Plants for Difficult Places

PLants for fast moving drainage ditch

We have a creek/ditch that exsits a storm culvert and always has water moving slightly at a constant level until it rains. When it rains the water level can rise several feet and fast enough to move cinder blocks. Is there anything that could withstand that kind of current? I'd like to plant some low growing things that would enhance the efect of the water feature-there are trees along the banks and rocks so it looks like a natural stream.

How about Creeping Jenny? It seems to be pretty sturdy stuff - I have it growing in my artifical stream. (admittedly the current can't move cinder blocks) The only problem is that it really takes over!

I'm thinking more in the line of ferns, small shrubs, cannas or elephant ear etc.

I'm sure the depth of the fast water near the edge would make a difference. The blocks were at the bottom of the creek which remains swift for hours to a day after, depending on the type of storm, but some of the edges where I'd like to plant may get flooded only several inches during the rain and some only for several hours after a storm. Because we're down stream of a culvert-the creek only gets as high as the culvert can hold. If we were up stream that would be different.

I'm thinking the length of time to establishe roots, would be crucial. How could I protect something until it became established? Is there some kind of mesh that could be placed over the roots

A catch basin at the upper end of your ditch might reduce or elliminate sedimentation. It would have to be designed to be deep enough to slow the water down so it will drop particles it is carrying. Once a year or so you will be able to drain and excavate the debris from this spot leaving the rest of your stream much cleaner. The basin can be design tastefully. It is done here in Dallas Texas at several locations where people have dammed up stream beds which the city uses as storm sewers. The debris which is removed from the catch basin can be used as mulch or fill when it dries out.

Thanks folks. I will get some pics up tomorrow. The gravel is crowned, the excavator said this was the best thing to do in case massively heavy rains run down the uphill slope... I spent a lot of time looking at landscaping books today and was convinced I could make a nice-looking "dry creekbed" sort of thing without too much money; I have a bunch of local granite rocks about that I fished out of the gardens.... but DH says tht this was part of the excavator's design for it..... that the gravel be HIGHER than the surrounding grade. What do you think of that? I have been resarching "french drains" and many actually say to cover with sod!!! So--- I just dont know what to do. All I can say is that it is UGLY, and I am spending a lot of time and $$ making a lovely landscape here. Granted, anything is worth having a dry basement and mold-free house (master bath is currently sealed shut because of the mold in the walls due to the bad drainage that necessitated the drain!)... But if I can camoflage this ugly scar somehow I would be a LOT happier... Will get pics tomorrow.

That is a raised catch basin that is designed to keep the retention pond from over flowing as surface runoff (either off site or to an area where it could cause harm). The idea is for the swale to hold the water until the soil can absorb it, but in the event that there is more water than it can hold, a subsurface drainage system will kick it as the water pours into the catch basin. Sometimes these are also put in to keep the swale from getting too deep and requiring it to be fenced off (a fence is required for retention swales capable of getting 2' deep or more here in Massachusetts). Many comunities are now requiring this type of drainage solution rather than putting runoff directly into subsurface systems. The idea is that the plants will use excessive nutrients from the runoff rather than having it get into the groundwater which ultimately finds its way to ponds, lakes, streams, or bays causing algae blooms and other problems. We commonly design these on commercial projects.

it's definitely not nutsedge, which has a different and distinctive look. first question to ask yourself:is it the exact same grass as the rest of your lawn? if it is, then extra water or fertilizer in that area is producing extra fast growth. If it's definitely a different plant, then you have a weed grass in there. I've had that. Big mess. Hard to get rid of. Good luck

My first thought was chain-link fencing.

If we knew what part of the country you were in, we might be able to suggest appropriate plants. Elephant ear & canna seem pretty fleshy, more likely to shred. It sounds like you need something tough.
