Choices for my show entries - please vote

Since I haven't been growing my Dahlias to show, I'm stuck now with what is blooming to choose from for my entries. One of my favorites doesn't have an open bloom on it right now, which is disappointing...but...the choices for two of the four classes are easy:

Cactus Class: Tahiti Sunrise. I only have 2 blooming cactus styles and I've lots of bushes of Tahiti Sunrise so I'll have at least one really nice one on the show day.

Semi-Cactus: Cabana Banana. All of my other SC's aren't appropriately revolute, they look more like IDs. I've lots of good blooms on my Cabana Banana to choose from.

So there are two open classes, one with 3 blooms and another with 1.

I have seven varieties that have enough blooms for me to pick three from. Which of these would you choose?

For the single bloom open class I've got four more varieties to choose from, so eleven in all. Which would you pick?

I'm currently leaning towards entering Gladiator in the 3 bloom class, and Victoria Ann in the single bloom class.

Victoria Ann,Snowbound and Bodacious. Now I am giving you what I like and what my neighbors have pointed out to me in catalogues. Plantlady dose shows and has a flower shop. So she has a much greater knowledge of the show circuit. I also know that what wins in some areas do not have the same enjoyment else where. My area has a colonial past. Many trees here are over a hundred years old and came from the old country. This may reflect on our taste. Dose this confuse you enough?

Lol Viking...nope, I'm not confused...;-]

The judges for my show are going to judge >100 different hort categories, so who knows what they'll think is best. I just know I like them all, but can only take two...;-] Thanks for your help.

The best price I could find for mine is $205, with $3.95 shipping at YHS, so it is not crazy over budget. If this is a permanent choice, I'd try to make it the best I could. I know $100 seems like a lot (am strapped right now too), but it is one fixture and you should have it for many years. I look back at some of my choices and wish I had a re-do button. If we had to do it again, I'd definitely choose our fans. We started using 1 before the reno in our master and it still looks the same as the new ones. We get actual compliments, which as you can see by this thread, is a big deal since ceiling fans are not very "in" right now. I happen to love a well designed one and yet am not thrilled with the cheap looking ones. I think this one looks upscale without breaking the bank. Hello (I posted earlier on the Kitchen forum), for future information that others may want: I have the # 3 option, DIOED LED Refract Light Bar on a dimmer the company offers and I love it!. The name of their dimmer is Reign, & yes was expensive. I like the Refract Bar because it is over my sink and will be only modestly visible if I look up. I wanted the light to have a finished look and this one is nicely finished for my needs. I got the non-dimmable driver with my system. I am happy with my set up. I also have a separate dimmer for my under cabinet lights and used the Diode LED Cascade Light Bar for these locations, because they are water resistant and dimmable. I went with the warm light option on both styles.

redbazel: Actually the location makes for better TV viewing since there is no glare as can happen when the TV is on the wall opposite. If you look close there are something like 8 separate wire connections--DH said we could move the TV, but hte components would have to stay on that wall--which the only way I'd move the TV is if we could put the sofa on that wall. One nice thing about it the way it is, is we have a view of the backyard from the sofa. The valances will definitely be fuller as most likely I'll put 2 per window whereas when I taped them up, I only taped up a single one--so it's really more to see how the colors look than anything else. Yes, I do sew and have made valances before. In fact, I just made one for my DD's room and making them myself would be another option if I cannot find something off the shelf. I actually prefer the stripe myself. I would have to visualize how option 3 would look a little better in terms of the style of rod and how much I could clear from the window since it obstructs the light. It's hard to tell from my pics, but I already have 2" wood blinds on the windows and there is a view out my backyard. SO my vote would be either 2 or 3 and tonight I'll find out what DH thinks, though he also thought the sage plaid was a bit on the plain side and wanted something like the pillow pattern. sky: I don't think I could do as you desrcibe with the new console on the way since it will go against the wall and will extend under the windows for about 6" per side. That was why I was considering pulling them to the outer sides. I could still put 2 panels per side and just pull to the outer sides and that way they'd be fuller.

You need to read the little box that has the CARTSAVINGS coupon code where they mention it's not valid for Surya rugs. I called them up and they said the coupon is not valid for the three rug manufacturers: Surya, Shaw and Sphinx. I told him it was very misleading as the coupon did not list any exclusions and I had wasted my time choosing a rug, only to find it was not valid. So, looks like $492 is the best price, but no impetitus to rush order today--unless I can find a rug that is not one of those brands. auntjen: Hopefully your rug is by a different manufacturer and you can make use of the discount. Have you seen the rug that you are ordering IRL or did you just pick out over the internet?

If you want a complete novice's opinion (and by that I mean I've never even attended a Dahlia show), here goes: I like China Doll and Citron de Cap. But I also must add that I like Bride to Be simply because I'm growing it too and I love it.

I think Bodacious is dramatic and impressive, so that would be my vote for either the single or the triple arrangement. Love the colors on Victoria Ann; that would be good too. Your Citron du Cap looks perfect (to me) so that would get my vote of confidence as well. You're going to have to see what looks best to YOU and go for it!

Tahiti Sunrise is a good choice for the cactus slot, especially if you have lots of plants to get matching blooms. Lovely colors. Good luck, Russ.

Russ- Of the first batch-- Bodacious & Snowbound look like they have the best form & color with Bride to be & China Doll in runner-up position.

In the second batch your Victoria Ann has the best form & a really good bloom position. A 45 degree angle is preferred on all but the giants & ball dahlias- they can be top sitters & not lose points.
Papengo is an old variety that is a nice garden flower but doesn't win a lot at shows any more since it's quite flat.
If you have an Elijah Mason with a good center it's a possible as long as the varigation is uniform.
Just try to get fully double blooms that haven't blown their centers & stand up & look at the judges.
