OT: How annoying! New in-text ads

Have you seen those annoying new in-text ads GW has put in? You scroll over the underlined word they have chosen from your post and it will come up with ads.

Thankfully there is a feature to disable this. Go to the site I liked to and hit 'Disable'. I did it a little while ago and it seems to be working...

Just thought you guys might like to know...in case it bugged you as much as it did me, lol.

Read the directions at this link.

Anytime you clear your cookies you have to go the link and disable it again.

Most people clear their cookies every time they close their browser.

Thank you for this link. I have done nothing different to the computer, but these started appearing yesterday or the day before.

Once and for all: How to stop the iVillage ad onslaught. First we need to understand how it's done: iVillage doesn't bother to try and buy ads directly from all the various companies that show up on the pages of GW. Instead they use large ad-service agencies like doubleclick, akamai and pointroll. You can visit some of these sites if you'd like to see who's behind the ads. http://www.akamai.com http://www.doubleclick.com/us http://pointroll.com This makes it easy to block out all or almost all of the ads very easily, just block the originating sites. Right now all the ads on GW come from: http://amch.questionmarket.com http://a820.g.akamai.net http://iv.doubleclick.net http://i.ivillage.com http://m.2mdn.net http://tste.ivillage.com http://img-cdn.mediaplex.com http://ads.vmirror.com http://cmhtml.ivillage.overture.com http://ads.pointroll.com The Universal Solution.This will work on Windows systems for all browsers; IE, FireFox and Netscape. The Windows operating system provides a system-level method to block specific IP addresses before they even get to the browser. To effect this solution you need to edit a Windows system file called hosts. This file is located in the directory: Windows XP: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC Windows 2K: C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC Windows 98: C:\WINDOWS Open the file in Notepad. In this event the new ad source will have to be added to the list. The IE solution.Most of the ads are placed using Java$cript. You can remove the more offensive ads in IE with the browser settings. You can't however remove them all. To improve GW using IE do the following: From the menu select Tools -> Internet Options -> Security and click on Custom Level. Scroll down to the end of the list and you'll see an entry for Scripting. Disable all the sub-entries. Now select the tab labeled Privacy. In the bottom of the box that appears check on the option to block pop-ups. I recommend you also click on the button Advanced and select the option to block Third-party Cookies. NOTE: By disabling Scripting you will also effect the way other websites behave. You may need to get used to switching scripting on and off as desired. I think it's pretty obvious where that's heading when adobe starts coming out with developer tools to let developers convert flash based content to HTML 5 instead. One thing, for many commercial sites with flash content (like big box stores or news sites) there's often an app you can download to use instead that gives you access to the same content. I don't care for this trend, since I'd rather access the whole internet via a browser, but this seems to be the way things are going with portable devices. I hate flash and I think it's used stupidly for no reason on about 85% of the sites that use it, but I agree it's vexing not to have it on iOS. breezy, if you see a thumbnail for that page, then it's cached and you'll keep seeing it. Try emptying the cache/history (in settings>safari) and see if that helps.

