I have seedling with curved thorns. Im pretty sure that being recurved is the hallmark of FD. the straight ones are just non varietal Poncirus trifoliata. I think :-)

Plants which do not come true from seeds should normally be propagated by grafting or cutting to retain their variety name.
Seedlings from Poncirus trifoliata 'Flying Dragon' are variable in their degree of contortion and thorn curvature.
You can call them whatever you like, but because most are similar to the mother plant it is sensible to also call these 'Flying Dragon'. I think the remainder should just be called Poncirus trifoliata - Flying Dragon seedlings.

So---how does one root cuttings from 'Flying Dragon'?

Well the FLying Dragon, in addition to being slow growing, is Difficult to propigate. I had heard this from others, and have seen the results myself. I Purchased 2 small plants from a Bonsai vender, and lost one(even though both were being treated the same). I have a three year old Dragon and over the past 9 months, I have had no sucess in propigating it from cuttings. Only about 20% of the cuttings have set roots, and all of the ones that set root ended up dying, withing a month of being transfered to pots. Now before you suggest that I just have a Brown Thumb, During the same time period, I have been successfully propigating the standard Poncirus trifoliata. It is really begun to bug me. I know that the standard trifoliata has better cold hardiness, but I just love the Curved thorns, and wnat to make a Hedge out of the dragons. So if anyone has found a trick to get The Dragon to propigate lemme know. The 3 year old dragon I have has very curved thorns, which is why I am looking at cloning rather than gathering seeds.

Flying dragon makes about 50% true nucellar seedlings, and about 50% hybrids. So in a block of seedlings, if you pick the half that are most uniform (highly contorted stems and thorns), you'll likely get mostly true FD.
