What woukd you plant with rose shrubs?

(I'm also asking this question on the antique rose forum, but I'd love to hear from this group because you are all so very creative and colorful.)

What would you plant with rose shrubs?

I am getting 2 rose shrubs in April. They are supposed to be petty disease resistant. One is a pink rugosa called Therese Bugnet and can reach 5'ht 6'width & the other is yellow called Morning Has Broken which can reach 4'ht 4'width. But when I get them they will just be in 1 gallon containers.

I am planning to make a new full sun bed for them near (but not too near) the driveway so I can enjoy their look & fragrance all the time. They will be diagonally in front of a small dogwood.

I am wintersowing a bunch of perennials, and will be ws another bunch of annuals, so I have a lot of choice on what to plant around the new roses, I think. I also somehow ended up buying 4 pink peony tubers from Costco yesterday (how did that happen?) -- don't know if they're a good choice to go with the roses?

What would you plant as companions? Any ideas/suggestions/dire warnings?

How about some evergreens and a bush called Diablo Ninebark?

Maria, a classic combination with roses is lavender. There are so many types of lavender you can choose the one(s) you prefer. Also catmints, Russian sage, rosemary, lamb's ears, lady's mantle, santolina (grey leaved and green), daylilies, purple coneflowers, sedums and other small succulents, just to name a few. This year I'm experimenting with sowing nigella beneath one of my old tea roses (Monsieur Tillier). I'm also underplanting it with lemon thyme. I have hot pink kalanchoe growing on the side. The ensemble is backed by a vitex which in turn has a background of blue ceanothus. There are really many choices to grow with roses.

Personally, I would move those junipers and incorporate them into the border. They are going to eventually get way too wide and take up too much of your lawn. If you are trying to create an entryway feel into that area then consider an arbor with some bushes planted on either side of it that connect to the fence bed and a planting bed along the house respectively. I would create a curve to the bed line that is no narrower than 3 feet at the absolute smallest part but I would make it much wider at the ends (front bed incorporating that tree and in the back I would make a larger bed in the corner. Play with the garden hose and lay it on the grass to get some ideas. (think serpentine) I would plant a tree in the back corner, I think you have more room then you realize. Keep lower limbs trimmed up as your tree grows so you get a nice canopy but can still move under it. I think a redbud or flowering cherry/plum would all work size wise. I would also plant a small tree off the corner of the patio, but you didn't ask about that. What is the tree up front near the fence? I also agree with dibbit about not doing the hedge row of all the same. A mixed shrub border would be nice and could give you color all year. Depending on size I would do either 1 or 3 of each as I like odd numbers. If you do three I would do them in a triangle formation rather than a row plastered against the fence. Here are some suggestions-- Knock out roses, My favorite is still the original one. Forsythia (these get rather big so only do one unless you are getting a dwarf variety, and plant it where you can let it get about 10' wide as these look best when allowed to weep) In spring my huge ball of sunshine is a beacon of spring, but then it becomes a huge green bush the rest of the summer so plant some pretty perennials in front of it. (homestead purple verbena is nice) Wiegelia (there are variegated varieties as well as dark leaved choices all with beautiful blooms) Viburnum, This is a subject onto itself, research your favorite varieties on this forum some are evergreen, but most are not. The flowers vary greatly as do berries etc. Perhaps a Little Gem Magnolia in the back corner? Indian Hawthorne is an old stand by, it is ever green and can look nice, but will never get as tall as your fence. Why not plant something to grow on the fence or on a trellis against the fence such as a clematis or Amethyst Falls Wisteria, then plant some smaller evergreens in front of it such as Helleri Holly or the Indian Hawthorne? Japanese Cleyera is another evergreen possibility August Beauty Gardenias, or some of the smaller varieties such as 'radicans' would be nice in front of whatever tree you choose to plant. If part of the border will not get too much afternoon sun then I would definitely include some Hydrangeas, some repeat bloomers such as Endless Summer or Penny Mac would be show stoppers. And what southern order would be complete without some azaleas? Again avoid afternoon sun. There are so many choices but I would work on a bed line first and start preparing the site while you decide. Look up Lasagna gardening and start prepping the site with newspaper and soil amendments so you don't have to dig up all that sod. You can spray it with round up first if you want, but it is not necessary if you put down newspaper thick enough under your amendments. the amazing thing I find is that people are often afraid to plant to much as they think it will make their yard look smaller, but it will actually do the opposite, so unless you need a certain amount of grass to have enough room for the kids playing football or something, I would take out quite a bit of that lawn. Oakleaf hydrangea is a summer blooming shrub. This is a plant that blooms on new wood, so low winter temps (if not deathly to the entire plant) should have next to no effect on summer flowering on new shoots. Reveal the research that claims that there won't be flowers after cold damage to stems. Take the example of the Morton Arboretum (Lisle, IL), where winter lows fall into the -20s F regularly, and they have June/July flowers every summer with Hydrangea quercifolia. Check their website to see which clones they are having success with, and try them. Better, use the clones that Johnson's Nursery from the Milwaukee suburbs are selling. Those should provide ironclad performance for WI conditions. I'm always amazed when gardeners will reject plants that have some degree of performance in/near their zone, but just aren't real common and because they aren't seen around like forsythia or burning bush. On the other hand, they'll be the first to take the hothouse rose and fry it at first winter's chill simply because "no one else has it." Self-limiting is it's own reward...or sentence.

