I received this hippeastrum from Edna, my gardening buddy, when I visited the US Christmas 2006. I brought it back to VN with me and it has since bloomed for me faithfully for two years now, in my care. This year it bears two scapes and the first one has 5 buds, 2 opened on New Year Day (but I was away so I could not photograph it !).

Thank you, Edna, for the meaningful present! Your friendship grows stronger and prettier every year.

Most gorgeous! In my part of the US, they are often grown in the garden -- Brent and Becky's Bulbs calls them 'tulips for the South.'

They're a cheerful bright spot inside, mid-winter.

Beautiful. There's a house near my parents that uses Amaryllis instead of lilies. HUGE red blooms every year.

Jodi, this is a lot of fun! It must be so great to have so much going on in your garden. Part of the reason why I got my hipps was to make up for the fact that I no longer have regular access to a camera, computer, or deluxe cable TV. Josh, thank you for that bit of info. Many of the other bulbs have some roots to show off now. These are from one of the reds. Time for an update. Temptation is blooming right now and I LOVE it! Two scapes, same height, 4 flowers each all at the same time. I tried to self all of the flowers except for one, which I put Lemon Sorbet pollen on. Lemon Sorbet is blooming in a more sequential manor and the blooms don't last as long. I selfed two of those flowers, but I may do something else with the last two now that Gervase is not really Gervase. Maybe some green x green action soon. Too early to tell if seedpods are on the way? That's right, I got my first mislabel. The flower is pretty much the same color as Lemon Sorbet and is bigger. I'll get a better picture of its shape when it is fully bloomed. Even though it's a very beautiful flower, I was really looking forward to Gervase and I'm really bummed. Everything else checks out so far though, and my next set of flowers to bloom will be Royal Velvet, Red Lion, and Benfica. They'll offer great contrast sitting next to the green flowers. The Gervase mislabel. Here are Red Lion, Benfica, what should have been a Gervase, and Royal Velvet. I'm glad the reds are blooming all at the same time so I can compare them all together. Still nothing but leaves from Orange Sovereign. Here is Temptation with Lemon Sorbet. A group shot of Lemon Sorbet, mislabeled Gervase, and Temptation with flash against a white piece of cardboard. Without Flash If I were to start this project over I would do many things differently. 1. Only 5-10% of the Hydroton that I have soaked for 2+ weeks still floats, so I'm assuming that the rest is fully saturated with water. That will improve the wicking ability of the LECA when used in semi-hydro and is less disruptive to the roots while watering. 2. I should have kept the bulbs a third of the way buried (like how I originally had them before I removed the rotting roots). Unless you have very high humidity, not much of the moisture wicks its way to the top in tall pots. You can either increase the humidity, or use shorter pots. For now, I just spray the top layer every 2 days or so. 3. I would have left the rotting roots in the pots. They would have made their way out eventually because of the constant flushing when the plants are watered, plus they help anchor the plants for a while. I also messed up many growing roots that time I did remove the rotting ones. Hydroton doesn't hold the plants very securely at this point in time, not a good thing since I have to move the plants to the sink to be watered. 4. Heat mat. I should hade one to put the plants on the day I planted them. They encourage new roots and increase the wicking through the medium. That really helped Joker and Lemon Sorbet. 5. K-L-N. I should have had that at the start too. I'll be soaking the roots of any future bulbs I get in K-L-N instead of water before I plant them. By the time I got my bottle of K-L-N, the bulbs already had rotting roots. They would have absorbed more of the hormone had I given it to them sooner. In short, I should have been more prepared with the materials and researched more. Thankfully, hipps are forgiving. I'm glad I didn't jump into semi-hydro with orchids. I still have yet to move any of those plants over, but at least I have all the supplies to do so now. Jared

I have read somewhere that hybridizers also color code all the "discarded" bulbs. This means that all that do not make the cut for further development into a new variety get coded into Red, Wite, Orange, Striped, etc. then sold as is. So one source of these kind of bulbs can be this. I don't really understand growers though who simply grow these bulbs for color... If there are named hybrids, why just grow for color? Is it so hard to write an actual name on the bag? Or they might not want to pay royalties for the copyright owners, so they simply get a named variety and just replicate it based only on color. Colors are not copyrighted. Some of the varieties are already out of the copyright protection, I assume, so they can be grown freely. I assume Minerva and company are in this cathegory.

