Help ID-ing tree, please?

Driving me slightly nuts... un-labeled tree in Swan Pt. Cemetery, Providence, RI (at the corner of Forest Ave & SOuth Ave, incidentally- work during the week & haven't had time to try & call someone there...) I think it's the same as a conifer in a friend's yard, also not able to ID. The one at swan pt. is approx 20 feet tall. The two in friend's yard are smaller, with Photos posted here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/elfprints/sets/72157624192366681/

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I've spent all morning on Arbor Day & Nearctica, etcetera!!

Japanese Cedar, Cryptomeria japonica.

Umm. That can get to be a *huge* tree. If you want to keep it, better move it. But also know that it's a poor choice for windy sites. It's weak-wooded and tends to break. It's a tad young to bloom. Beyond that, when it does set buds, they're on the tree during the winter and can freeze before they bloom. I don't know what it is, but i cut one down on my property. It grew from seed and within two years, it was about 25 feet tall! I have seen them planted in parking lots here and also growing wild (not sure if native or introduced) in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada (Millerton Lake to be more specific).

Excellent firewood, comparable to White oak or Hickory. Splitting is easy, if you're not trying to split a crotch. I do it every year with an axe, a maul and wedges. If the trunk is clear, maybe you could get some lumber for small projects - quartersawn is best.

Cardamine bulbosa, or similar. But that's just a guess. It really needs a shot of the leaves to lock down the ID.

Sugi Cryptomeria japonica

For clarification, not a cedar Cedrus as stated above.

Don't be, this and many other trees are often called cedars.

Okay thanks! I know in Japan they call them Sugi, but I wasn't sure if we called them the same.

The name cedar is properly restricted to Cedrus
