Plants for Difficult Places

plants to use in hot strip

I want to change the appearnce of the front yard with heat tolerant flowering perennials that are low in water use. The hot strip is about 20 feet long and 5 feet wide next to a street. Behind the strip is a mature maple tree which shades the street and strip till about noon. What plants have you used in similar locations? Thanks for your ideas.

Plantings in the areas between the road and sidewalk or in traffic triangle areas became known as a "hell strip" plantings some years ago. Here is a link to an article about these plantings (it's by a NW garden writer who may have coined the phrase).

Plants recommended for xeriscaping are very good for these dry areas. Prairie plants are often good candidates(I see you are in Nebraska, so you may be familiar with prairie plants).

I think that the end result is often weedy and unkempt looking in these plantings--maybe because they are surrounded by pavement which emphasises the textural quality of the plants. I prefer a simpler,lower planting; no more than 24" high plants of 2 or 3 varieties. I think a strip of two varieties of blanketflower(gallardia) and nepeta 'Walker's Low', for instance, would be beautiful; they take dry soil and some shade, would love PM full sun, and bloom from June-frost. There are several new gallardia cultivars this season being heavily marketed. One of the new red ones and the shorter 'Goblin' would do well together.

There are all sorts of combinations, but I would keep it simple and avoid the cottage garden look. Take a look at the photo in the article and you may see what I mean.

Sometimes we just have to accept the inevitable--neighbors' carelessness, snow damage, too much rain, not enough rain, soil that is not up to par etc etc etc...but we have to consider the look of the property...especially where others look on it, as in the front of our properties. So to that, I still say a low growing hedge that stays green all year and is an enhancement of the strip is the way to go. Surely we can think to guard the plants in some ways and think the neighbor might appreciate the look of greenery too..it surely does reflect on his house as well being a boundary line item. Getting on friendly terms with the driver about how he can also guard the hedge might make him appreciate it as well. Then there's the other side of the coin....plants that live for ???...a short stay and then die. What look is left. A flowering hedge--such as a rose hedge, would look super, but then even a rose dies back and winter is not on friendly terms with this plant. Hedges can do so much.

Thanks y'all The rule is vegetation cannot come over the curb. Bottom line. I started with the plants further back, BUUUUT they do reach for the sun and ended up where they are really happy in bazing hot sun with a passiflora carulea and the china rose Mutablis behind them. To edge the moonflowers would mean me out there cutting off the brances with buds all summer. I've dug out the roots of the older plants, there will be younger plants from remaining seeds. But as sad as it makes me, I'll dig them out. I always give some away, so hopefully I'll find more homes for them. New neighbor really enjoys the view but the city program is simply put complaint driven. To keep her from complaining I could offer NOT to complain that her new section of fence that is 10 ft tall is out of code or I could offer NOT to turn her in for allowing her yard crew to leave bags of trash out a day or two before trash day. Code says they can only be out at 7pm day before. But I really don't want to engage in that. Sooo, I see zebra grass and sedum in my future and Moon flower give away too. I moved the big old roots into the back yard. I guess it's time to change the show. grateful for all the great ideas! cynthia

Twenty inches is quite narrow, but the grass Calamagrostis 'Karl Foerster' stays quite narrow and upright and would give you some height against that fence. Sedums of many types would also work, tall and groundcover types. You could also plant the grasses and plant low sedums around them. Pretty easy to keep them all in control.
