What soil to use for a large pot?

I'm going to grow some plants in a large barrel or two this summer.

My question is about the soil to use. Should I use a good potting soil, should I use compost/triplemix/soil, or should I use a combination of both? I heard that using regular soil in a pot is too heavy and will suffocate the plants/roots. On the other hand, these plants would, I assume, require nutrients and fertilizer just like they would in the garden?

I was thinking of using potting soil, but mixing in some regular soil and some triple mix. What do you think?

When you grow roses or shrubs etc in pots, what sort of soil do you use to get the best and healthiest results?
