Edible ground cover - Strawberyy

I am currently looking at planting some ground cover around some shrubs. I am looking for something edible. I already have a vine/runner type strawberry growing in a half wine barrel that has done quite well, its going through a growth spout as I speak. (currently the beginning/mid of Autumn in Adelaide)

Were I plan to plant out more strawberries is in my front yard. The area wont get much direct sunlight in Winter, but will get consistent sun during the summer mornings. Will be in the shade during the summer afternoons. Adelaide summer can be hardcore, so a good thing.. Photo attached, will be planted along the fence, in front/between the shrubs. House faces East.

So my question is, will they go ok in this position and if so what variety should I go. I could propergate from the strawberries I already have, which is a variety that send out runners, but I also know of Alpine strawberries (Fragaria x vesca).

I use strawberries among my landscape plants for ground cover and they do not get a lot of sun. Last year was the second year and I I initially planted 8 plants, whci spread all over and we got about three gallons of fruit.

I use a combination of June bearing and everbearing strawberries in my yard. They make good groundcovers and spread well.

You may want to make a walking path or foot bridge to allow access to them in the rear of the beds.

"do I mulch to cover the ground between plants to retain moisture and replenish the soil gradually or, what I really want, plant beneficial (and hopefully edible) plants in the clear spots between by set plants that will spread out and cover the ground and create a natural ground cover. " You do both! Mulching is great, as well as interplanting, maximizing your yield for your space. It's really not difficult at all, any space you have open, stick a smaller growing plant in, if the plant is two big you wil have a jungle an look like a miss - For example, if you have tomatoes spacing 4' and you say oh well I got a foot or so in-between the tomatoes, I'll stick a pepper plant in.. Eventually the peppers plant will compete with the tomatoes and sprawl all over like a jungle.. Now if you plant carrots,beets, leafy greens inbetween the tomatoes, you will have a nice low growing edible goudcover that will never get tall and look like a miss.. It will look neat and clean.. You could do this with anything.. The eggplant in the right hand corner bed you could interplant smaller plants, the tomatoes as well, and even the peppers.. Now the cucumbers and zukes are going to sprawl all over and create a groundcover naturally, you don't have to interplant vines like that.. But the tomatoes,eggplant, and peppers, you could diffenently squeeze some low growing plants that will make a nice, neat looking edible groundcover..

One of the must-have wildflowers I always plant in my veggie patch is toadflax. Here's why: It blooms early, and then kind of grows gangly and is really easy to pull out. It attracts bumblebee's to the 10th power! While the few early-spring honeybees are busy pollinating fruit trees and shrub flowers, they sort of ignore your veg. garden. But if you plant some toadflax around it will guarentee plenty of bumbles to do the pollination until the honeys get around to it. Plus it's pretty while in bloom. I think it is actually the wild version of snapdragons. It has never become invasive in my neck of the woods, but then I do pull most of it up after all the blooming is done. Don't forget crimson clover...it doesn't take away nitrogen, it provides it....and it's pretty...and it attracts bees. I use several different wildflowers, but I've always experimented with small batches over 2 years before deeming them "safe" companions. This year I'm trying the herb borage. I've heard it can grow enormous and become a thug, but I'm going to try it a few plants. Personally, I would be very careful about using a wildflower mix. Some flowers can really, really become weeds, especially in a tended area...like your vegetable garden. Perhaps make one row a "flower row." If you observe a flower that you fall in love with, then use that one next year as your plant-it-here-and-there flower. Many people interplant with marigolds, zinnias, and calendulas for color and pest deterent....(I'm not so convinced that marigolds do that, but they sure are pretty.)

Thanks for suggestions. Have seeds and may plant butternut and or delicious squash. Had seen a mini-hubbard, but do not have seed. Already have beds of STBs. Cranberries cannot make it in this hot zone. I tried them in my blueberry patch in MD (same zone as here in KY)-the cranberries and lingonberries grew well, but never fruited. A fruit expert told me it was too hot...I coddle my crops but do not provide AC outdoors...

for me yes, when they are finished cropping leave the roots in the ground to rot away and we tuck the tops under the mulch. they are still nitrogen fixing as they produce. Here is a link that might be useful: lens garden page

the small wild strawberry, or alpines (slightly different but closely related to the wild types) will do much better under shade than normal big garden strawberry. strawberries are quite burly though and do ok in part shade

I use strawberries among my landscape plants for ground cover both in areas that do not get a lot of sun and sunny areas. This year was the second year for one of my beds that is planted in shredded limb much (with a bit of soil around the plant) where I grow fruit trees and bushes. Another bed is on the south side of my house and has been there about 5 years. Made a lot of berries last year. I initially planted 6 plants, whcich spread all over. Last year in the 5-year old bed we got about 4 gallons of fruit.

Thank you all for you advise.

As an update, the strawberries in my wine barrel have gone into growing over drive. Lots of new shoots, they have spread beyond the wine barrel, onto the ground and I would have at least 6 that have rooted in the ground that I could snip away and transplant.

Can I only transplant the ones that have rooted on the ground, or can I snip of the shoots that are just hanging over the side?

Please see the photo, in my ugg boots :-). Can I put this straight in the ground?

P.S. the wine barrel has a similar sun profile to my front yard, so I figure they will work well in both locations. But will buy some wild/alpine's to mix it up a bit.

I am in California - the hot part of the Bay Area- and my alpine strawberries are in the same condition you have here: they grow and fruit like mad under raspberries, hibiscus and gardenias, with AM sun only- 8 to noon approx.
Too many snails to try runner berries, besides, they have many great strawberry farms around here that do a much better job than I would :)
