Normal for half of Bakeri to be budding while other half isn't?

I transplanted a 4 foot tall Blue Spruce Bacheri last fall. A few weeks ago, it finally started to push new growth. The top 1/3 of the tree is pushing good new growth from the ends of all branches (including the leader). However, the middle 1/3 of the tree only has a couple of noticeable buds breaking, and the lower half of the tree isnt' doing squat. I have tried to see if the lower branches have healthy buds, but I literally don't see much of anything there... The tips of those branches are very tiny, hard to make anything out. If I look very close I see a tiny black bud. I suppose it could be dead.. like I said, hard to tell.

Thoughts?

how late in fall..

what was the source of the plant?? .. bigboxstore end of season blow out???

how did you plant it..

what kind of winter..

wheres the picture??

and most important.. if it loses or sacrifices all the lower branches... as they are dead if there are not buds .. CAN YOU LIVE WITH IT LIMBED UP half way ... it surely will make no difference in 5 years ... it will be all about your tolerances ...

It was purchased from a big box store in the fall, *but* had just come off the truck from the supplier. How the plant was maintained prior to that, I do not know, but it was on the box store parking lot less than a day. It was b&b. Root system seemed a touch on the small side, but what it had seemed to be in decent shape. Planted on a hillside with good drainage, no amendments. Winter and spring both *very* wet here in the midwest.

Again, hard to say if the buds on the lower branches are healthy or not. They certainly are "small." But now that I think about it, the buds that are pushing get a few more hours of sunlight per day than the ones that are not, so perhaps that accounts for the timing difference.

I'll give it a few more months. If it buds out, great. If the lower branches die, I'll put something else there in its place, in the fall.

Mari, you sound like me. Friday night, I slammed my left foot into the base of the couch....ouch! scream! cuss! THEN, I got up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and slammed my left foot again, but this time, into the ottoman...brought tears to my eyes. Well, here I sit with 2 broken toes and 1 fractured toe. Man they are sore! And like you, I had rose work to get done this weekend...oh well. Take care of yourself and take it easy!

Mike.. Email me through GardenWeb with your address and I'll be glad to send you some pollen.. I've already put "Tinkerbell" on 2 flowers of Evergreen and so far they seem to have taken. I'm going to stick to the minis with this one. You're welcome to put it on anything you wish, but I would think twice about Charisma..which has some very dominant orangey red..my guess would be that Charisma would be too dominant and wipe out all the aspects of "Tinkerbell" but give it a try, I'm anything but a breeding expert, I usually just use what I have at the moment too... Josh, I emailed Kathleen with the latest pictures and she is going to forward them as she did the others. Someone on her end and then someone on their end have been on vacation so she doesn't have any news yet.. but I'm confident she'll let me know when she hears something. She thinks..as do I..that this might be an unfinished product from mini breeding that got out by mistake (obviously) My Sophisticate is doing nothing..same coloration as "Tinkerbell" but the bud is only up about 1" and stuck...What do you think your Sophisticate might be? Does it have the chocolate/purple scape, leaves and bud like mine? When my two bulbs came, I took their picture and to me they look different..different shoulders and different necks..so I never even thought they might be the same..now they are looking the same..coloration wise anyway so I'm not so sure. Well, today the broccoli goes into the ground. Daughter and granddtrs were supposed to come yesterday to help me but I had a sore throat and told them not to come. Which means I'll have to plant them all myself. It's a week late, but they'll still make. And will plant some tomatoes as well and hope we don't get another hard freeze the third week of April like 07 and 09. I have extras if we do. The electric company brought the 5th load of chips today and dumped them inside the garden where we used to stockpile sawdust. Next year the asparagus will get a chip mulch instead of leaves. That means I will have leaf mold for mulch again. Glenda I've been looking for the blue azures as others in Ok have seen them, but so far none. Saw a black and a tiger Swallowtail though. And I have been disappointed with the Miracle Gro Potting soil too. One bag I bought had way too many big pieces and the next didn't seem to have enough nutrients. My seedlings turned pale green and I started watering with a weak fertilizer. In years past I made my own starting mix using sterilized soil, compost, sand, perlite, decomposed granite chips from a chicken house and leaf mold. It worked good but sterilizing soil stinks up the kitchen. Have used Jiffy Mix in the past but this year lacal WM didn't have it and I didn't want to drive to Tahlequah Lowe's or Atwoods for something else. Congrats on the mower Christie. That is on my wish list. Our old one has about given up. And I do want a zero turn as I have so many trees and odd shaped areas. Anybody recommend a good one. Well, daylight's burning, and my hot tea with lemon and honey has soothed the throat so I've got to get moving.

I have plant in the field in South Carolina, that do that, do not know why, but they are Rabbiteye & are loaded every year. Mine are fuller & rounder the yours, but mine are 10 years old too. I got my my bare root plant from an 38 year old orchard & some of his plants did not have leaves on the old wood. I do not see a problem with your plants, but this is the first year I have potted blue berry plant. I only have 20 in pots, most are in the field.

late fresh deliveries to BBStore are fine..

otherwise.. sounds like you were on target with planting.. etc ...

i dont know if you will need a few more months to decide if they will sprout or not ... a week or so should tell

if you have a warranty .. the issue is.. do it now quick ... perhaps a bit late for planting..

or wait until october.. no replanting in july/august .. eh??

Agreed. No planting trees in the summer. I've learned my lesson on that one. Even with a warranty, it's too much hassle hauling them out of the ground when they die. Spring and Fall planting only for me.

Yeah, I think it's too late already to plant another tree here in St. Louis, until Fall. It's not summer yet, and next week the weather will be amendable, but I won't risk it... There won't be enough cool/rainy weather to help the tree acclimate.
