Here's a couple of more photos of moss and...the same spot where the wild flowers were growing.

Don't know which ones they are but they sure are purty :).

Okay, to get lichen to grow you get what's called lichen powder- it's a nutritional supplement. Lichen is a combination of a fungus, an algae, and something else. So you'll probably want to mix the lichen powder with spirulina which is also a nutritional supplement- it's like pond scum or algae. Mix them and paint them onto your invention thing. Moss grows from spores and you can get spores from a bonsai supply place but I couldn't get them to grow.

Sorry folks but the plant you have is a moss. It looks like a species of Tortula but there are also other genera of moss that are similar in appearance. Check out this link to an image of what I am seeing this as possibly similar to. Fern prothallia and young sporophytes look much different. Check out the link below for more info on those. The differing opinions above prompted me to conduct my own research. A fungus, an alga, and sometimes cyanobacteria living symbiotically are referred to as lichen. Whether their symbiosis is mutualism or parasitism in its nature is a matter of debate, since the relationship is fairly complex and not yet fully known. As I understand, the relationship is the following (in a very simplified way): the fungus, through its thallus structure and through release of certain beneficial fungi chemicals, provides its photobionts (alga and cyanobacteria) with optimal living conditions. Additionally, fungus absorbs minerals (mainly carbon and nitrogen) from the air and water, and makes them available to its photobionts. In exchange, alga converts carbon to simple sugars which the fungus feeds on, while cyanobacteria provides the fungus with nitrogen, converted to a form the fungus can actually use. Many view the above relationship as mutualism; others argue it’s parasitism, because the fungus consumes more than half the sugars produced by the alga, sugars which the alga also needs for itself. Whatever the case may be regarding the nature of the symbiotic relationship between the lichen-forming organisms, I think it’s generally agreed upon the fact that the lichen does not parasitize the substrate it lives on; so it won’t harm a tree or other thing it attaches itself to, because it doesn’t feed on that substrate. My question was whether or not anyone could tell me if it’s a moss or a lichen, and perhaps even identify it by its name. However, I’m glad the discussion took this turn, because I’ve now gained a great deal of appreciation for lichens. Still, if anyone happens to know the name of this particular lichen, please let me know. Thanks everyone.

Those are so pretty. I try and try to get those kinds of plants to grow here- but they just don't dig the sunshine!

OMG!!

Those are just beautiful.

Those plants are even more endangered than wildflowers.
They look like they are hanging off of rocky cliffs. Are they? They grew like that back home (and I do mean "grew").

I love those plants. GORGEOUS!!!!

Lucky you to still be able to find them in the wild where you live.

Those are great~~~~~~~~~~love the liverworts,had never heard of them so had to look them up to see which ones they were.

I think the little greenish cupped one and the one with the red bits are Pixie Cups (Cladonia) but would need an expert on lichens to confirm. I'm going back in a couple of weeks, see what else I can find.

I believe the red topped green Lichens are called "British Soldiers" (Cladonia cristatella).

The ones in the photo above it are definitely Pixie Cups (Cladonia pyxidata) - all gray green - gray when dried out. They look like tiny metal stemmed goblets.

We have Lichens here, but I've never seen anything like those. I love Lichens. They are such fascinating things. Fungus and algae living together to create so many different colors and forms. Amazing!

Annie thanks for the identifications I thought the red ones were "British Soldiers" too but I couldn't find this in my book, when I did a search I found... "British Soldiers" seem to be more an east coast lichen. I found "Cladonia coccifera" red pixie cup but my red one doesn't have the same cups as the greenish one, what do you think?
OMG, I feel another addiction coming on, with all the rain we've been having this year there's probably a lot more of nature's beauties out there just waiting to be photographed.
My cottage garden is a disaster this year from all the rain we've had, rose bud rotting before they even open, plants flopping over, spit bug on everything, mildew and aphids, I didn't know there were so many aphids. I refuse to spray so will be cutting everything back, the sun comes out and promises to stay for awhile but something keeps chasing it away. It'll probably turn dry and hot in July and fry all the too lush growth. Oh well, there's always next year :).

In the meantime I will enjoy everyone else's gorgeous gardens.

Very different plants. I love mosses. The only moss I have luck with is some that grows on some old bricks I have in the garden. I do like it though.
