Cedrus deodora Spring Hardiness

Have Cedrus deodora ``Karl Fuchs'' ``Eisregen'' ``Eugene''. All made it through -18F degrees with no burn. All are showing about 1/2 in. green. They are talking 23F degrees Tuesday morning. Anyone with experience as to what will happen to the new growth.

Hi Bluetree,

Can you tell me more about the Cedrus deodara 'Eugene'?
I never heard about this cultivar.
Can you also provide a picture of this plant?

Hi Bluetree. I would also be interested in seeing photos of your deodara cultivars and how they are doing in Z5. Where are you in Indiana -- northern part of the state I assume?

I have the same worries with the upcoming cold temperatures with our deodaras -- especially Karl Fuchs which is actively breaking bud.

Glad to see others pushing the limits with these beautiful trees. You never know how they'll really perform unless you try.

Thanks for the report. FWIW none of my firs were injured even in the slightest. Not even a tiny bit of browning or bleaching. Those are 2 firma 9-12', 1 pindrow 4', 1 ernestii 4', and seedling delavayis, alba, cephalonica, nordmanniana subsp. equitrojanis. Of course the seedlings, luckily, would have been mostly snow covered during the 3F freezes. My 'Shalimar' had just a bit of needle drop and browning of some needles. That's to be expected I think. The original Arnold Arboretum article states that it was damaged at -6F in Boston in the 70s or 80s but recovered. It's probably not quite as hardy as the other hardier C. deodara...because it wasn't really selected for it. It was just a nice looking tree in the zn 9 Shalimar Gardens in Srinagar, India. Deodora Cedar: Snow Sprite or Silver Mist

Do you mean Snow Sprite...your inside note said Snow White? :-) There are three deodoras in this plant series.....Cream Puff, Silver Mist and Snow Sprite. The primary characteristic that is common to all of them is their coloration. In my warm climate they are all a soft almost sea foam green color with lighter colored tips in spring and early summer. Cream Puff is the largest.....considered a true dwarf. Mine grows about 12" or so a year. It's currently a 10' tall and wide cone shaped tree. People love that its needles stay pretty soft to the touch. Mine gets morning shade but full blown afternoon blazing sun. It went through our two record scorching summers just fine...with virtually no needle burn. But the creamy colored tips turned more of a golden yellow until finally turning green. Next is Silver Mist. The coloration is almost identical to Cream Puff. It also is as fat as it is tall. Maybe even fatter. In fact if its growth rate wasn't closer to 6-12" per year, you couldn't hardly tell Cream Puff and Silver Mist apart. It's tips also are not quite as creamy. This tree also takes the heat and sun really well. The third is Snow Sprite. It's the baby of the group. It grows at a much slower rate.....maybe 3-6" a year. It's colors are also lighter, staying almost completely creamy colored for a lot of the year. This one does burn, so I've had to grow it in fairly significant shade. And it's needles are also stiffer to the touch. Hope that helps. Mark

"The Patkia cultivars of deodara seem to be getting harder and harder to find for some reason." A lot of obscure, hardier and/or slow growing cultivars of anything are getting hard to find. If you're a wholesaler with a fixed size field and fixed amount of human capital, why grow a hardy variety when 95% of your C. deodara sales are going to be in milder places like the SE, CA, or PNW? I don't know for a fact but I bought an 'Eisregen' (IIRC) liner from Camforest and though it eventually died of neglect (I admit this happens more often than it should!) it was agonizingly slow growing for a couple years. I mean, a 3-4" inches each year slow...so I suspect the cold hardy ones grow slowly compared to the robust zn 8 forms. This makes biological sense to some degree. Thus the nurseryman has to question whether to tie up his fields with a niche product. There is (used to be?) a conifer nursery near New Windsor or Mt. Airy that would have had those. Somewhere east of Frederick but not in HoCo. I'll try to find the name if you want. He used to show up at the Ladew Garden Day but might be going into semi-retirement. John Shelley in York County had a good variety of hardy cedars too, but have long since closed. You've been to Patuxent Valley Nurseries, right? He probably once had them but seemed to be easing into semi-retirement, and that was several years ago!

I was seriously considering fencing them during winter - I think you just sold me on it. I have 8 large norways that have been on the property for 10 years now and have never been so much as touched by deer. Same with my two globose/montgomery pungens that I planted many many years ago. The deer in my area are odd; I've seen their blood on hollys and roses that they clearly ate... but the don't touch my hemlock or my neighbors hemlock ( I do spray it with deer-off on occasion though, and it's surrounded by 'justin brouwer' boxwood that seems to repel deer). They have a very odd taste in foliage around here. Hostas are their favorite. We also do not have any rabbit issues here, which is ironic because I have a rabbit thats basically a cat, free roaming, perfectly litter trained, comes when called, etc. but the one thing I've never been able to fully train out of her is her tendency to chew all of my wooden furniture.... Oh and I'm embracing the coniferitis, its such a cool hobby when you can add something significant to your collection for under $30! edit: look what just came in the mail, my 'Bruns'! edit2: yes thats a second 'Firefly' in the back, the nursery had another and I got it as a gift for my sister and her new husband for their new house.

Freeze if not protected.

The big April cold snap two years ago froze all new growth off my deodara's.

They are saying 27F. tonight and 22F. Monday night. I am in the process protecting some Acer palms along with other various conifers and companion plants that could take a hit.

Dave if the new growth does freeze will it form new buds or kill the tree?
Kim I live just south of a line running from Indy to Dayton Ohio.
Eugene is actually a libani not a deodara sorry about that. Mine is a rooted cutting that came from Forest Farm. The mother tree is in a cemetary in Greensburg IN. I will try to get a photo. Picea may be able to tell more about how it was found or maybe Eugene will, he checks out the forum. There is a very large Karl Fuchs and an Eisregen on the north side of Indy. Maybe the owner will post photos if not I will ask if I can. Also I will try to post photo's of mine.

The selection Eugene is the result of testing lots of seedlings to see if any would survive. The owner told me that the original plant actually survived one winter that killed a stenacoma. He also planted it in a very exposed location to test its hardiness as advised by Don Howse and it did fine.

As far as Karl Fuchs goes I have one and it has done very well. I have been told there is very little difference between it and Eisregen by a west cost grower. Eisregen may be a little hardier while Karl Fuchs hold its blue color better. There are report that Karl Fuchs fades to green during the summer but I have not seen that with my plant.
