How to save seeds
Comments (8)bamboo_rabbit, Howdy Neighbor, I'm just north of the Hernando/Citrus County line east of Hwy41 on one of those many many little farm/ranches. I'm on ten acres here and slowly pushing the jungle back and planting my orchard. When I tried planting a garden out in the open I just ended up feeding the myriads of Florida bugs. So I built my 50 foot long by 40 foot wide, 15 foot high screened garden area. Being retired I did the work myself with my Grandpa's old cast iron hand-me-down cement mixer which will serve another three generations after me. It has saved me plenty $$ and took me over a two year period of time to complete. I now enjoy bug free gardening. I have chickens which supplies me with eggs & meat for the table and poop for my composting. My next project to start this fall is building another greenhouse for my tropical trees. Comments (6)Not sure how they used to do it but I save seeds for two different types of beets and I alternate the years I save their seed to prevent them from crossing. So one year I'll save the seeds for 'Early Wonder' and the next year I'll save the seeds for 'Golden'. The same thing can be done with beets and chard, for carrots (although Queen Anne's Lace will cross with carrots), or for other things that might cross like the various brassicas. Seed saving doesn't have to be an every year thing as long as enough seed is collected to plant for two or three years (or more). Rodney...See MoreBauhinia seeds- when and how to pick to save?
Comments (4)Give them to people who might want a beautiful tree. I live in Perth, Western Australia and a long time ago, I worked in an area that had a home with a white Bauhinia tree. I wanted one of these because they are beautiful but the most common variety where I live are the purple and pink ones. I asked the owner of the home if I could take a few of the tiny saplings that were growing in the garden and she let me take some. I brought them home and through many moves I now have 1 mature tree that is stunning and about 5-6 metres tall after being in my home now for 15.5 years. The tree produces seed pods. Since it is impractical to keep a lot of trees, perhaps you can give them to people who might want an ornamental tree, or offer them to garden centres who may be able to use them. Alternatively, set yourself up in the centre of town and sell them for $10 per tree....See MoreHow do you remove seeds from homemade Blackberry Jam?
Comments (24)mabel, that looks like my old Squeezo, except mine is all metal and has several different sized sieve/cones. Not even the smallest one gets out all the seeds, a few small ones always slip through, but not very many. It's not as "reliable" at removing all the seeds as a fine sieve is, but not as much work either. Well, except cleaning the darned machine afterward. gourmet, if you push the berries through a sieve or a chinois, or a china cap or a food mill or any of the above, you'll get the berry pulp as well as the juice. As the berries get mashed up, the seeds will remain but the pulp will go through the openings of the sieve/utensil. Annie...See Moreksrogers
