Napa, did you plant all citrus trees the same time? Some trees take more time to acclimate than others.
Perhaps someone else can help as far as feeding..I'm in IL and only have one citrus growing in the garden, so 99% of my citrus are in containers. Hopefully, your tree needs time to aquaint itself with its new home..Toni

Biggest killer of new trees is poor drainage. The only way to check is to dig down next to the rootball to a depth equal to the bottom of the rootball. Make sure it isn't sitting in water. After that is eliminated, I agree you're left with patience.

My baby Meyer lemon also looked poorly when first planted. Even on our slope, I think it just sat there for the first year, looking chlorotic. I threw some citrus fertilizer at it a couple of times a year even tho the box said monthly. None of that seemed to make much of a difference. It just improved with age, as did our soils after years of mulch.

I live the southeast,Coastal Georgia, and i have a Meyer lemon in a large container, and i brought it into my home because of the cold nights we have been getting. This tree has some nice size fruit on it, but for some reason some of the leaves are starting to drop off. The tree still looks very healthy with good green leaves, i make shure it does not dry out, and i mist the leaves with water.Is there something i could do to stop the leaf fall? or is this normal for this time of year?

Ralph, there are two things you said that troubles me. 1. You say your plant is in a big pot. Have you recently repotted in this large pot? Too large a pot can cause all types of problems. Including constantly wet soil.
2. You said you do NOT allow soil to dry out. Actually, soil needs to dry between waterings..it shouldn't stay constanly wet..Only water when the top 3" feel dry.
It's normal to lose some leaves after time spent outdoors, unless you start losing more then 1/4 of the leaves. Is your tree in a bright area? The more sun you give it the better. Misting helps w/humidity, but a humidifer works best..I do both. Keep us posted how your trees is doing..Toni

The large pot theory is not true at all. Almost all of my potted citrus are in very large 15+ gallon containers. If you keep track of the moister in the container you will not have a problem. Plants in large containers will produce more root growth, meaning more vegetative growth. You do need to keep them semi dry in the winter months, but in small or large container it's all the same.

Meyer Lemons do drop leaves in the fall. I have several & they all have leaf drop once a cool spell sets in. They also start flushing again in a few weeks. I have one right now that has about 100 flower buds.

Toni - There has been talk on this forum through the years about large containers being a no-no, because of salt buildup and other peculiar reasons dealing with fertilizer. As I've told you many times -- based on quite a bit of professional experience -- the large container theory (as Laaz referred to it) is not an issue. I have placed newly-grafted seedlings in 25-gallon containers on numerous occasions, without any problems whatsoever. Granted, if your soil has less than desirable tilth, drainage will become a major issue. But, as Laaz mentioned, this could also be the case with small containers.

My Improved Meyer Lemon has dropped about 10-15 yellow leaves over the past month. It has flushed 10 times as many during the same period. Right now, I'm looking at hundreds of flower buds. However, mine is outdoors (I have no plans on bringing it in) and it has adequate drainage. The same tree, indoors, would likely drop more leaves and reproduce far fewer new ones.

AAE, the problem with overpotting is not only salt buildup, but many, too many people tend to overwater.
It seems if anything goes wrong with a plant, the first thing people do is water. Again and again and again.
I have seen numerous threads where people mention a problem w a plant, and how they thought, even though the soil was wet, even muddy, a drink of water would fix the problem.
I have also talked to people, while working at two nurseries, who do the same overwater thing..a problem arises, and the plant gets more water, to the point the plant either aquires bugs or rot.
A professional grower would know the proper time to water, but it seems the novice has a problem..
Then there are people who feel they must water a plant..I sometimes think it's out of boredom..(S)
So, do I think it's wrong to pot a plant from an 8" to a 12"? NOPE, not if a grower knows the proper time to water. Would I suggest a novice doing this? Nope..there's no way on earth..not after hearing horror stories about plants that died from rots..not to mention fungus gnats and other pests..Toni

Toni - I understand where you are coming from with your points about overwatering/excessive soil moisture. It is true that overwatering results in more potted plant deaths than any other cause, as I pointed out a few months back (a poll in an industry rag). However, it should be noted that watering PRACTICES aren't always the main culprit. In fact, excessive soil moisture is often caused by watering practices IN CONJUNCTION WITH poor soil composition. For example, I could water my citrus trees daily and wouldn't experience the same level of problems that some weekly-waterers have. Why? Because my soil drains exceptionally well, and there are no drainage trays. Think about it from a hydroponic standpoint, where root systems are exposed to water and nutrients on a daily basis and don't "drown." On the other hand, if a 'lazy gardener' took over my collection, he would likely kill it by June, because these trees require irrigation at least every other day during the summer months.

