Victoria or Garden Phlox

On the Texas Superstar site, they list a Victoria/Garden Phlox, a tall purple. I want some! Or at least, I think I do. I want that purple, old fashioned look, but do not want tons of problems.

What do you know of this plant? Will it make me fall in love, then keel over and die, thus breaking my heart? Start from seeds or transplants? Where in my yard would it like to live? (sun, shade, etc.)

I'm in the DFW area of Texas...hot and dry, or hot and humid, take your pick.

Thanks for posting about this garden phlox. I'd like to try it too. I have 'David', 'Eva Cullen', 'Shortwood' and 'Little Laura' and love them all.

Patti, thanks for that link. Did you notice in one place the info says this plant self seeds freely and in another that it doesn't set seed. LOL

I'm on the lookout for this. It reminds me of some phlox my mother used to grow.

Ciao all, I hope everyone had a great day out in the garden today. I know it's a back to work day for most people, but my goodness, what glorious weather to be outside. Thanks to all of you for such interesting trades and also for your knowledge and wisdom regarding perennials. I have SO much to learn about them still, thanks for your patience in answering my newbie questions. Tristan grabbed some things from the middle circle which I have no clue regarding the names of the plants or what sort of care they need, so as soon as I'm able, I'm hoping to post some pictures of them for ID. I'm so excited about all the lilacs! They're small, but I know they'll fill that space nicely and I can't wait to discover what colours they turn out to be. I put the dahlias in full sun and just barely covered the root/tuber/rhizome thingies. I hope that's what they need. Tomatoes/eggplants/peppers/tomatillos/basil all got a full day outside and tomorrow will be their first major dose of full sun. I'm hoping to get them in the ground before the weekend. Duane finished 2 additional tomato beds as a birthday present for me and got all the 8' stakes in this morning. The soaker hoses are all in place and now it's just a matter of waiting a few days for the plants to get fully hardened off. Big hugs to all of you, I wish the weather had been more pleasant but it was still a very fun event and thanks again to sydseeds for organizing the swap and for everyone's wonderful enthusiasm and generosity. I visited the gardens last fall and came away with a funny feeling that the gardens were too perfect, too colorful. I had planned on taking many photos but soon after getting there each bed began to appear the same. Each with many, many bright combinations. Lovely day trip from Vancouver, but a disappointing garden with all the bright annuals crammed together.

Marigolds, zinnias, canna lilies, and dahlias are blooming well for me. I also get the occasional rain lily but they don't bloom in enough profusion to be considered a heat-loving flower. You could also consider some dwarf varieties of crepe myrtles. Most people want the tall trees that they might end up to prune often, but there are actually short varieties of the crepe myrtles.

You might also like Fanick Phlox. These were developed by John Fanick of Fanick's nursery in San Antonio. They really handle TX weather. Mine were planted in full sun and took the afternoon heat very well. They smell wonderful and NEVER get mildew.
