Yes, I know what you mean. I don't mind having one or two that have the gold edge, but you could have 5000 daylilies that all look relitively the same.

I think that's why I like the uf's and spiders and patterned eyes so much.

I like the edges as long as they are very small (1/4 inch or less) to "frame" the flower and accentuate it. Too big an edge and it detracts and confuses the eye. The biggest thing is hardiness and a lot of those fancy edges are not hardy up here in the North.

Here's a seedling of mine that doesn't have a fancy edge but is still pretty without. Is it "cutting edge"?....I don't think so....but some of the "cutting edge" out there on the market has way too much "frou frou".

Nice looking seedling,Leslie. I see many that I would buy and use in hybridizing,but don't because of the edge. Sometimes you just have an idea of what you want that doesn't include "bling"! It looks like it may be a dominant trait that would be hard to get rid of.Anybody tried?

The big edge actually is not hard to get rid of if you cross it with something without an edge. You will still get seedlings with an edge but not a high percentage. I'm sure there are exceptions that people may note. I've found pollen from gold edged daylilies that I've crossed onto VINO DI NOTTE, MIDNIGHT IN MARRAKESH and PRINCE OF THIEVES have resulted in mostly non-edged daylilies. Also look into the parentage of the bubbly-edged daylily in question. If one of the parents doesn't have a bubbly edge, then you should get a higher percentage of non-edged children.

I must say that since I'm new to daylilies I really like the bling bling. Of course I have found myself drawn to many of the pink with the heavy gold edge. I'm sure that I have ordered at least 25 that look alot alike.

I like ruffles, lacy, toothy,and so forth. I am not crazy about the spider looking daylilies at all. We now have over 100 named daylilies and I didn't even get started until very late last year.

After turning in several more orders I will be adding over 100 new daylilies to my beds this spring. Along with some that I have just recently been ordering off LA.

I know I have alot to learn when it comes to daylilies. But I personally like the edged and fancy ruffled ones the very best. I guess it's to each is on. I also like the ruffled irises too. Go Figure.

oh,I like the bling too,Marian,just not on everything! I love the ruffles,but up here in zone 4 they can hang up when trying to open. What I would really like to see is a near white with a definate lined edge other than gold,with no eye.All I see are ones that look airbrushed. I want one that looks like it was drawn on with a marker.

Leslie, I think you've shown that seedling here before because I remember drooling over it. The edge on your seedling is more of a wire edge, and I agree that it doesn't detract from the watermark at all. Very nice.

Marian, I love ruffled TB iris, too. And I do like ruffled daylilies -- just not the gold ones! There's a gorgeous pink ruffled daylily that was shown here before (Pink Aloha?) that has beautiful ruffles that match the self. It just seems harder to find those types.

Betsy, I think there's a lot of interest in developing edge/no eye daylilies in colors other than gold. A wire edge on a white self would suit me just fine, too. Maybe you can create one for us. A pink or red wire edge on a white self would be perfect.

Yes Chris I've linked to that seedling before. Glad you like it....I hope it's doing OK out there in the garden with all the freeze/thaw we've been having. We have NO snow cover and it's frigid out there right now.

I saw a pic of a gorgeous seedling Saturday at my local club (NEDS) photography contest. It was an edge/no eye seedling but it had a 1/2 inch lilac purple edge that had gentle ruffles. I wish I had a pic to show. It was lovely!!

I like many of the edged daylilies and I wouldn't want to be without my Belle Cook. I plan on crossing Belle Cook with J T Davis and making lots of seedlings that Chris won't like. I agree I can be overdone and don't care for any of the pictures I have seen of Gary Colby. An edged one that is high on my wish list is Linda Beck. The edge is more like Leslie's seedlings, which are wonderful.

Chris - I like the gold edged daylilies IF they open properly. Many of them don't. Curt Hanson stopped hybridizing for those edges because of the northern opening problems. You can count on him to continue putting out intros you would like. Rice, Benz and Sellers are others continuing to offer some new intros without gold edges.

Leslie - I've seen all your seedlings before on Tinker's, but they look terrific on your website. I especially love the lavenders and purples! That lavender with the patterned eye is a knockout. I hope you go on to introduce that one.

Debra - I remember Curt Hanson telling me an anecdote about gold-edged daylilies, and how people sometimes see the edge without seeing the whole flower. Often, the edge is all it takes for people to buy. His cultivars continue to top my list of must-haves. Funny you should mention Sellers -- I have quite of few of those, and have added Garden Dancer, Spice Trade, Frieda Allan Jerrell and Lovely Diane for this year. And I really like most Rice intros, too.

