Vignette just inside double garden gate

I love that word vignette....I have to think in those terms because some of my long shots aren't the best combinations. I do too much sticking stuff in the first bare spot I can find!

Anyhow, I thought this one worked out pretty well. I think that will be a yellow heirloom iris in the back.

I find it quite remarkable that I'm responding to this question, Catherinet. I don't need any checking of authoritative sources to be sure that I don't lead anyone astray. Just my experience and a desire to help . . . Here is my experience with 2 simple gates: One was essentially 4 "panels" since they amounted to a simple movable enclosure to keep the backyard hens in 1 area or another of the lawn. I used 1/2" pvc pipe, 4 elbows, chicken wire & cable ties -- hated those panels! The chicken wire soon sagged, bagged and snagged on my clothing and, at unexpected moments, on my bare skin! (Those panels have been replaced by movable picket fence panels.) The other was an actual gate that was part of a garden fence. I had 2 "allotments" in a community garden - about 15 years ago now. I doubled the gate posts -- so, instead of having 2 posts, I had 4 set closely together so that the gate slid down from the top and was held in place - no hinge. The larger gate posts were part of the fence. The 2 posts behind them were just there to hold the gate and they did a good enuf job to keep dogs and squirrels out, remarkably enuf. Oddly, they were too much for most visitors to figure out. When I invited someone into my gardens, he or she always had to be helped with the gate. It only required lifting to remove it from the opening - and then had to be set aside, leaning usually against the fence. A few 1by2's with chicken netting tacked securely to them. Throw those babies (seeds) out the door where you want them to grow. I have had mine since the first year that I joined gardenweb. The first year, I ws them and from then on I have been pulling up tons of sprouts every spring. I have potted them up for swaps, sent seeds to anyone who asked and they have all grown for them. PVick, this is your year...keep em moist! cAROl and Tomva can attest to that! I have to say that mine are planted in a very wet area even though they say thay like it dry. They were over seven feet tall last year! I still have some seeds, anyone? Lisa

Wreath on the garden gate

Thank you lily, I hope no one tires of seeing my "wreath on the garden gate" pics. Yes, I love the birds too and just came in from filling the feeder on the edge of the field. Usually put a corn mix in that one to lure the sparrows and starlings away from the upper feeders right outside the kitchen window. Money's a little tight this payday so I'm not sure I'll be able to fill those up with the good seed mix I buy especially for them. But I always say that and end up scrapping enough coins together to go buy that bag! Just can't resist those birds staring in the window at me. The name "Atticus" comes to mind for your mockingbird only because of the movie "To Kill a Mockingbird" with Gregory Peck. Not a very nice reference but I always liked that movie.

Patty, That is probably true, but I know that some of them come in the gate because they will even do it when I am in the garden! LOL In fact, one will come in through the gate and look anxiously around, and then another and then another, like the first one is the lookout for the others. I walk a really fine line between trying to feed them enough that they survive the winters (and also VERY harsh drought conditions like we had here in 2005) and, yet, keeping them out of the garden, which they obviously believe is theirs as much as it is ours. We live in an area with abundant wildlife and have had every critter you can imagine from coyotes and bobcats to ring-tailed cats, tons of venomous and non-venomous snakes, possums, armadillos, gazillions of raccoons, etc. If my garden wasn't fenced, we'd have no garden! This year's deer problems have been the worst, which is why we expanded the fence to 7' tall a couple of weeks ago. It IS basically working, but if I do stupid things like leaving it open, the critters will find the open gate and come in. Sometimes, early in the morning, the turtles are standing AT the gate, waiting for me to come and open it. (Around here, every day is like being either at the circus or the zoo, but it is never dull.) I let the turtles roam around the garden because they can't do much damage other than maybe chewing on a tomato or two that is low to the ground. The turtles "reward" me by digging shallow depressions in my flower beds and laying their eggs there. Thus, we get to enjoy seeing their babies hatch and make their way to the pond. (They never lay eggs in the veggie garden though.) What I really want to know is WHY the deer come up to the house and look into the windows! Are they looking to see if we are home? If they see we are gone, do they say "the coast is clear!" and start eating the shrubs? Are they thinking of breaking in and raiding the kitchen pantry? Living surrounded by wildlife is very interesting to say the least. Oh, and there ARE easy explanations for why the deer population is worse. To our west, Lattimore Sand and Materials has been clearing several hundred acres they bought alongside the Red River to mine sand. That clearing has sent tons of wildlife onto the properties of those of us who live here close to the river. And, several miles to our south, to the south of Thackerville, the WinStar Casino and surrounding development are driving wildlife out of that area and towards us. So, the wild things have to go "somewhere", don't they? Since we have food and abundant water (3 ponds, a creek, a swamp, and several springs), they like it here. I wouldn't mind having them here if I could train them to eat the ragweed and Johnson Grass! Dawn

Just goes to show how different textures and complimenting colors make the loveliest statement in a garden - er, vignette. :)

I love the purple iris with the white spot- it's a perfect companion to your white irises and clematis.

FYI, the white iris is Immortality ( reblooms for me)the spotted one is Suky also a rebloomer. The clematis is H.F. Young to the left is just regular garden sage. There will be a small lavender Munstead right by the gate post later on.

That is what my Clematis looks like. I bought it at Wally World....no name, just labeled "Clematis". Now I know what she be.

That is quite the picture. Gorgeous! (I know I use that word a lot, but what else can I say about beautiful flowers in beautiful gardens?)

I have Immortality too. Isn't she the most fragrant Iris of all? Oh, a yellow iris in the back will be eye popping. I love those color combinations with the white to add contrast with the dark blue violets and greens.

The Bronze Fennel and blooming Garden Sage tucked in there are perfect companions with their finer textures and colors. Lovely, Lovely.

You did it girl! Beautiful Vignette, I reckon!

What a sweet, old-fashioned lovely vignette. Like Annie, I noticed the bronze fennel too. I need to get some seeds of that again, as it is so pretty, smells wonderful and the butterflies/caterpillars love it. You have some really wonderful bloomers there at the farm. It is always a treat to see your different gardens.

I took another picture after the yellow iris opened. BTW, I have bronze fennel coming up by the gadzillions right around that area and there is some just east of that in front of some daylilies and there is one in the cistern planter by the back door....you get the idea. THEY SELF-SEED!

I think the sage is more showy now too. The baptisia isn't fully opened yet.

That's a perfect illustration of why I like 'monochrome' plantings in the garden - see how beautifully things cascade from the clematis, through the irises to the small blue flowers (which are what..)? An inspired planting!

Woody, the small blue is just plain old garden sage that we used for seasoning. I let it bloom before cutting it back because I like it. Just out of sight is a tall spikey blue, baptisia pendula.

Baptisia sounds perfect to continue the flow. I have a big patch of ordinary sage for the flowers too - I didn't recognize it though without seeing the foliage :-)

Have you considered moving that very nice yellow iris and replacing it with something dark? I think something dark (not sure what.. ) would provide more contrast and highlight the purple-blues better. The yellow has about the same 'value' as the blues so is less of a contrast. (Try looking at the picture in black and white - the yellow is likely pretty much the same shade of gray as the clematis I think.)
