Lookee what I got for Xmas!

Well, my present part of Christmas came late - long story. Anyway, I love it, they find me easy to buy for cause they get me things for the garden!!

These are the coolest!! I'm pretty sure I have woodburning kit out in the garage, somewhere!! I can pencil the names in and then burn. I should have put something in to give a size reference, but the stakes are slightly fatter that a pencil, and 16" to 18" high, and are tacked together with finishing nails, that have been ground flat!!! These will be so easy to make come Spring. Whaddya think??

Nancy, I love them. It sure looks better than metal shining in the garden or those awful mini blind shades that I use!

These should blend right in. What a great idea. It looks like they are shellacked....?

Julie, we brushed the slices with olive oil and just put them on the grill when we put the steaks on; they were done at the same time (about 10 - 12 minutes). If you are growing PattyPans, you have GOT to try them that way. Easy and fabulous; can't get any better than that!!! Edie

It is called "Veltheimia bracteata" and it is a bulb that grows and blooms in the winter and spring. During the summer it dies back and you don't water it. It has 2 flower stalks and the flowers are white and smell nice. It is from South Africa, I have about 3 different kinds of South African bulbs that I ordered from that one guy, whose name/website I cannot remember. Susie

With the 'too many plants syndrome' its inevitable that sooner or later I dry out and kill gesnerias. Too bad for me. Many people have had good luck with them and keep them going for years. They also propagate and can be self pollinated to grow on seedlings. One year, knowing my deficiencies I potted up a tiny cuneifolia in a deep six inch plastic pot--wa-a-ay overpotted. It was under lights and it did very well, growing into a little bushy thing, always in bloom. So, that's one way to grow them. Some growers with low humidity grow them in small pots enclosed under domes or in clear topped sweater boxes. They are often grown wicked. The whole genus is found only in the Caribbean, with quite a few species, mostly not in cultivation. They can be found on almost all the islands including many species from Cuba. Too bad they didn't make it to Florida so we could have a true continental US native gesneriad. Many of the species are really beautiful but some are largish shrubs with smallish flowers. But, many spectacular species remain out there waiting to be brought into cultivation. If anyone is curious to see what gesneriads come from which islands, the Smithsonian's gesneriad search engine works very nicely--just type in the island and up will come all the gesneriads known from there. So, for example in Cuba there are 23 gesneria species and a total of 37 species of gesneriads from all genera! In Cuba--who woulda guessed. Jamaica has 41 gesneriads (19 gesnerias). Puerto Rico only has 13 gesneriads of which 8 are gesnerias. And cuenifolia is found only on Puerto Rico--I was expecting I would see it native on more than one island. How about that. I would say that don't give up easily on that tree. I live in Zone 5a, Ottawa and keeping a perfect healthy red Cacao tree. Tons of huge leaves, it serves as my umbrella in my room, I usually sit under it. Yes, warm and humid, but in my experience, 40% humidity is fine with them. But you have to adapt it to it gradually. My trick is water them with rain water or snow water with very diluted fish emulsion fertilizer, they love it. I also repot mine into Coconut Husk Chips, it took off since then. They love sun, but not too strong, in winter an artifical light like 40W Fluorescent is enough to keep it happy. You have to act fast given the picture, the trick is to cover it with a big plastic bag on the canopy and spary lots of rain water or any light water and be patient. They lose leaves easily and will grow back. Good luck

Hmmmmm....I have a lot of old wood. I wonder what these things would fetch on eBay? That's a nice idea for people who prefer to remain natural.

They are not shellacked, gldno, but some kind of coating - spar varnish(?) that would take the weather might not be a bad idea. If you burn it it shouldn't need it - it should silver nicely. Also, it you are talented, you could carve by hand, or by dremmel!!

Lemon oil gives a nice water repellent finish on wood and bugs don't like it. Ants hate it.

Tung oil is good too if you can't find lemon oil. A lot of teak furniture is finished with one or the other.

I love how natural those will be in the garden. I always lose plant names and still have some white labels (very noticeable in winter) hanging around. That's such a wonderful idea that you've got with the wooden labels.

Yes, I think with wood-burning or carving, they will last a while. Better if they were native cedar or tamarack - these are a fine chinese wood!! lol. Glad that you like them - I think they are brilliant!!!
Token, what will you sell them for on eBay?? You could have several different styles: Rustic, like mine; all square and slightly modern; then you could do all crooky and funky...something for everyone! !!

I don't know Nancy, I was just thinking...I've got all these little logs from trees I took down this summer just sitting out there rotting. I could do different sizes too. It just made me think how simple and creative something like that is. And it wouldn't take a lot of effort either.

Anyone with a wood burning tool could easily write their own message, or I could personally engrave them, for an extra fee, of course. LOL

I used to have a set of leather stamps that I would heat with a pencil torch to sear leather. I wonder what I did with those things....

All my wood is still wet from the past few days of rain, but I'm going to bring some smaller pieces in this afternoon to dry out in the basement. I'll let you know how it turns out next week.
