Memo ~ Haven't seen you in here in quite awhile. Hope you and yours are doing well. Are you still quilting? I'm sure your gardens are put to sleep for now. Do miss hearing about your life there on the ranch/farm.

Flower I was thinking the same thing, I miss Memo's posts among others, although I haven't been around that long I so look forward to hearing what everyone is up to. You guys will never know how much enjoyment this forum has given me. I don't get out and around much anymore so this has been a real blessing for me. (((Group Hug)))

Guthion is another one that will be sorely missed. Cherry growers really don't have much of a backup plan after it's phased out in the next few years. They have a zero tolerance threshold for cherry maggot (due to stringent requirements of exports, as I recall). None of the proposed replacements for Guthion work as effectively. Currently extension personnel are telling cherry growers to find solutions for maggot before Guthion is completely pulled, but are not really telling them how to do it. Growers are essentially left to themselves to try to figure out some spray program that will work with the current insecticides available. Not to be misunderstood, I think the EPA on the whole has done a good job removing older more dangerous chemistries and encouraging newer safer ones. Although I'm not in complete support for the ban on Guthion and Methyl Bromide (given the increased restrictions for its use i.e. increased buffer zones, monitoring of drift, notification of neighbors, etc) what I'm mostly opposed to is the knee-jerk reactions which seem to be taking place with neonicotinoids and the current bee crisis. As far as competitiveness of U.S. ag, the U.S. farmer has been able to compete w/ countries where labor is very cheap. Traditionally this has been done through automation. A combine running through a field at 10 acres/hr. can compete with a Chinaman harvesting the same field, no matter how little he's paid. Some of our crops are still labor intensive (I'm thinking of fruits here) but that is changing. Thinning and harvesting are in the early stages of becoming fully automated. When that happens, cost of labor will no longer be a factor, as is the case currently with field crops. I do think environmental regulation may tip the scale. Not that I'm against regulation, just that we need to recognize there is a fine balance between adequately protecting the environment and rendering our food growing sector non-competitive. Perhaps that sounds like a severe statement, but the uncomfortable truth is that huge yield increases (and thereby the abundant cheap food) we've enjoyed over the last 50 years are largely the result of synthetic fertilizer and effective pesticides. I'm not trying to start an organic vs. conventional debate, just explaining my rationale for claiming environmental regulation can have a pretty big impact. It would be unfortunate if regulation got so aggressive as to take us back to years where pests took a significant percentage of the crop.

Thanks for the kind words, joyful. Does Steve have any children? Other than relishing his good fortune, does he have either concerns or advice for today's college graduates or trade school graduates? No kids. What does that have to do with this discussion? I don't know where that "relishing his good fortune" bit comes from, either. I don't believe in luck or fate. I've worked for my success. I also know that a few decisions made differently would have changed my life greatly. But the same goes for everyone else. So far be it for me to try to lord it over anyone. And, FWIW, I am a long way from retirement -- a few decades, in fact. I have a long time to go (maybe the rest of my life) on this rollercoaster. Kids or not, I have plenty of concerns. I'm concerned that people are more worried about having "stuff" and getting more of it than they care about where it came from. That this dedication to "stuff" is stifling our ability to relate to the rest of the world -- the vast majority of which is not "agonizing" over the decision between a 40" and a 48" stove. That this is the "normal" we are showing our children. I'm concerned that people teach their kids that violence is a bad way to resolve conflicts ("Don't hit!"), yet it supposedly is okay when it comes to dealing with other societies and countries. That people seem to have forgotten that our soldiers from conflicts past sacrificed to keep us free, and that we are now surrendering those hard-fought rights to "leaders" who think that eavesdropping on everyone all the time will net a few more "bad guys" (definition theirs) and letting the government stick its nose into some of the most private decisions individuals and families can make. I'm concerned that our kids are entering a world in which the only constant is change -- their careers, their friendships, their committed relationships. It's sad and stressful to think that none of it is permanent. I'm concerned that our kids almost literally cannot think for themselves -- I'm talking basic life skills like adding up the cost of groceries if a calculator isn't around or not understanding that borrowing money you don't have is a lousy way to get ahead. As far as advice, I'd just urge kids to think. For themselves. Just because things have "always been this way" does not mean that they should stay "this" way. Things -- items, events, happiness, dinner on the table -- do not just appear magically; is what is being received worth what was paid for it? Just because someone (Madison Avenue, the Vice President, a saleswoman) says something does not make it true. And, at work, I would advise them to add value. My workgroup almost was outsourced to India last year, but management found we produced a higher-quality product at the same cost. We plain worked smarter. Learn something new, even for the sake of keeping the brain sharp. Many of the jobs I've had were the result of picking up some skill or knowledge that I, frankly, didn't think had any value at the time. And think seriously about doing work that cannot easily be done by a machine or by someone half a world away. My apologies that this ran so long.

Same here, but tractors, combines, etc., are supposed to be hiway safe, signal lights, flashers, tail lights, head lights, and the like. And farm machinery is covered under ones farm policy. Off road vehicles (quads, dirt bikes, side by sides) do not have signal lights and flashers, and traditionally cannot travel at speeds high enough for hiways. They should, however, be added to ones farm policy, if nothing more to cover fire and theft. I would still suggest that in the case you mentioned, the off road vehicle was not legal to be on the road, no matter what the operator was using it for, and as such, he would be libel. On the other hand, the hit and run vehicle should have also been fined and paid his own fees for leaving the scene of an accident, IMO. But, who can read what goes on in the mind of those who make those decisions. Anyway, Reggie and I do not have to be on any public road, and the private road is that, private, and so I can travel it without that worry. As for Kobi, I hope she changes her mind and decides to ride with me. Love her company! And love the fact you thought enough about us to give me the heads up. Thanks.

