Bummer that budgets exist.

Since I have a thousand things to do today, I'll only mention the one daylily I could not live without:

KENT'S FAVORITE TWO

Why? Well, it isn't the latest and greatest, but down here in super hot and sunny Texas, reds fade badly by afternoon. This one holds its color, blooms prolifically well above the foliage, and catches the eye. I dearly love this daylily. And...more importantly, it can be surrounded by rusty plants and there never has been the slightest sign of the "plague." Of course, I am partial to red. I have other ones like BORN TO RUN, HEARTS OF FIRE, SAPPHIRE SKIES, etc. but they do not hold a candle to KENT'S.

Ah, just thought of another one from Marietta Gardens:

FIREFLY FRENZY

This light yellow daylily stands heads above everything else, and literally lights up the garden. It has a very large blossom which looks like a fluttering bird.

Those pictures above of VICTORIAN LACE make me want to move immediately to Nova Scotia! My VL is very pretty, but nothing like the ones posted here.

Kjean, the Yazoo Elsie Hinton I really like and there is definitely something to be said for good garden performance..I have a hard time deciding between the value of that one (and only one *sigh*) astonishing bloom and then one that is not AS breathtaking, but just keeps blooming and blooming

One of the first I ever bought, one of the best reds I ever saw.

Here's an enthusiastic "me too" for Kent's Favorite Two. I've only had it for one summer but it turned in an impressive performance in a problem spot with afternoon shade.

The last one I need to buy this year is "Santa's Little Helper". I saw it at a daylily show and it looked drop dead gorgeous. As described above - like dark plush velvet. One of the few reds I've seen that just might not clash with the red of a rose. Does anyone know a reliable company to buy this at a reasonable price?...Off the top of my head my 5 are:

Maryl, Santa's Little Helper IS so beautiful.I had loaned out my camera last so I didn't get any pics, but it's really gorgeous in person. The companies I usually try to loyally order from don't sell it, but I've seen it from a few diff. sellers on the LA.

So nice to hear all the good things about Santa's Little Helper. I just got it last year.

crackingtheconcrete, I'm a performance nut so I'd pick the one that performs like crazy over the one that may be a little more gorgeous, but is stingy with the blooms every time.

Cindy, I hope you will like it. :) There are lots of reds that are nice,(now I'm curious about Kents Fave 2) but as I was telling a friend, If I could make a dress out of SLHelper and wear it, I would. :)

waitforspring,buttercup eyes IS nice-thanks for the pic. I have a really limited space, so I am tryign to only spend $$ on things that either look good a few seasons or give a big show.

Rita, you're right.Dayliles are so addictive, also.I keep trying to get other perennials but my eye wanders back over to daylilies.

Sad to say I have Santa's Little Helper and do not like it much. Have the rest of it leaving this spring. Grew well and good increase, lovely texture, nice all round plant but for me I do not like the flower. If you like red though you will love it.

SANTA'S LITTLE HELPER vs. BOLD MOVE - Has anyone compared these two in person?

I ordered FIERY TEMPER from Maryott last year, and he sent BOLD MOVE as a substitution. When I looked up SLH, it looks a lot like BOLD MOVE, but BOLD MOVE is larger overall and has higher bud count according to the AHS database.

So I was just curious if SLH is more attractive than BOLD MOVE or better in some describable way. Maybe it's just closer to a pure red?

Interestingly, they're almost the same price at Maryott this year and both are BOGO.

Thanks for the info on Santa's Little Helper and Maryott. Unfortunately mid June is waaaay too late to be doing anything bareroot. Maybe fall if they don't shut down too early. Below is the picture we took at the 2009 Tulsa Daylily show of SLH. Not a great picture but just brush the petals with velvet and you will get the true picture:

That's a really neat idea for a photo. It really shows the differences in the blooms. That being said I can't get over how similar a red color they all are! And a really nice red color too!
I would love to see more photos like that. Other than showing the number of blooms on a growing clump this is almost a better way to compare the blooms between cultivars.

Maryl,

Mid June is very late for planting down south, but you can always order early and request fall shipping. When I ordered from Maryott last year, he suggested to ship my plants on the last possible day (which was right at the end of September), and that worked out great. You might miss a bloom cycle, but I think it's worth it for happy plants.

And I agree - the picture of the six reds is a great way to compare!

Hearts of Fire has never bloomed well here and is smaller than I expected. I think the older Passion for Red is much nicer and more vigorous, even though there might not be quite so much frilled nuance in the blooms.

Couldn't pick out five! I have a hard time getting rid of 'reject' seedlings.
