I had that problem last year. There were handfulls of roly polies all over my beds and they were eating my plant leaves. I had lots of people telling me that roly polies don't eat leaves, they only eat the dead matter but I found research online which said otherwise. Fact is, I didn't find anything to help the problem besides the nice hot days because it rained so much last year. Almost impossible to dry out the garden beds. I am hoping I don't have a repeat this year. I had used lots of leaves, compost and other organic matter in my garden beds and I sort of wonder if I had invited the problem by providing ample decaying matter to support a population explosion, then when the compost ran out the population turned to my plants as a food source. It seems logical to me...one of the downsides to using compost?

Eggplant can be used anytime up until the shiny surface becomes dull. They are used as immature fruits. Look for the advertised size of your variety, but note that sometimes they will not get as big as advertised. When they began to lose thier shine, pick them them regardless. As to touching the ground, keep watch, it you have soil organisms that began to damage the end touching the ground, pick them. Some soils are very bad about introducing rot to the end touching the ground, others the fruit can lay on the ground for weeks with no damage.

I would and I do. The leaves do nt get much sun and can transfer disease from the ground to the plant. They also give the ants a roadway to the tender leaves up top. I find that they get yellow anyway. Do your tomatoes a favor and take those bottom leaves off with some scissors.

"Carpenter ants feed on rotten wood." Carpenter ants live in wood, and prefer rotten wood to excavate galleries, but they do not actually eat wood like termites. This is one of the ways to spot carpenter ant holes. Frass is the name given to bug debris and it is often spotted near carpenter ant holes. Undergroud termites actually consume and digest the cellulose in wood and do not normally leave debris that is easily visible (they often use it to help make tunnnels from the ground to the wood under attack).