Edward, your photo has a nice, subdued gold edge that doesn't overwhelm the flower. And I've seen photos of Linda Beck that are beautiful. So I bet I wouldn't hate ALL your seedlings. :o) I agree about the photos I've seen of Gary Colby. Others that come to mind with overwhelming gold edges are John Peat and Spacecoast Cranberry Kid, but I believe there are a lot out there.

Leslie, I'm off to take another look at your seedlings. Any plans to introduce or sell any of them?

Chris, last year I came to the same conclusion you did. There are exceptions and I love the big ruffly edges but I wish there were more that had edges which matched or complimented the flower's primary color or the eye color. I don't care very much for flowers in the pink/red/purple colors that have a yellow or gold edge though some of the softer pinks like Belle Cook are lovely and easier on the eyes. The photos I've seen of those "green" edged daylilies just don't seem to appeal to me either. Of course if I was ever offered any gold-edged beauties as a gift I doubt I'd be turning it down lol.

I think I started leaning away from the big edges a couple of years ago, and I find myself likeing tightly ruffled edges that match the color of the flower like on MAKE BELIEVE MAGIC, or the thin wire edges like on this seedling.

Chris, I love the gold edges. I don't think it detracts from the flower at all. Now one like Gary Colby, i certainly can pass up but a lot of the gold edges aren't overdona. I also like the tight ruffled edges without the gold. I also like the watermarks. The seedlings above at fantastic but I still like the gold...Ellie

Ed-I love the look of BELLE COOK as well. The edge is not overdone. A very generous friend of mine gave me some seeds out of BC and I have a couple real nice seedlings now out of it but one has too large of a ruffle for Chris's tastes ;~) How well does BC do for you up where you are? I'm tempted now to pick it up. I just checked out LINDA BECK- WoW what a looker! I'm curious to know how it does in the north.

Debra-I also know you from Tinks.....I love the patterned eyed seedling as well. I just about fell over when I first saw it as I wasn't breeding for patterns and didn't have patterned parents to work with. I've attached the pic for anyone to check out. It bloomed for the first time this past summer....I've made a few crosses with it and they are growing under lights at the moment. If the plant underneath the pretty face is good then I'll introduce it - if not then it will be a bridge plant. I thought it unusual since it has a white edge. I'm no patterned expert, but I don't recall any patterns with a white edge around it.

Chris - I'm new at all this, having made my first crosses in 2004 and seeing first blooms in 2006. I'm thrilled with what I've seen so far and I hope to introduce the best ones. I'm so glad that you and the others here like daylilies without the huge 1+ inch edges because we just don't get them up here in the north and too much edge is a distraction IMHO.

Thanks Mona! Up here in Rhode Island it takes two years from seed to bloom. I've been fortunate that about 15% of my seedlings bloom in the first year to give a "preview" of what that years crop will look like. We have tough winters with no snow cover and many freeze/thaw cycles. Hardiness is one very important criteria I breed for as a result. I would love to have a greenhouse to speed things along but that will be many years out.

I am with Ellie on the love of watermarks. I am SO drawn to them. I didn't set out to breed watermarks but those are what I'm getting a lot of. A gorgeous watermark with a narrow gold,light gold, or white edge to frame it would be fabulous! Of course, with 5-way branching and a bud count of 40 too :~)

Leslie, that is a beauty and ranks second only to the cerise one shown previously. The white edge is nice, and anything with a watermark can live in my garden any time. Your first posted seedling reminds me of the coloration of Hanson's LOVE IN VAIN, but with a nicer watermark. Great work!

Funny you mention LOVE IN VAIN as I just picked it up last year. The color is real nice and I hope to work with it this summer. That watermarked bitone seedling you mention is out of Curt Hanson's work.....it's out of GUIDED BY VOICES which is beautiful in it's own right. It is producing fabulous seedlings and is hardy up here. I can't recommend GBV enough!

Belle Cook does wonderful up here in Nova Scotia. It is new to my garden but I have seen it two years in a row at Marie Stuart's garden and it is my favorite of her daylilies, and she has ALL the good ones. The seedlings from Belle Cook tend towards the ruffly edges. A cross I am planning on is the same one that made Fame: J T Davis X Belle Cook. I was also considering crossing Belle Cook on Shores of Time, Victorian Lace and Joan Derifield.

Chris, I said I liked gold edges but I didn't clarify. I don't like chicken phat. GC is like that. Although, those probably wouldn't be cp for me. I would probaably just get a nice gold edge. I like the pencil line and the nice thick gold. I have a good many seedlings that I am axious for this year. Last years blooms were nice but I can tell more about them the second and third years. I also have quite a few with the watermarks which we both love. C'mon spring and do your stuff so we can see!!!!! Ellie

I'm with you Ellie on the watermarks and gold edges. The chicken phat tends too turn me off but a ruffled light gold is appealing.
