Do you trust this advice from Swan Island

I purchased several tubers from SI this year and followed their instructions for container planting, namely, to mix two parts garden soil with one part potting mix. I know for many plants garden soil is a no-no because it retains too much moisture. In any case, my fire magic is nearly bare of foliage, neon splendor, while blooming (disappointingly), has lost it's share of leaves, and Thomas Edison, late to come up, is yellowing some. I really don't know what I'm dealing with here....an aggressive fungus, too much rain. Plus, I feel uncertain as to when to water. At this point, though the surface is dry, the pot with a depth of 12" is still damp/moist about 4" down. I've grown one dahlia, Seattle, in a pot using just potting mix. I don't know if I was lucky or it's really easy, but its performance was absolutely terrific (from Walmart).

I'd be happy to post pics, but any initial reaction to this potting recipe? I've posted a question on container recipes before but the one response I got was much to complicated for a simpleton like me....about five or six different components mixed in separate stages with some of the ingredients overlapping....I just couldn't find some of the stuff or follow the directions.

Growing full sized dahlias in pots is challenging in most locations. I believe that pots stay too warm in most climates. There are advantages in using all potting soil rather than mixing in some garden soil. The biggest issue is pathogens in your garden soil. Also, what type of soil you have is an issue. I know of a dahlia grower that has sandy clay soil and it makes excellent potting soil without any additions. When I grew some dahlias in 10 gallon pots, I used all potting soil. I also planted a rooted cutting that was about 12 inches tall in the pots. The plants grew very well and had 2 blooms, then 4. After the four blooms they did not do well. The variety was Cornel, the red ball dahlia. I no longer grow dahlias in pots except for my pot tubers that are in 4 inch pots.

I tried growing three plants in large pots this year, and am about to put them in the ground because the flowers have shrunk. It is just too hot. Flowers grown in smaller pots were fine last year but only because of the cold and rain.

See the drying post about two posts down. Most of that will apply. Don't drill holes til gourd is completely dry, or it will rot. It has to feel like balsa wood. It can take a few weeks to a few months. Has to dry from inside out, so some take longer than others. Freezing will not hurt it, but I have read that the seeds will not be viable for planting it they freeze before drying. The nice pretty green skin will turn to a horrible scummy mouldy appearence. This is a normal part of the drying process. As long as your gourd is solid and not thin shelled, it will turn out OK and will eventually dry completely. Good luck.

green design: Thank you for taking the time to put those color swatches together it helps so much to have a visual reference. I never thought of going with browns but it does look very pretty together. I love the brown sink. Love it. I lean more toward the brown shade than the greens I think. Where are those round tiles from and how did you kick all this out so quickly? Wow. herbflavor: I am drawn towards light countertops...or really dark countertops. See how I work? My favorites are natural soapstone (but the price for that in Idaho is through the roof and with 4 kids I think the chipping would kill me) and the white shades of caesar/silestone. ellendi: I'm going to try and figure out including photos today but I have my doubts...I can't even figure out how to find my own posts. Thank you for the suggestion to look at the finished kitchen blog..I'll go there next and it will be new to me. livewire: Love the paint swatch you included, so warm. We are replacing the island because the current one is too small and I have been jealously watching my friend pull out her giant, perfectly organized, full extension, soft close ikea drawers for far too long...only to reurn to my dark cavernous holes that require getting on my knees to access. In a perfect world I would make a copy cat kitchen of so many I see here. I would paint all my cabinets a light creamy color, put a marble look a like silestone (or the real stuff) on the perimeter and my walnut in the middle and every cabinet would be fitted with a pull out. And I would have a cleaning lady. As long as I'm dreaming. I'm afraid that I would face chipping on the paint with our busy kitchen. It just seems risky. Everyone: I made a mistake, the cabs are alder, not maple. Similar though but with age the finish has yellowed a bit to make them kind of a light honey color.

Secondary bacterial infections are a very common sequela to inflammation of any body system. If Kitty's GI tract was inflamed for any reason, such as food allergy, that makes it much easier for bacteria to overgrow and cause problems. Most animals (including people) have Campylobacter in their GI tract, and it does not cause any problems. Inflammation causes changes on the surface of the affected body system making it easier for it to be colonized by opportunistic invaders, such as Campylobacter. Once the invader is colonized it can reproduce and the numbers get out of control, causing clinical signs. Don't worry about the campylobacter too much- it was probably always there and probably is still there just not in detectable or problematic numbers. There are lots of reasons that kitty's GI tract could have been inflamed, allowing the campylobacter overgrowth. Food allergies, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, parasites, dietary indiscretion (eating something she shouldn't have), stress, and medications especially antibiotics (not so much metronidazole, but the penicillin derivatives are notorious) among other things. Although not having an overgrowth of campylobacter is good, not having ANY GI flora is bad. All animals need GI bacteria to help digestion. I hope they meant that she doesn't have any more bacterial overgrowth, not that she doesn't have any bacteria. I agree that this isn't a recurring problem. She didn't have a bacterial infection in September. And she's had diarrhea since December, which is a continuing problem, not a recurring one. The only thing recurring is you having to take her to the vets. Is kitty spayed already? If not, it may be a good opportunity to get her spayed, do an abdominal exploratory, and take some intestinal biopsies while they have her under anesthesia and are in the abdomen anyway. It may help figure out what is going on, and even though I think a tumor is highly unlikely, that would be a good way to both look and remove it. If she is spayed, might consider doing an exploratory anyway. It sounds like you are getting more and more worried, as anyone who cares as much about their kitten would be, and it may be worth it just to go whole-hog and find out once and for all what is going on. Sometimes it's worth just going in instead of playing around with treatments and tests forever. If you didn't want to do exploratory surgery, then I would definitely deworm. Then try canned pumpkin on the food in case of fiber-responsive diarrhea. If that doesn't work, then try the elimination diet, which would help food allergies. If that doesn't work, maybe try tylosin in case it's antibiotic-responsive diarrhea. If that doesn't work, try some low dose steroids to control inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome. There's still plenty of trial and error treatments to try... Gaining weight is a good thing. When animals have chronic diarrhea, we usually worry about them losing weight. It's also good that she has an excellent appetite. You are right to worry about your kitten. If the vets are not as concerned about her as you are, that is a SURE reason to not trust them. After all, if they don't care, why are they vets?

