Mountain Mandarin Festival 2009

Last Saturday we had absolutely beautiful weather for the 2009 Mountain Mandarin Festival!
The air was brisk, the sky was a clear, November blue, and the sun was warm...shorts and sweatshirt temperatures.

My friends and I met a little before eleven, and then entered the Fairgrounds to begin the circuit of sounds, scents, sampling, and sight-seeing! There was so much to see, and so much to report. In addition to the loop, there were two buildings full of crafts, such as soaps, jewelry, lotions, lights, wines, candies, olive oils, wood carvings, metal castings, kitchen apparati, and much, much more!

Outdoors, there were numerous games and such for the younger kids, along with demonstrations (chainsaw carving, for instance). In the middle of the Festival was the sound-stage, where a blue-grass band (reminiscent of O Brother Where Art Thou?) sludged through a few cover-songs from the movie...Man Of Constant Sorrow being the first. We took in the tunes during lunch - an Elk burger (I would have liked the Ostrich, too) for a friend and I, and sausages and Teriyaki chicken and roasted corn for my other, less adventurous friends. Oh, and tangerine juice to drink!

This year, I purchased Mandarin honey, several Mandarin jams (Blazing Mandarin with orange HabaÃ±ero peppers added), and bags of Mandarin fruit (I also stocked up on jams for Christmas presents). My Thanksgiving cranberries had fresh Mandarin, too...and were delicious!

I attended the Festival on Sunday, as well, but the weather had turned drizzly and grey. Since we (two other friends and I) were walking to the fairgrounds from a nearby apartment, I decided to leave my camera behind (in the interest of unfettered travel, should I be carrying anything on the return).

Thank you all and you are very welcome. I'm sure Paul will be reading this post with a smile in his face. He misses his USA customers too. I always order from RC up to their last month of shipment to USA as I need certain varieties to bloom during May, June, July. I rarely get problems with these bulbs as most of RC's bulbs are Dutch grown and were harvested later than the Hadeco bulbs. RC has bulb storage rooms with "the right" controlled temperature and humidity. Not like our refrigerators...lol! If I understood Paul right, he will be offering a "Spring Special". Hmmmmmmmm... I already have a list of bulbs ordered. I am not an expert in IDing but I will try. These are the ones I recognize and hope I'm right. Picture #1 ....Rosado/Santa Rosa/Rose - For me they are all the same. The official name used by the grower in their website is "Santa Rosa". Picture #4...Monaco Picture #5...Misty Picture #6...Jewel - white double the back Samba - Red round faced with white star Picture#7...Hercules - center Gervase - right front Picture #8...Temptation or Showmaster Remember that these are "Exhibit Quality" bulbs that's why their flowers are bigger and have brighter colors than the ones we have. RC's shipping schedule for USA will be like once a month, depending on how much is ordered. All the ordered bulbs (one lot) will get a phytosanitary permit and then brought to the USDA/APHIS in Holland to be inspected and then the bulbs will be individually boxed per order and shipped to the USA all together in one crate. This way, Paul wouldn't have to get a phyto permit for every order. The bulbs won't have to go through USDA inspection in the US port of entry anymore. For those of you who did not get the chance to order from RC in their last shipment last year, this was how RC's bulbs were packed. Every brown bag was sealed...

Must be lots of fun Sharon to wait anxiously to see a new seedling bloom for the first time! both are lovely:) This is kinda my "dog" $$ spending year, not a gardening year, so had only ordered 3 daylilies from Coral Kincaid (was so impressed last year with my order) two for grandaughters - Brooklyn Twist (which is so appropriate with her kinky/curly hair) and the closest I could come up with for Colby was Colburg's Frightwig (appropriate in a way, as her hair is REALLY curly/tossled) both Coral and I agreed, that Colby better have a good sense of humor, when she is old enough to know what her "namesake" daylily is:) both have bloomed and I am pleased with both. The third one I ordered was Radiation Biohazard - everyone's pics of this one, made me "just have to have it". The other daylily source I have ordered from in the past was Artemis Gardens and they sent huge/multiple fans - one of particular note is Kings Throne - just got it last year, but this year, it is sending many, many thick scapes up with 4 to 5 way branching, and the blooms are thick, heavy and large, very pleased with this one. (although I have a thing for the spiders) I was extremely disapointed with the order from Floral & Hardy (posted a pic on a different thread last year) just a few of my order made it, and although the prices were good, just too disapointed overall to try them again. It's my pleasure! I'd be out taking pictures regardless, but it sure is nice to have a place to share this hobby. Not many people know about the Mandarin Festival....it's a well-known secret, as they say! In a few years, no doubt, we'll be overrun by out-of-towners...and we'll lament the quiet olde days of the Mandarin Faire.
