My Back Yard Today

After looking at the other back yards, it makes me feel like mine is pretty lame, but our yard is small, and mostly for Heidi. Larry didn't even want me to put the plants in that I did, but he likes it now. That's how it's been with each new bed I start. He's now offering me more space in the front yard, in an area the grass isn't growing well.

Sue, I don't think your backyard is lame. I think it looks like you guys use it a lot, and that it is what you need it to be. Looks pretty comfortable!

I'd say it's Paper Mulberry (Broussonetia papyrifera) which is an out of control weed that plagues most all of Florida in much the same way that the White Mulberry (Morus alba) plagues most of the Eastern US. One way to tell for sure, is if it's fuzzy on the top of the leaf and more rough feeling on the bottom of the leaf it's Paper Mulberry. White Mulberry will be mostly smooth feeling on the top and rough feeling on the bottom of the leaf.

We have 2 pairs of brown thrashers in our yard this year. I love them. They have the most hilarious song, it is like they are going through a big list of song clips from other birds, rapid-fire, one after another. Some mornings and evenings they just don't shut up. :D I think they are good birds..they eat lots of bugs. Haven't had any swoop at us yet and I'm sure we walk fairly close to their nest at times!

Help! Rear wheel on new reel mower won't turn.

Yesterday, I bought a StaySharp Max reel mower by Fiskars from Lowe's. It's my first reel mower, but I really enjoyed using it to mow my back yard today. I read the manual, and I followed the instructions carefully. But while mowing the front, I hit a bump, and now the rear axle won't turn at all. It feels like a brake was engaged. The rear wheels will turn backward (independently of the axle). I don't see any obstructions or mechanical problems anywhere—I even took off the drive system cover and inspected the chain and sprockets. I called Fiskars's customer help line, but they aren't open until Monday. Any ideas on how I might troubleshoot this? When it worked, I liked using it. But if my grass gets any taller, I'll have to borrow a combustion mower to cut it.

Sue I enjoyed visiting your blog.

That was the first picture I had seen of the front yard; all I had seen before was the beds up near the house....the one on your blog today showed it in perspective. I love the curving lines that follow the curve of the street!

I have a dog that makes my gardening life more complicated too, but can't contain him so he does what he does.

Liked the pictures of the deck and all the potted things...which I don't do. I always forget to water.
You have lots of unique and interesting containers.

Where were you when they were asking about lath houses. Yours is so nice and offers you good shade for plants and people alike.

Woo, Sue, you've come a long way in a short time. Your back yard isn't lame, it's useful and practical. Cooking out, dining, pet, growing edibles, storage -- all in a compact space.

My MIL spent lots of energy planting euonymous to disguise the cattle pens, and making beds of red verbena in front of the old tractor shed. Her efforts just called attention to what she was trying to hide. I don't attempt to beautify or hide anything in the backyard, I just plant in the sight lines between the front and what I'm hiding.

I was just thinking the other day it has been a long time since we have heard from Sue...glad to hear from you again!!
Nice blog too. My favorite pic is the one with the potted herbs. I have been trying to add more herbs too, and find containers are really great for them. I noticed you have a rosemary. Do you replant every year or have you found one can overwinter them indoors?

I LOVE your place...all of it! It is folksy and I love folksy. My kind of place.
Love the herbs in the pots...well, I love it all.
Beautiful and cottagey!

The tractor seat is very clever and creative.
Nothing lame about any of it.

I don't have any garden in my front yard. That is the dogs area. There are trees and flowering shrubs and grass, but no flowers. My garden is all out back. I love to see the faces of visitors when they walk around to the back. :)
