Please Help) What can I put in front of these windows?

Since I now have many succulents and cacti, I was wondering if there is anything that I could put in front of these windows that do NOT require sun light that much?

These windows face the North and East and West and are pretty bare. I would really appreciate your suggestions.

This one faces the West

South obstructed by trees all winter.

East windows

A North windows. So much window and yet I think not enough light for the plants we like here.

Mike, the house and windows look great!
Big fan of stainless steel sinks, also.... ;-)

On the north, you could arrange some of your Sanseveria plants, which will tolerate lower light conditions.
The only problem is that the Sans. can be fairly tall, which could block the light to the other plants!
You might be able to tuck some Haworthias in there, too, although I must warn you that I really don't know
much about Northeastern growing.

I have Rhipsalis, epiphyllums, and some Sans. in my east and west windows. Begonias and misc. gesneriads in the north. Hope that helps.

Maybe I should have started a new thread for the "After" photos to make this easier. oh well :) loribee, gsciencechick, msrose: thank you! If others have further advice, I'm all ears. I said no to a rug, but I'm keeping my eyes open if one (that looks easily cleanable) really wants to come home with me. msrose: the floor is a pre-finished, handscraped hickory. With two big dogs, "rustic" was the only direction we were comfortable going with hardwood floors. The floors are from a small company called, "Lewis & Clark." (I think it's only available regionally.) Yes, the floor IS dark enough to show dust in direct lighting (same with my black countertop... I can't tell it is dusty until the sun is setting and the light hits it just right.) The floors show wet paw prints, when they dry, in any lighting! We have a patio cover that eliminates a lot of the direct lighting in our great room, so I rarely can see the floors are dusty. I would use lighter floors if the rooms had direct lighting all day!

Bus driver, I found your story and your statements about codes to be very profound. Also, worthy, I too grew up in Ohio and remember some family friends living in their basement for two years while they built their home on top. This was back in the 50ties. It is interesting how various codes have developed over the years. I know in the electrical business that many people want their work done to code but then balk about having a permit pulled. Then we deal with issues related to building codes dealing with the placement and wiring of smoke alarms. You are supposed to get a permit to erect a small storage shed in your back yard. I didn't. The homw in which I was reared was in a township in Ohio in which we had a water well and a septic system. Eventually, the township dug their own wells and ran water pipes through the area along the back of properties. From the back of our house to the water system piping was 150ft. One summer my Dad and I dug a trench from the back of our house to the water line that ran from 6ft. to 8ft. deep. We dug the trench by hand. Couldn't really afford to hire a backhoe. That was 1956. The township ran the water line from their system to the house and tied into our plumbing. Permits? Don't think so.

natal, that's a beautiful chair! I think that's along the lines of what I need. Something that's not over stuffed, and huge. gray, we tried the bench idea after we took the tree down this yr. And it left the space kind of empty. Or, maybe it was just so different and I didn't leave it there long enough to adjust? I'm really trying for some additional seating, though. As it is, my mother is griping if we take away the recliner, my dad will have no where to sit when he comes over. He's the ONLY one who uses it. Dh and I never sit in it, nor do the kids. We all sit on the couches. Les, the couch is too long and cuts the room off too much to swith them. When I put them together at Christmas, I have them meet at the arms, with the table there with them. Along with lining it up with the column in the living room. But, once we switch the loveseat, and move the couch down..it really does open that window up even more. I really don't see it being too hard to get two chairs in that space. Pier 1 has some cute wicker chairs on sale. Is that cheesey, to have inside?

Maybe what I say is miss info, Mater of Fact just rename me Miss. Info. I put cactus in my north window since that is what I have. They don't grow in the winter so I think I am safe. TRUE , my winter is not as long as yours and they are right back outside very quickly. I have heard of some storing cactus in a dark garage during their dormant period.My epi is back away from any window on a high shelf , but they get light falling some of the day from a tall north east clearstory. They do not grow in the winter either. I am very careful about watering them in the dark. Now that is the kiss of death.