Would you trust a builder to create a blueprint from your own sketch?

After reading many of these recent comments, meandering here and there as extended threads almost always seem to do, I had to go back to the OP to see what in the world started this thread. It was: "...do you think solely working with a builder would suffice?...I feel like I would be telling an architect exactly what to do as far as design. But I can see where we might need a draftsman to translate our design into a blueprint? Or can the builder fill the role of a draftsman?" It's really the old, often repeated question, "do I really need or have to use an architect, or can I just I just build using my own sketch, which someone translates into dimensioned drawings?..." And the answer, in most U.S. jurisdictions, is yes you can build from your own sketch, assuming you can get design review approval (if required) and a building permit. You may even be able to get financing from your own sketch, or at least from dimensioned drawings of your sketch--depending on the lender and the loan sum to value. And one can usually find an experienced builder who will work with an owner's sketch, and offer to build from it using some sort of construction contract (favorable to the builder's risk, more often than not). There are a number of jurisdictions in the U.S. which do require architectural drawings (by a licensed architect) for design review and/or building permit, particularly for homes over a certain area or storeys, in certain site/soil conditions, or in areas designated for special historical or architectural control, but these are nowhere near the majority of jurisdictions. But at the end of the day, the answer, like so many answers, is really: it depends. It depends on answers to questions like: --Does the site and jurisdiction where you wish to build require documents and calculations from a licensed professional; --Is your budget so limited and critical that a 6%-10% architectural fee is simply impossible; is an initial design consultation of $1K +/- out of the question; --Do you see your house as primarily shelter from the elements and you have no other strong concerns or desires about it; --Do you or anyone in your family have special needs; --Are you a rugged and experienced DIY person who gets personal reward from doing everything yourself; have you ever designed and built a house before; --How concerned are you about a fixed or manageable construction budget, and the level/type of construction expertise and features you will actually receive for your project? There are other important and useful questions, but hopefully the point is clear: using your own sketches for construction of a home depends on the answers to these and other important questions. And since no two of us are alike or in the same circumstances, the answer to using one's own sketch for building is, wait for it...it depends. And like all decisions, there will be a series of consequences which occur based on the decision that each of us may make in this type of situation. PS: And I guess I have to say that CAD, the computer and all of our disruptive technology neither pose any important questions in a situation like this, nor do they provide any particularly useful answers. They are simply a tool, a means to an end, and certainly not the end.

I agree with Teddahlia. If the roots get too hot there is a problem. Hence one can either double pot or use very large styrofoam pots.

Interesting feedback. I never thought of heat. So what about plants marketed as "container dahlias"? Are these more likely to be successful because of heat tolerance or do they get that name solely based on size?

And I'm using Miracle Gro garden soil. I don't know if they cook the soil to remove pathogens or what.

Yes, smaller plants have smaller root systems. It may be a function of both heat and water with larger varieties in pots. They require an awful lot of water in a pot. Probably because warmer soil allows more evaporation. A partially buried pot seems to work really well; even smaller pots can be used.

I got a Neon Splendor from SI this year, it is in a clay pot and is spectacular!

I also bought Fire Magic (though they apparently delivered Dark Magic instead), it is in the ground and growing slowly, albeit with 2-3 beautiful blooms so far.

I have found advice from SI to be right on. They admit (as do most growers) that it is harder to grow dahlias in containers than the ground and I have found that to be true as well. One of my PAST mistakes though was underwatering. I had read so much about not watering dahlias after planting and having lost several that rotted anyway, that I held water back sparingly. I re-read their catalog this summer and it actually says you can't overwater dahlias (I'd heard that about roses years ago) once they start sprouting and blooming. So now I soak mine to the bottom every 3-4 days instead of the light 'washing' I used to give them every 2 days and they are loving it!

As for what soil I used in the containers? Lord only knows. Parts potting soil, part planting mix and part sand (I live in the dunes of S.F). The sand keeps them draining easily, the potting mix seems to be light enough for them to push through and the planting mix seems to keep it all together.

But other containers of mine are ALL planting mix or all planting soil (exactly what you are NOT supposed to put in pots) and they all are ablaze in blooms this year! In my opinion, the soil won't matter much once you start feeding them the right stuff (little to no nitrogen) and include blooming fertilizer that strengthens the stems and allows for blooms to do their thing!
