I have a pup that I got from my brother on a visit to Tucson 2 years ago. It is rooted pretty well but really has not grown at all. I think this year I will subject it to full sun and see if that kick starts it's growth. They grow in full sun in the Tucson heat. I don't know much about them or if we even have the same plant. They get HUGE! I see you are Zone 8....what part of the country?

I've had mine in partial sun and in my dining room, which is a cooler room. I'm noticing that the leaves are starting to extend down past the pot edge, so if I ever put it in the ground it would be at the cost of some leaves, or maybe I would have to build a mound. That might work, unless too many leaves start going too far down.

I actually *aquired* it from a poorly chosen plant by our developments landscapers. The bought full size century plants to put next to the signage by the road, not even thinking that they would be closer to the end of their life cycle.

Sure enough one out of four bloomed this summer and has since disintegrated into a pile of dehydrated cardboard. I was able to zip out one night and get one of the pups.

I was going to put it in the front garden, but hubbs said no way. He fears the spines.

We had a close call, where one leaf seemed to be afflicted with something that was causing it to dry up and shrivel, so I got brave and cut the entire leaf. The cut caloused over and has not continued any farther up the plant.

I actually ignore the thing shamefully compared to my other plants. My cat adores it though, and spends hours laying in front of it, so maybe it's a vibe thing.

There are several different varieties of century plants & misnaming among them is common. If you want to know your variety you might check with a botanic park in TX that specializes in growing the different varieties.
Potted ones can burn in full sun, so the part sun sounds like a good idea.

I have a century plant and really don't know much about it, it seems to be root bound and I was going to attempt to repot it, I don't want any surprises when I pull it out of the pot, any suggestions? Do they like being root bound? I was also wondering what types of soil I need, I assume cactus soil but not sure? Types of fertilizer? Its going to be going from an 8inch to a 12inch, it is a fairly large century plant, its "leave" are around 2.5 ft in length, does this sound right>

If you pull it out of its pot, you will most likely find tons of roots....
I just replanted mine because it was leaning....the soil had really broken down and it needed some fresh. I even trimmed the roots and removed a few spiraled off-sets. My biggest surprise, which shouldn't have been, is there were ants in the soil (from being outside last summer)....I suppose I will need an insecticide.

I am certainly hoping it will be fine.

BTW...all Agaves are called Maguey. Agave is synonymous with Maguey.