Traditionally clematis and roses are a wonderful combination. I would suggest one possible drawback, however, and that is if you are concerned with getting adequate airflow around the base of the plant that perhaps adding the density of the clematis there might contribute to the factors that allow disease to prosper. Last year was the first time I had trouble with rust on my Everest Double Fragrance, and when I was trying to assess the reason I realized it was probably because I had clustered some potted plants around the lower portions, thereby blocking the airflow. I think having the clematis growing up and through the rose is good, but maybe safer to plant it a bit away and wait for the vines to get long enough to reach over and through and have the flowers up away from the root area. Now, understand that I am only speculating here. I grow roses and I grow clems and mostly they are still quite mysterious in their needs, but....needing a free flow of air seems to be one of them. When to plant potted shrub roses

"I plant potted roses anytime I can work the soil, including now while the temps are so high. as long as you don't disturb the roots ball and water deeply and often until the roots are growing into the surrounding soil, they'll be fine. Soil falling from the root ball when it's removed from the pot will cause loss of tiny feeder roots. This loss prevents water from being taken up by the plant until these feeder roots can grow back. Meanwhile the top growth will wilt and any flower buds will be lost. I give this intruction sheet to all who buy roses from me. No one who's followed them has ever had a problem. Planting a potted rose When planting a potted rose bush, care must be taken so soil doesnt fall from the roots or tiny feeder roots will be lost causing the plant to be stressed. I overcome this problem by doing the following. First prepare the planting hole. Dig it twice as wide and deep as the pot. In the bottom portion of the hole mix horse manure or an organic fertilizer with the soil. With a sharp razor knife cut the bottom from the pot. Then cut down the two opposite sides of the pot about two inches. Using masking tape, rubber bands, or string secure the two cuts then continue cutting the sides to a point halfway down. Secure these the same as the top cuts were secured. Continue cutting the sides down all the way. They'll be held together buy the tape, etc. Holding the bottom, place the pot into the hole. If the bush is a grafted plant, position it so the bud union (swollen knob/graft point from where the canes grow) will be 4-6 inches below the soil surface in cold winter growing zones. Adjust the depth accordingly in warmer climates up to even with the soil surface. If the bush is on itÂs own roots, position it so itÂs no more than an inch deeper than in the pot. Slide the bottom from the pot. Pull soil into the hole until it come to the lower tape/rubber band/string. Cut the tape/rubber band/string on both sides of the pot and continue filling the hole to just under the top tape/rubber band/string. Cut the top tape/rubber band/string and fill the hole so just the tops of the two pot sides are above the soil. Pull them straight up and complete filling the hole. Do not tamp the soil. Settle it with a hose set to just a trickle so all the water stays on the soil around the bush. There should be a depression around the bush. Add more soil until most of the depression is filled. Until the bush is growing well, water daily soaking the area well. Planted this way, the bush will not know itÂs been transplanted and should show no signs of stress. When watering, make sure you apply enough so it gets to the roots. A light sprinkling only wets the surface. This can cause the feeder roots to grow towards the surface. In dry spells the bush will wilt. Watering deep eliminates this problem and causes the roots to grow deep enabling them to better withstand periods of no or little rainfall. A five gallon bucket with a 16D nail hole in the bottom side and filled with water, then placed next to the bush will supply the needed water with no runoff. All the water will soak into the soil at the base of the bush. In sandy soil do this daily until the bush is growing well. In clay soil, do this when the leaves show signs of slight water distress but at least every other day until itÂs growing well.