Thank you for all the informations Donna. The final news is that the therapy works well. First of all I powdered the sick places with cinnamon and left for a while and then got the fungicide spray (also went to buy chocolate eggs for Easter) and used the spray three times, leaving at least 30 minutes between each spraying. I'm leaving the bulbs to rest over the night and dry a bit and will put them on soil in the morning. The good news is that most if not all of the rust and red spots are gone. All mould and decay too. I do hope the bulbs will grow back, and the stress won't influence the blooming period. Robert

All this reminds me of Marek's disease in poultry. Some of the ornamental breeders on finding Marek's in one bird cull their whole flocks over and over. On discussing this with my avian veterinarian he says that all birds carry Marek's but, some show symptoms and some do not via stress or poor genetics. One of my friends that had a large collection of Hippeastrum collection gave me his entire collection because of perceived TMV several years ago (large). He was going to burn them. I adjusted the PH of the soil, sprayed for bugs, and all turned back a dark green. Go figure. Are they infected? I don't really care. They bloom and grow fine for a long time. A few look mosaic when I first drag them out of the basement and put in the full sun when their leaves are burned. Maybe that is what he saw. Who knows.

I love orange flowers and that is truly spectacular.

From just what I can see of your yard behind that flower in the photo, it appears your whole yard is a garden of loveliness.

I love Amaryllis!!!! I have a red one this year, getting ready to bloom. I usually keep them year to year, but I think the last one ended up in a squirrel belly. ;-))

Oh, about this part of my garden. I must admit that I haven't given it much care for the past two years... But thanks to our weather/climate, everything's still green as they should. I will post more photos of our yard when I tidy it up for Chinese New Year.

ChÃºc Má»«ng NÃ£m Má»i!!!! Oh Xuan, what a surprise! I have never seen an amaryllis perform as magnificent as yours. To see it bloom from the other side of the world brings me such great joy. You have a special touch with everything that grows.

Annie, I'm also an Aquarius :-) The rat was last year. I think 2009 is the Year of Ox.

Xuan, it's simply gorgeous, grown to perfection. The only amaryllis I have is Papillio, the one with maroon stripes and green shadings. Lost the mother bulb after having it for years, now waiting for it's offset to bloom.

Oh, darn it, Ed! I thought it was the other way around - Ox last year and Rat this year.
Oh my! That will not do. So that means New Years is in January this year.

Well, I got my own year (dragon) and element (wood) right anyway. :) (the wood element makes me mellow, instead of fierce, so I read in a book years ago)

My daughter is a June rabbit, my daughter-in-law is a February monkey, my oldest granddaughter is a May tiger and my youngest & newest granddaughter was born in February 2008....so that makes her a little rat?

Yeah... ChÃºc Má»«ng NÃ£m Má»i, Year of the Buffalo to everyone!(Ox means Cow, doesn't it? if so, not Ox, Buffalo it is!)

This year the New Year Day falls on January 25th. In Vietnamese culture, everyone gets one year older, regardless what his/her birthday is! So, I'm going to be 59 Lunar Year Olds! Wow, 59! Too old, ain't I???

Edna, that hippi is wonderful. These days, I check it first thing every morning. It looks so brillant, so bright, so vigorously full of life! Love it and many thanks to you, dear!

Annette, Papillio is very special, I like its blooms. It's on my wish list. This hippi from Edna performs better and better every year: 2006, blooms without leaves; 2007, one scape 4 blooms and some leaves; 2008, a bunch of beautiful leaves, 2 scapes, 5 blooms on the first scape and maybe 5 for the second scape, too!!! I hope the second scape will open on New Year Day. If it does, it will be best luck for me!
