Giant Sequoia Help

I got this giant sequoia seedling about 2 and a half weeks ago, I was watering it every day but then I backed off and started watering it 2 or 3 times a week. When it arrived there were some brown needles on it but it had gotten worse ever since then, I've been leaving it outside and its been in 40's at night and the 50/60's during the day, what could I be doing wrong?

how did it get to you .. mailed?? .. where did it come from ... have you been leaving it in the sun .... was it grown in the sun.. or in a greenhouse????

did you transplant it ...

trees dont need all that much water .... depending on the potting media ....

i suspect stress from shipping.. or simply moving it ....

and probably too much water..

and maybe sunburn..

regardless.. the growth points look fine...

try not to kill it with too much love ....

Thanks for the info Ken, I did receive it in the mail, I got it from the Jonsteen Company in California. I live in Seattle so I could see how shipping and change of climate could have an effect. To answer some of your questions, I don't know how it was grown before I got it but I planted it in a terra cotta pot and when we actually get sunny days its been getting full sunlight for at least 8 hours.

This one is in my back yard near Harrisburg, PA. Just this past summer I found five seedlings growing on the ground around the tree. I still have four living in large pots. I was checking in here to get ideas for what to do with them during the upcoming winter. I think I will go with keeping them inside in the unheated basement. The seedlings are only about 4" tall and I am just not confident that they are ready for a winter on their own.

Not to quibble, but I don't think that 95% of the world figure is accurate. In China(20% of the world's population) most everyone uses Chinese measurements like lÇ, chÇ, mÇ, jÄ«n, etc. as do many SE Asian countries(especially ones with significant historical interaction with the Chinese). I'd bet that probably 1/2 of English literate people on the internet(ie. potential posters on gardenweb) use Imperial measurements still. I try to post both measurements to save people from having to convert them themselves, but I also like number crunching so it is also for a bit of personal want as well. I do forget to do this from time to time though. Anyway, back to the original posting, I too enjoyed the new website and thought it was very convenient to have all of the information brought together in one website. I think the general public(non-plant people) will find it easy to navigate and perhaps start a passion for plants within them(hopefully).

Actually, seedlings of trees are perfectly adapted to outdoor life. It is only those plants which have been greenhouse-raised from day one which need gentle acclimation to outdoor sun and wind. If this thing started on its own as an outdoor volunteer, it is outdoors that it should have stayed. Light levels indoors are very dim, even where our eyes do not perceive it to be so. And if you will think back to 5th grade science, plants run on this thing called light. Also, very likely overwatered in that huge pot. I mean "huge" for that size of plant. All nurseries everywhere start plants in tiny containers (if in containers at all) and only pot up one size at a time, so as not to lead to over-wet conditions and the resulting root loss. Think to nature. Seeds either fall where they are able to germinate or they don't. Then, amongst the numerous ones which do germinate, only a small percentage actually make it to adulthood. But those that do are utterly on their own, from day one.

its stressed ... repotting it will only stress it more .. DO NOT REPOT.. until it stabilizes ... some professionals believe that pots can be too big ... that it actually stunts growth ... spending too much time trying to fill the pot with roots ... so they grow in a given pot.. until the roots hit the sides and start down .. and then repot ... to the next bigger size ... the whole point of the potting media.. is a water management system ... the media allowing the water to run thru the whole mass.. and then shed the excess ... when improperly potted.. water either runs to sides and down the pot side ..or it can only flow thru the middle .. and right out the bottom.. with no water hitting where the roots are spreading thru the pot ... and pot size can be part of that equation ... trees grow in mother earth ... and you are making it infinitely harder.. trying to grow what will be a massive tree.. in a pot .. i killed way too many trees in pots.. before i figured out how different they were from the usual annual/perennials that are grown in pots ... soooo.. you are starting with a very hard project ... so dont be surprised.. if it isnt easy ... ken

Also I was wondering if anybody would know how much growth to expect from these little guys, I've had it for 3 weeks now and haven't noticed any new growth.

I have a few of these trees. I have always noticed this browning of lower branches since planting it a few years ago. The mistake I was making was I was watering it way to much, causing lower branches to die (i am guessing). They basically don't need that much water, especially if it rains naturally.
The first year I had it, it didn't grow that much, maybe a few inches in all directions. It will speed up a bit once established.