Yes, Peonies do fine with roses. Is there any requirements for the plants you plan to put with the roses? I mean, do they need to be drought tolerant or of a certain color? Do you want just a few kinds of plants in the area or a whole buch of different things?

If the area is droughty I would go with a purple Salvia, which would look nice with the pink and yellow roses. Sedums, Daylily, Euphorbia, and Ornametal Grasses would also work good.
If the area isn't too dry I would go hog wild and plant foxglove, Delphiniums, Campanula, Iris, Anemone, etc.

There are many more options too, but I think it would be best to find out if the area is droughty or not first.

Something evergreen would probably be a good idea.

You know, I think I just saw some kinds of nine bark when I was walking with my daughter last week -- very nice, but it might be too tall for what I'm thinking. I was thinking smaller/shorter plants around the roses, and the only requirement I can think of is that it isn't invasive/competitive with the roses.

It doesn't have to be drought-tolerant -- I have to keep the roses watered after all 8-).
I am WS Lady Lavender -- if that germinates I could put it there too. I like the idea of some kind of thyme or some other herb, and I could put coneflowers since the ones I have need dividing anyway.

I planted cheddar pinks at one end, minature daylilies on the front edge and Lilies among my pink roses. For earliest spring before the roses bloom there are hyacinths and daffodils behind the daylilies.

Also, Cabbages, Parsley, & Bibb Lettuce look terrific grown under and in front of roses!
Ruffly, Cascade Petunias are lovely, too. Lavender & Rosemary grown nearby help deter bugs and add their fragrance to the mix. Cosmos...yes.
Anything that likes the same environment.

I love having lavender beside the roses.

However, we're in our 4th day of rain and lavender likes to dry out. I will probably lose a few more plants, even though they are planted high and dry. The foliage is staying too wet.

the peonies would go great with the roses. Not only would the flowers correspond, but both like full sun, rich soil, and good drinks. I've even seen a magazine photo of a double peony blooming under a big antique rose bush in front of an old fence. Quite charming! I have two Mammoth Rose peonies planted with my old roses.

Slobber, slobber....just beautiful!
You could send some of that rain my way!!! We are high and dry! I am mighty tired of dragging that 100 feet of garden hose. I am only blessed by having my own well water.

If drainage is a problem, build up the soil where you plant your lavender plants with a lot of sand, rocks and gravel. Then you can water your other plants all you want (or all that rainfall) and the lavender will be happy too.

I agree with peonies with the roses - the rose garden at the Chicago Botanic Garden has a ton of peonies, too, and they look gorgeous together.

I like lavender with roses - and you can keep them up for winter interest.

I keep thinking I want lilies when I do my rose & peony bed. Maybe dianthus, geraniums (not sure if they would be happy in full sun, though), nepeta.

I added a pink Gerbera daisy and a lily of unknown color that was in the pot with the Gerbera to the pink rose bed this morning.

Sweet William dianthus is starting to bloom here and it goes with everything.

Are you aware the rugosa Therese Bugnet spreads by underground roots and will be a border all by itself soon. I have it and love it. For me it just blooms once and that is it. It does smell wonderful. I think I should just cut mine all down and let it start over but it is so thorny.....

gldnol, I did not know that. Not to worry, every spring my hubby goes kind of hedge trimmer crazy and starts lopping off shrub branches left & right. I'm like "Nooo -- not yet ... too late". LOL.

I once saw pink roses underplanted with a groundcover of tall, old-fashioned pink Heuchera --- I thought it was gorgeous, even though I don't like pink!

Yes, that's my cottage garden. It is undergoing some redesign that I started last fall. A few of the lavender fell victim to too much rain and will need replacing this year. They lasted 4 years.

The clematis is the standard purple Jackmanii. I have two on the rose fence and I just came inside from the garden -- they are already climbing.