AAE, I understand your point of view and agree..
But you, being a professional, have dwelt with people who asked questions about their citrus. Repeatedly.
Playing devil's advocate, the average grower will buy a bag of soil, (I've even seen threads where people used top soil for outdoor use, only to bring plants indoors in winter) most of the time, a rich, black, heavy soil.
For instance, many ppl buy supplies at Walmart. Have you ever checked out their houseplant soil? It's so heavy, a 20lb bag feels like 50lbs. It's as close to outdoor top soil than any other soils I've seen or bought in other stores.
Secondly, depending where you live makes a huge difference. You know I live in Il and it's almost impossible finding citrus supplies. There isn't one nursery (and I've been to many) that sell citrus fertilizer, let alone a good soil mix. Not-a-one.
So, back to the average gardener..Most ppl, okay, let's call them lazy, lol, do not want to mix soils therefore use heavy soils that stay wet for months on end.
Perhaps if these same people lived in a warmer area, large pots wouldn't be a problem, but we live where we do.
AAE, we can debate this issue all day..LOL..Again, I agree wholeheartdely regarding large containers, but stick to my guns when we're talking the average gardener. And there are more 'average' gardeners than professionals. Toni

Toni - Whether you live in the deep south, or in the woods of Maine, using a prepared potting mix will cause problems when it involves citrus trees. As a resident of the south/southwest, I can assure you that we face the same problems that ya'll do when it comes to the proper soil for citrus. Trust me. I cannot go to the local Wal Mart and buy ready-made "citrus supplies." I've been a professional, as you mention. But, my (hobby) trees are potted in a homemade mix.

AAE, again I agree..It doesn't matter where one lives, heavy soil for citrus and most plants will cause problems. I just meant, a plant 'may' have a better chance drying out in warmer/tropical climates...

Citrus isn't the only forum I visit. I was referring to people who grow various plants, including C&S's.
Since I worked in two gh's, I would also like to include customers who visited the gh's and explain what they did when a plant didn't look up to par. They'd water, again and again, so much so, the plant expired.

I am not confused by your verbage. Some of the "Pro's" I'm referring to are: Stan the Citrusman, Dr. Manners, Dr. Childers, Millet, JML (citrus Joe), Laaz, Mr Texas, Cactusrequieme, & MANY others who have given great advice over the years here, either because of schooling AND experience or just years of hands on experience. Those are the Pro's I'm referring to & I think you know that. They have never referred to themselves as PROFESSIONALS. They just ARE!

AAE Sorry to get back to the issue of lemon tree leaf drop again, but you said you would never dream of bringing yours inside where it would lose more leaves and produce fewer new ones - is this always true? I've had a small indoor potted meyer lemon for 3 years (in UK) and it has fewer leaves all the time. I repotted it a few months ago after it had produced it's one fruit, then pruned it for the first time. Nothing happened since then except last week another leaf fell off! What can I do? The new pot doesn't have a drainage hole. My plant is tiny and does nothing.

Sweet, your pot really should have drainage holes. It's possible water is sitting on the bottom of the pow w/no escape.
You probably should have waited before repotting. At least until spring. This could be one reason your plant isn't doing anything right now. Plus the fact, it's winter and even though citrus don't go totally dormant, they do slow down.
AAE choses to keep his plants outdoors yr round, but he also has the option because of his climate.
I wish I could do that, too, but my citrus would freeze because of the cold weather here in IL. So, they in the come in autumn, and out in spring.
Some citrus are more prune to leaf drop when brought indoors, but it depends how the citrus is cared for..
It's best to bring inside before cold temps strike,and should be done gradually. This way there is less change of winter leaf drop. In ohter words, if you bring plants in late in the season, from a cool, fresh air place, into a heated, dry air house, you will have problems. Late Aug to early Sept is the best time to lug plants back indoors.
They should also be hosed off thoroughly in case there are pests on the plant. Then placed in your sunniest window..South or west.
Also, there's no reason to prune. This halts chances of flowers/fruits. If your tree is grafted, the it's best to remove rootstock under the graft line ASAP. Other than that I wouldn't prune leaves. Toni
