Just needed some instant color already.

Crocus are in full bloom here and daffoldils have just started. Daffs bloom here anywhere starting from Mid March for an early year to mid april for a very late one. But its not enough color for me!

I just couldn't stand it anymore and bought the most pretty orange violas today at the nursery. Just had to have to spring color already. Bought some potted in bloom ranunculus also in the most lovely and vibrant colors. I do love the flowers on ranunculus but if I want them I have to buy potted ones in bloom like I just got today. I can never get anywhere by planting the bublets myself and tring to get them to grow.

I know what you mean! Too cold here to plant much, but I couldn't resist some white and lavender alyssum this weekend. It smells like summer :)

Sounds lovely! I've been tempted, but since I can work the soil, I caved in and bought a few perennials (no blooms yet) and succulents for containers.

LOL...with grandparents born in Italy I thought "my people" were the only ones who did the thing with a little St. Joseph statue! Had an Italian college roommate who also put a little statue of Mary in the window before bed in hopes of holding off rain for the next day. Mary had to be facing the big outdoors, mind you. What a hoot and blast from the past...my aunt buried a statue of St. Joseph in the little patch of grass out in front of her townhouse when trying to sell it. By the way, your house is beautiful. I love the color combo of walls and shutters. You can get a little statue in any "religious store" and there are plenty of online sources for them. This "explanation" on Snopes web site offers a humorous explanation of tradition. Had no idea realtors were getting in on the practice! Best of luck in selling your house. Today, it was lovely today. I was working out in the garden multching, some watering and I also sprayed everything for thrips again. It was only 90 and felt cool compaired to the heatwave. As soon as I woke up this morning I turned off the AC in my bedroom and opened the bedroom window again. I went in there and I have a small fan blowing and it feels great for sleeping later. I am thinking that with all this early warm spring and heatwave if we could only get a good strong soaking rain or two and not have frying hot weather there should be lots of rebloom. Or so I hope. I should have sprayed again for thrips before this as the first treatment really did helps lots but didn't do it all. But I had some other garden projects and then the exteme heat hit. I couldn't go outside in the sun. So today I sprayed but lots of done scapes already so it should have been before. Well, I figgure maybe at least I will wipe those nasty thrips out and be ahead of the game. Beside all the late bloomers are just about to start and belive me, I sprayed them too. I sprayed all the daylilies. All of them.

Going through the same thing, but with BOTH "parents". My step-mom had a stroke and my dad cannot care for himself at all. She was the caretaker - yeah, right; her stroke happened about 10 days before anyone realized it. No one could recognize it and she just kept trying to do what she knew best. It was so sad - the house was in shambles when I got there! Unfortunately, they are half a country away from any family that can help - I'm on the east coast and my step-brother is in CA. They are in MI. Since there was no one to take care of Dad when they took my step-monm to the hospital, the hospital kept him as well. Of course that was 3 days of self-pay!! After that, my Dad had a seizure - major, and cut his head and face pretty badly when he fell. I guess that was a good thing because that allowed both of them to be placed in a skilled care facilty. I can't tell you the nightmare with that though - they were placed in the wrong type of facility at first which was an awful experience. They were expected to take care of themselves, and of course, couldn't. What a mess. This country has to do better with health care! When they finally realized that they needed extra care, they couldn't take my dad because they didn't have any male beds. The law says the facility has to have a certain number of beds for females and and a certain number for males - who the heck made up that mess!! Anyway, the best thing is to NOW try to get on a waiting list. In my "parents" case, they live in a small town and were able to get in right away, especially coming directly from a hospital. Where I am, there is a waiting list. Plus, you want to be sure that your Dad is getting the proper type of care. That may take some time too. Don't remember if you said, but be sure to get POA NOW while you can. I can't get it for my Dad - he is already diagnosed with dimentia. My step-mom has it for him. If something happens to her, like another stroke, then the state has to take over. Luckily she is still in her right mind after the stroke, and has passed her POW to her son. HOWEVER, she still has POA over my dad. The only way I can get it for my Dad is if my Step-brother gives it to me - that won't happen because he does't really want to give up Dad to me. Gotta work on that one pretty quickly. My best to you. If I find out anything else in my travels, I'll pass it on. gng

Most Phalaenopsis begin to grow new flowering spikes in late Autumn/early winter and the flowers start to open about 110 days later so there is a peak flowering in spring. The flowers should last 2 to 3 months in good conditions. Once the flowers start to die cut the flowering stem off at the base and with good growing conditions the annual cycle should repeat. The trigger for new flowering spikes is a slight temperature drop. Look at the leaves. They tell the story. Large leaves to gather available light...says somewhat dim light where they are growing in nature. Large thick leaves that store water....says the plant is not growing in a tropical mist forest. Phalaenopsis Temperature range about 60 to 90F What sort of Fertilizer are you using? I'm just about to water my small collection by taking them to the sink. They spend the year in this room because outside in zone 10b is a death zone. Too hot in summer. Too cold in winter. Extreme UV most of the year. Read the other Phalaenopsis threads and if still puzzled, ask more questions. Added via edit. Should have added under to "Look at the leaves." Flaccid leaves are a sign of root problems, perhaps overwatering or not good drainage.

The voilas I put in a pot last spring and left had a balsam branch fall on them, and amazingly when I pulled it off, there was lots of green leaves and one yellow flower. That shows you how mild our winter was. We normally don't get any colour in the garden till Easter, or just after. That is when I buy flats of pansies and violas for the pots and the window boxes. We had freezing rain here today!!

Raining here too but I just couldn't wait. I love lots of color in the garden and of course this time of year, thats not happening.

I plan to add tons more crocus next fall so that there would be splashes of more color next spring.

I will see how those violas do, if they work out well, I will find more places to add them next year.

Just came back home after running some errands. Bought two planted pansey bowls at Home Depot. Those are those bowl shaped pots with pansies or violas. Mine are violas, one is light yellow and creme ones and the other purple ones. They smell sweet. Bought a packet of sugar snap peas too will plant them later. Oh yeah, bought three of those boxed roses they sell this time of year too. Keep me out of those nurseries!

Oh, I know what you mean. I'm simply craving color...inside my home and out. I do have fading hyacinths and full-bloom red tulips on the back porch to cheer me up, but there is still too much brown and gray outside.

I've picked up a few plants this weekend. Some purple and white (each) wave petunias were the only things with blooms. It's just still too cold to get what I want.

In order to satisfy that crazy color craving I hit the quilt shop, glass shop (I do stained glass) and took a long walk through a botanic garden. Happy projects to come!

Pretty pics! I have to use color inside my house in the form of Spring/Easter vignettes, sometimes with silk flowers! I did use potted plants earlier but my cat likes them too much!

Still too early to do anything outdoors - we woke up to snow yesterday. It disappeared quickly but the nurseries aren't even open yet.

I'll have to get my color fix from all your pretty pics! TFS

Thank you for posting. This helps me to figure out if I'm really zone 7a. My gardener friend and I disagree: I say we're zone 7a, he says zone 6b. Our daffodils and hyacinth are blooming already and my foxglove, lobelia and daylillies have started, so I'm right. Nanny nanny boo boo, Brian.

Any true zone 7 plants have never made it thru our winter here. But some maps have us in zone 7, some zone 6. The zone 6 is a safer bet for me, you never know when anything bad winter will hit after times of very mild ones.
