, then park by my house if you like, on NE 9th Ave.

Ever since I found this forum (not too long ago) everyday I discover what a newbie I am! All these names...never heard of them :) I would love some bok choy and 1-2 tomato plant, don't know nothing about the 23 names, so any of them that you have extra at the time. I saw another post about GE kind of event south of Issaquah, may be I can pick them there?

I was going to suggest the same thing, myself. I know I didn't connect with a few people becasue I couldn't find them. I brought you a delphinium to trade for a dahlia tuber, but never saw you. This may be something that the veterans of the trades will think is trivial, but one problem I always run in to at these things is that it's difficult to tell what people brought versus what they acquired, and what is up for grabs. I see something interesting at someone's station, only to find out they just got it, or it's already promised. Some people are very protective of their new trades, and go on the defensive when you approach them, but sometimes it isn't clear whether the plants are pre-promised, up for grabs, or new acquisitions. Some people trade from their trunks or the backs of their trucks, but I find that confusing, and I usually won't peek inside their vehicle because, to be safe, I assume that if it's in the car, it's either been traded, or is promised. It can be confusing. So I thought that if everyone sort of followed the same system, things would be a little less confusing. For the green elephant, the way I worked my set-up is, I pulled everything out of the SUV when I got there. I set all the pre-promised things off to the side of my SUV, and put the 'up for grabs' stuff at the back of the parking stall behind the SUV, where passers-by could plainly see them. Then, when I acquired plants, I put them in the SUV. The bonus is that I knew exactly how much room was left in the SUV after each trade. I try to do this when the trade is in people's back yards, too, and make several trips to load the SUV throughout the trade, so I don't acquire more than I have room to transport.

Thanks, dj! Small pots, mobility, yeah that was part of the reason. Also didn't have the space when I started, and I learned a valuable lesson about hot heads and cool feet--much like Clematis vines. And it's definitely not a competition. Always learning, experimenting and applying! I certainly learned that my NuMex Twilight grown in a slightly larger pot was at least 50% bigger than its sibiling, so I don't think you can overpot these plants. Gary, the real Peruvian Serlano is mild pepper and has a cherry/tomatoey flavor. Mine weren't the juiciest, and since it's my first year, I'm not sure if that's typical. The plant spent a lot of the season with curled up leaves, so it wasn't happy about something. The hot Peruvian Serlanos are probably between a Jalapeno and a Chiltepin for heat. Good flavor with some heat. I think the rules of the seed swap dictate no "John's Face Melter"-type hybrids, but I'll be happy to send you some seeds via PM. That plant is quite prolific and still has ripening peppers, even though it's started to cool off here in the PNW. --Byron.

I'm thinking of coming, though it is a little far. Travis, I'm interested in your Salix integra 'Hakuro Nishiki' (Dappled Willow). Do you have a list of what you are looking for? I have some houseplants- Ledebouria socialis. cuttings for Hoya carnosa, succulent that is pale greenish blue in rosettes, grows into a long hanging vine. I also have some perennials I could divide.
