I think your plant is known as Jamacian sorrel,Roselle or Hibiscus Sabdariffa.They do reseed moderately. I also grow them . They can get very tall ( I currently have one about 10 feet tall)I usually plant them at the back of my border close to a fence or building because of their height than can topple over in heavy rain or wind. They normally flower around October to January. The flowers are a beautiful burgundy color resembling a hibiscus flower.
