5 legs, green Head, goldish Body...what is it and what can i do?

Hey Folks

Well my subject says it all. I've got these 1/8"-1/4" creatures on my flowers. I don't imagine that they're good insects but i guess they could be...assuming that they are bad news what can i do?

Feedback would be great!

The creature described does not fit the description of any insect. ... only 6 legs for insects, and 8 legs for spiders. Sooo .... without a picture, it is almost impossible to figure out what it might be.

I think my insect may have 6 legs. I wasn't sure when i was checking him out.

Anyway, i'll try to get a picture of my ugly bug.

Drip watering systems seem to work well with that many Thuja 'Green Giants.' That is, if you monitor the drip system enough to ensure the trees receive enough consistant water, but also that the soil at no times becomes soggy. When I first plant my trees, they let me know if they are not getting enough water by first turning tan. If I begin to to keep them better watered at that stage, they are much easier to correct. Do not let any big dogs urinate on your trees. If that happens, it does not take long for the branches to turn the color you described. In the winter, if the trees receive a south and southwest exposure, of drying sun and winds, they may turn a brownish burgundy color, and not green back up until they begin growing better in the following Spring. These trees are also hit hard when they are planted in slow draining soil, like clay, and there has not been anything done for them to drain off the excessive water in the soil. When this happens I have seen the leaves turn goldish brownish at the start, but then turn completely brown. The cause of this problem, often occurs when their fairly fine textured roots have become unhealty due to too much water in the soil suffocating them. If left in that state, long enough they will die, or if a sudden day or two of dry soil event follows their previously begun suffocating roots condition; they will not be able to compensate, and these trees usually die. Especially before these trees establish and when they are only 6 feet tall or less, if rain runoff which collects and puddles a little over their rootballs occurs, that will signifcantly stress them at first exposure, and even kill the trees in a very short time if the situation reoccurs several times within a period of few months.

How is your scotch heather doing MO_Girl? I've only tried that one once and it died in mid summer for me so I assumed it didn't like the heat but maybe it was something else. You asked if sedum was easy to grow - very easy! It's wonderfully heat and drought tolerant. It's not evergreen but the dried flowers will remain for awhile and give you some winter interest. Autumn Joy is easy to find and grows quickly. If you need evergreen perennials for shade, heuchera and helleborus are two of my favorites. Helleborus is tricky to winter sow though. Heuchera - I got no seedlings the first time I winter sowed it and way too many the last time. For sun - dianthus is a nice front-of-border plant. I'm still experimenting with which ones do best here, but so far the green leafed varieties don't come back for me. The ones I've had with gray leaves do better and I like them better anyway. That would be a easy one to winter sow. I had good luck with candytuft seeds as well. I don't think common yucca will take over your yard. It's just very difficult to kill, maybe impossible. Plant it where you want to keep it for the rest of your life. I planted one too close to an outdoor water faucet and get stabbed every time I turn the water off and on. I have never gotten any volunteer seedlings though. I don't think it's the same one Vera mentioned. I don't get runners out away from the plant, just one big 3-4 foot clump.

I had that exact pink and brown tile in my last house. I must have tried 10 different decorating schemes in there; the pink is hard to coordinate with. I ended up replacing the vanity and used plain white 4x4 tile on it. That looked okay, and might look okay over your shower surround. A little awkward, but okay. I could also envision just using some sheet formica up there, well caulked; if you want to do something cool, get "boomerang" or some other 50s-inspired pattern and play up the kitsch factor. I discovered that it was going to be a big challenge to replace the bath/shower fixtures (mine were brass, very corroded - ick!). It sounded like I would have to rip out tile to get to the valve and plumbing inner workings, as you can't just pop on new handles and tub spouts very easily. But you can replace the shower head relatively easily. As far as figuring out whether it's structurally sound, I guess I'd go into the crawl space and try to inspect the floor under the tub and toilet. Poke at the wood with a screw driver and see what happens. If you replace your toilet, you'll have a chance to see if any horrors lie underneath - in mine, the subfloor was not in great shape (thanks to a previous owner who liked carpet in her bathrooms :) If you don't see rot, I would guess your bathroom will last a long time. I've read in the New York Times that tile from the 50s was made really strong. (I'm attaching a fun link you've probably already visited, but just in case...) laughable, you'll fit 3 comfortably and 4 very very tightly as everyone's said. The chokepoint is the seat by the sink run. I agree with everyone else that 42" range/island aisle would give you some much needed room at the chokepoint. I did read what you said about trying it above, but just wanted to add one thought which is if you just tried it briefly it would naturally feel tight because it's not what you're used to. If your current island is moveable I really think it would be a worthwhile experiment to try it at 42" for a full week and reevaluate at the end of that time. I say that from experience, but the other way around. Pre-reno my aisle width was 36" which was perfect for me. I was totally used to working in it, but when we reno'd we put a range opposite a dishwasher drawer and I wanted to be able to open both fully so in the reno we budged our island back 6". Well when I first started working there post-reno it felt like bizarro world, a canyon-distance away, and I was rather regretting the change. Of course after a while it became quite natural and now I laugh to think that I was ever even remotely ruing the change. All that to say it might (?) be the same for you but in reverse. Just a thought ... feel free to ignore if you like. :-)

Today I saw tiny little green bugs on the back of the dahlias. They run when I try to catch them. They are so small I don't know how they could see me? Size of a pin head and all green.

Doesn't sound like my bugs. Are they on the flowers or the foliage? It appears that my bugs are eating the flowers...making tiny holes.

Hello,

It sounds like you may have leafhoppers. I've been having a problem with these little green buggers too. I just sprayed mine today with some random insecticide that my father-in-law brought over and I don't know if it was for them but it killed them. Many of my dahlias have severely stunted growth and I don't know if they will recover. I'm hopeful though.

Mine are on the foliage. I also have grasshoppers. I catch them and put them in the pool for the birds. I am going to spray today even though it is supposed to rain all week.
My dahlias are also not going to be 4 or 5 feet tall. They are bushy and about 2 to 3 feet? I am thankful for anything.

I did a little research and the critter is
The Japanese Beetle!
Ugly little bugger but fairly easy to pick off if done diligently.

one more thing...what i did was check the bug description on the bug site (link in previous post)and then googled it for the picture

I had them just eating my dahlias up. Sprayed with Sevin and haven't seen them on my dahlias in over a week. Spray Sevin at dusk to minimize poisoning the bees.
Insecticidal soap won't work cause they are hard (really hard) bodied insects.
Hate these lil buggers!

i did the same. haven't seen them for a bit. gonna spray again in a couple of weeks. also sprayed late in the day to protect the bees. hate those little buggers too!
