Bleeding Heart Question

Bamateacha

For three years I've planted a bleeding heart. It goes dormant like I expect when the hot, hot heat arrives. But not one has ever come back for me. Is it my zone? Is it just too early for last year's to be breaking ground yet? Do critters like to eat them under the ground? I'm bumfuzzled! Autumn fern, bottlebrush buckeye, native azaleas, and a few other plants thrive near its location. I'm really frustrated!
