what is pepperberry?

I have been running accross this name in books about wreaths, but am not familiar, must be Eastern native? can anyone tell me the latin name so I can look for it in the nursery?

Novita, I think they are berries from Schinus trees. From what I read, seems they are termed "exotic invasives" in FL and yet seem to be recommended as street trees in CA (Los Angeles). I'm not sure they would be hardy for you, plus some sites mention they can cause allergic skin reaction in some people.

A good substitute for long lasting red berries which can be used fresh or dried would be Nandina japonica. Probably easier to find locally and would bear berries more quickly. It's attractive yearround, evergreen, healthy and easily grown (one of my favorites...can you tell?)

There are places online to order the dried pepperberries, another option. I'm not sure I've ever seen any...but like you I've noticed them in books and got curious. josh

Hi, Novita. I ordered some of these a few years ago-I was curious about them, too. While they were very pretty, they didn't hold up too well-very papery and prone to breakage.

I do not have any photos. I looked up pictures of pernettya as suggested and that is not it. My plant was flat to the ground like moss rose with 1 inch long leaves that were tubular and the "berries" were in a tubular shape also and very minutes.

Nandina (I like to use the immature berries too, still green or coppery color). Also immature Blueberries of green/pink can be used. Viburnum setigerum has small dangling green, later red berries. Dogwood. Cotoneaster. I just arrange for personal use...not sure how these would do growing for commercial cuts. I've even used the green immature berries of Phytolacca (poke salad)...has great scarlet stem color. Fun to see if anyone recognizes it. josh

Wendy, I will try and get the pics of the wreath maker, bundles and wreaths today. Tim, the yucca are about 3' high and 3' wide, green and very sharp, almost like a alovera plant but huge. The pole comes out of the middle of the plant and is about 12' high with a flower/seed head on top. I need hundreds of the poles. Steve, I hope your knee deep in wreathmaking. The big ones usually take about 30 minitues once you have all the materials cut. To make the big ones we use a shelf attached to the back of the wreath maker. That wreath has corn tassel, sea lavendar, echinops, purple maj. millet, purple and white statice, red and purple gomphrena, hi-z celosia, and yarrow, so you were right at 10. Ooooh gosh no, don't introduce 'that' lol... I just spent a whole year pulling it out of my woods and to get rid of the last stubborn bits you have to dig it up. The woods around my house is FULL of it and there are trees that are 50 feet tall that have been pulled over and killed by it. It's also up in the fir trees strangling them as well. Thanks, it does look a bit tropical. I have two nandinas and neither one has produced berries yet! Lots of wild berries, if I get them before the birds do. Thanks again.