Ah ha, Patti ~ I forgot about the wedding. I'm sure that's kept her busy, plus ranch work and getting ready for winter. I believe I missed her post at Thanksgiving time. Which thread is it under?

We all have so much on our minds these days, how can we possibly keep it all in our heads? This morning I got a call from a dear friend who said "I'm looking forward to seeing you on Friday!" I said, "What's happening on Friday"?
Dead silence.
Then she says, "You're coming to MY PARTY and bringing your lasagna I HOPE."

"I am? . . .Oh yeah"!

Hi Everybody!!! I'm jumping up and down and waving over here in Nebraska ;)

I'm fine. We've been pretty busy around here getting ready for winter, doing school stuff with DD2, going to the city for bridal showers, quilting and you name it. I've dropped by and read briefly off and on but just haven't had time to post much since I've started keeping a blog. And doing that pretty sporadically too I might add. I have missed all of you though and I'll try to do better in the future. We're almost ready to settle in for the winter so things should get better around here and give me a little more time for myself..and all of you!

Good to see a post from you. I took a look at your blog. The Wedding Quilt is spectacular!!! I'm in the "red" stage of my life (whatever that means) and I want everything to be the color red. Needless to say, I love the color of the quilt. Hope Jack is doing better today. He's such a cute little fellow and I know you and DH love him so. I'll say a prayer that he has a speedy recovery. The piece about Esther was heart wrenching. We went through a similar situation with my dad. Try to post as often as you can and have a wonderful Christmas!

Memo ~ So great to hear from you. I also read your blog and your wedding quilt is just beautiful! Your daughter and her husband will love it. I love the way you write and your story about Ester touched my heart. And poor sweet Jack, I do hope he recovers nicely.

Yes, Nebraska is all over the news here today and for the wrong reasons, I'm afraid... :-( When I first heard the news my heart dropped because I thought of you and your family, then realized it was in a different place. Such a tragedy!

MeMo, I also keep an eye on your blog when time allows and what can I say? You know I'm the number 1 fan of your writing. I agree, your post about Esther was very emotional. Please give a tight as possible a hug to Jack and tell him Timmy and I wish him a speedy recovery.

Hi MeMo, just been reading through some of your blog. I can see your life is very full, a lot of hard work but also a lot of joy. Oh my, the wedding quilt is so beautiful that daughter of yours is one lucky gal, she is going to have something to cherish forever. I hope Jack is coming along nicely, Jack Russels are tough little dogs DS2 has two, one got nailed by a cougher but has recovered nicely, the cougher didn't as I explained in another post. Anyways, if I don't see you posting before Christmas heres wishing you and yours a very merry christmas and the very best for the coming year.

Thanks to all of you for missing me. I'm so glad that those of you who read my blog find it interesting in some way. It is really a challenge to find something to write about every few days. Sometimes I have many things to write about and other days nothing new or unusual comes along. I know that a lot of people like reading about the farming and ranching aspects but honestly the big things in those subjects only really happen a couple of times per year. I think that pictures of the wheat or corn growing would be pretty dull for the most part so I try to post about a lot of other things too.

My post on Esther was not meant to bring sadness to others though I can see how it would (and I'm sorry if it made any of you sad). I wrote about it because it has been such a journey the past few years dealing with the sickness' and deaths of so many of my own family members. It wasn't until this last little while that it all finally sunk in. At that point I realized that death is part of the journey of life. Of course I have always known that in a simple sort of way, but until last week I never realized that people actually think about it in their own minds and make conscious decisions about it. For me, that realization took the scariness, that some contributers mentioned, away from the subject. I'm much more at peace with the whole dying issue now and I thank Esther for giving me that gift.

Eduarda, when I talk about going to the city in my writing, Omaha, Nebraska is where I am talking about. Both of my older kids, grandson, most of my sisters and their families and many many other family members and friends live there. My heart stopped in my throat yesterday when my daughter called to tell me what happened and attempted to ward off a heart attack when I heard the news on the TV. I haven't looked at the list of victims yet which I understand has been published. I know that somewhere on that list I could very well find a name of someone who is somehow connected to someone that I know, love or care about. I lived in Omaha for the majority of my life. The Mall where this tragedy occurred yesterday is just a couple of city blocks from my former home. My family and I spent untold hours there when we had nothing better to do. It all seems very surreal. I'm just deeply saddened over the entire incident.

Jack is better today. At least the shivering has stopped. Rick gave him another shot of antibiotic last night and he's sleeping soundly today. I'm sure he'll be fine in time. For those of you who are familiar with Jack Russells you know how weird it is to keep these little balls of energy down. Literally. They are the most jumping, running, hunting little dogs I've ever known. I kind of miss him being under foot all the time but I know that will change again soon. LOL!

Your blog was wonderful to read. Your post about Easter was touching. Such a wise woman and a great friend you have. I hope I grow old with the attitude and wisdom such as she.

Thank you, all, for your kind comments.

Jack is off to the vet this morning. The antibiotics seemed to be helping some but since he won't stop licking the wound it is just making the tissue around it weak and oozy. Gross! So we'll see what the vet has to recommend. Perhaps one of those cones or something. We are worried that the wound will get too large to heal with just the sutures in it. I can't even imagine having to pack the thing. Your prayers are appreciated.