You shouldn't be getting ANY popups with the following configurations in Firefox: (1a) Under Tools, Options, Web features: (1b) Block Pop Ups (check, ie click it so it has a tick) (1c) Enable Java (uncheck, ie click it to *remove* the tick) (1d) Enable Java Script (uncheck as above). (1e) Quit your browser (don't just close the window) and restart it. Still getting popups? If so: (2a) Under Tools, Options, Privacy: (2b) Cache (click on CLEAR button). (2c) Quit Firefox then restart. Still getting popups? If so, the big gun left is to clear all info stored in your browser, as it means that the annoying ads have been saved on your computer and are automatically activated when you visit a certain webpage. Problem is that if you rely on your browser to store passwords for you, they will all be cleared. (I have the cache set to be cleared every time the browser is closed, and so have to log on to every site anew, but for me it's worth it.) (3a) Under Tools, Options, Privacy: (3b) At the bottom right of the dropdown box, click the CLEAR button beside 'Clear all information stored while browsing'. (3c) Confirm that this is what you want to do (by clicking on the 'Clear all information' button that appears'). (3d) Quit Firefox and reopen it. Now, the popups MUST be gone. Well, Dirty G, we tried our best. Now the whole world must live with the outcome, as chosen by a majority of Americans. I just hope my presentiments of this 'people's movement' as being neo-fascist in nature, akin to 1930s Germany, are way, way off the mark. Perhaps Mr Trump will make a fine, and wise, leader. He certainly knows how to stir up the disaffected masses and make them believe in him, so let's hope it turns out that he uses that power for good, not evil. I doubt he'll be able to deliver on all those vague, feel-good promises, though. The rich will simply get richer and the poor will get poorer, leading to further social unrest, if he puts his previously stated policy ideas in place. He may well be skilled in the arts of salesmanship and demagoguery, but I don't get the impression he's studied economics - or anything else that will actually enable him to improve the situation for ordinary/less well-off Americans. Anyway, I'm sure this discussion will continue for a long time over on the Hot Topics forum. Some interesting comments on the Antique Roses forum too..

I clicked on the disable tab, but still get the links. What am I not doing right?

I had a difficult time figuring that thing out...

When you are on the 'Disable' page it will say down below "Disable Vibrant Ads" with a "Click here to Disable". Click on this just ONCE. Click it again and you will re-enable it, lol.

If it diables it correctly you will see the underlined 'Click here to disable' has changed to "Click here to Enable".

I found it very tricky yesterday! Had to keep checking on GW threads to see if it had disabled the ads or if I needed to go back and click something else. By the way, I read somewhere that a member had to diable their FireFox program in order to get it to work.

I read about this happening on the homepage 'comments' recently, but so far haven't run into any of the underlined words in posts. Knock on wood.

But, I do recall that - I think it was here - this was done a while back and some objection arose when organic type gardener posts were 'advertising' toxic pesticides, etc. by virtue of their underlined keywords.

I do understand the need for revenue to keep our GW boards up and running, but am not sure this is the ideal way. Time will tell how this shakes out.

If you have Firefox, you can download Adblock Plus and it will absolutely take care of any annoying popup ads. It has stopped ALL of those annoying ads that move, jiggle, fly across the screen etc. Gardenweb has the most annoying ads of any website I've been to, and Adblock had gotten rid of all of them. IF I remember correctly, you just go to "get add-ons" under 'tools', and find it there. However, if you are on a website where you need a window to pop up, you may have to disable Adblock temporarily. Hope this helps someone.

Ok, the underlined words are beginning to show up now ...... and it seems to be a MS Bing thing - shoulda seen that coming! All in all, still tolerable (easy to ignore) for the time being.

I have never had this problem, glad to say, but here's a suggestion. GW has a great Computer Forum, full of real experts who are always more than ready to help people.

Many of the questions are above my head, much less the answers, but they are kind and helpful to the newest of beginners. I go there all the time and recommend them highly. I'd bring this question to them.

I can't believe it! I just wrote the above, hit the preview message button--and the word computer was double-underlined in green and an ad appeared! Wow!

Well, I have now disabled it twice and then downloaded AdBlocker in Firefox...........still have the green words for ads.

I think it depends on browser AND operating system. I have Firefox and Safari browsers on a Mac. In Firefox I opted out, but still see them even with Adblock Plus. BUT with my Safari browser I don't see them and I haven't opted out there. Go figure.

Wow! Sorry you have had so much trouble getting it to work!

I agree with ginny, you might try going over to the Computer Help Forum to see if they know how to disable it with your program/computer. I went over there once with a question and they are very insightful.

There is a thread discussing the new in-text ads Thread here, and it seems many other people are having the same trouble getting it to stop. If you continue to have this trouble, contacting GW might be a good idea. Probably another glitch on their part that will take a week to fix, lol!

Wish I could have helped you more. Not great with the more complicated computer stuff...;-)
