Very smart. The deer seem to know just how expensive things are, & go for the high dollar shrubs first! 😉 I’ll bet that your forsythia hedge is gorgeous when in bloom. The location of my (would-be) hedge will mostly be viewed from above through a kitchen window, so that‘s why I’m interested in doublefile Shastas. But when I’m actually in the yard, I’d like privacy from the neighbors, so I’d really rather have a dense evergreen for year round coverage. Add part shade & deer to that equation, & I’ve got few options, it seems. Maybe I’ll buy one shasta & put it somewhere else in the yard & just see what happens… Have you ever tried winter jasmine by chance? I’m wondering if the deer like that. I have a wall that I’d like to let it weep over.

I feel your pain. I too have been suffering with the explosion of the deer population.....living in a rural area doesn't help. For years, I used to tolerate the odd nibble on various plants, but now if I don't fence off my L shaped row of cedar trees in front, and the plants within...I would be left with sticks. The deer fencing (bird netting) just didn't work for me, they cut it with their hooves and entered. I had to upgrade to a heavy netting used by fishermen. I built a permanent wooden fence in the back of my yard and am in the process of moving deer favorites to the back. Unfortunately I can't move the trees as they are too old, will just replace in a few years. Ones they aren't supposed to like, but forgot to read the manual and thus eat are...crocus, weigela, kalmia, clematis, blue fescue grass, yucca and iris. They have left alone; spireas, mugo pine, kolkwitzia, crocosmia, bleeding heart, heuchera, hellebore, snow drops, allium, columbine, ferns and artemsia. What can I plant that is deer resistant? This list of deer resistant plants was compiled from Gardenweb postings and other sources. As you can see from the follow-up postings at the bottom of the list, RESISTANT is the key word. Deer can be quite the gourmets and yours may still be partial to some of the plants on this list. Deer that are hungry enough will eat everything bare from the ground up into the trees as high as they can reach. Many of the plants on this list are poisonous or medicinal. I was all ready to quibble and say that I thought Four-O'clocks were Mirabilis, not Clarkia, when I saw you'd got Mirabilis listed as Four-oclocks under annuals. The joy of common names! Have you ever grown clarkia? I understand they do OK here and are really attractive in part-shade. What's tasty is apparently a regional issue, also, so you might try checking your local (in my case, Maryland Cooperative Extension's Web site) extension service for a list of plants that are "deer candy" or avoided by deer in your area. I've had them nibble on Japanese white spiraea (Spiraea albiflora) and the usual tulip and hosta foliage. They prefer my neighbors grass. She has it professionally taken care of every week. I wish she would stop. Our yards are attached and they wander up this way frequently. Moved from California to Virginia last year, so much to learn! Deer are different in different areas. For example mule deer in CA usually won't touch impatiens, but white tail in VA LOVE it. I spent a lot of money to fence in my back yard. The only sure way. (I hope) Also, they won't eat my iris, but they eat certain daylilies, but not others.

It seems to depend a lot on location :-) Deer in some areas have much broader appetites than those living in other places. And what other common deer fodder is available will also have a bearing. Snowberry is a native here and seems to be mostly ignored by deer. And beautyberry also does not seem to be high on their list of favored plants. Doesn't mean they won't sample but I wouldn't describe either as 'deer candy'. ps. I live in "deer heaven" also!!
