where is everyone?

The message board has been awful quite the past couple of months. I hope everyone was so busy selling flowers and making alot of money that no one has had time to post. I again am thru selling flowers to much regret and now selling my greenhouse vegetables at a farmers market that is open throughout the winter. I would very much like to have had some flowers to sell now but havn't figured out what I can grow and sell in the month of December and January. Anyone have any ideas about what could have been started in the fall that I could be selling now that would be in the holiday theme and not pointsettas. There is just too much scheduling with that crop. Next year I would like to keep going thru those months.

I want to take this time to wish everyone on the message board that posts a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.I appreciate all the valuble info that gets posted on here.

It would be nice to start a thread on what you have growing now to give everyone an idea of what should be growing and when you see what others are growing, you can figure out what you have forgotten about.

Maybe I can start it and others will chime in and we can get this year ended and the new one started on the right page.

Right now I have snaps, ranaculus, anemone, freesia, stock, lupines, delphinums, sweet peas, bells of ireland, dianthus and few seeded trays started that havn't come up yet so I won't promise you they are growing yet. I also have larkspur, queen annes lace and some sunflowers coming up that have reseeded on their own. What am I missing?

Just an update on the Arnosky's, a customer of mine at the market told me that they have their new barn up and had beautiful fall flowers yet 2 weeks ago and poinsettas and beautiful fall vegetables. She said it was quite impressive.

Funny thing, I was thinking about this forum today and feeling guilty I hadn't been here in a long time! In my garden, I have snow and ice...no greenhouse, so things are dormant. I have lots of extra Christmas greens and sadly too many unsold wreaths. But, I'm going to dig into my catalog pile next week I hope and think about next year.

Your post reminds me of how very different our seasons and climates really are! I probably won't see anything except weeds or grass growing until March! Its been very cold, windy, and/or wet since the day after Halloween. I still have drumstick alliums and eremurus waiting to get in the ground, but can't get to the ground!

My business runs for 6 months, from mid-April to mid-October so I have been enjoying working only one job for the past 6 weeks. I have all my seeds for next year and will begin starting some in a few weeks.

We have had very mild weather here in Michigan. There is no snow on the ground which is not surprising because we've frequently had highs in the fifties over the past couple weeks.

Thank you all for so much for your advice over the past few years. It has really helped me out.

No.. sad to say I haven't driven the 25 miles to go get any of my "old" fish. I have just the one that I couldn't find last fall. Might be cheaper to go to the local pond store and buy a couple of new ones. Many plants are still in pots, but I have this week off so I've been extremely busy hacking out the over-whelming bittersweet, sumac, grape vines, raspberry bushes and assorted weeds to make room for the plants. The weather has been so beautiful this week. We have the pool open (last year it was not open) so it is so much fun to work on the weeds, jump in the pool to cool off, then get back to work. LOVE IT!!!! Then I make a martini and go sit by the pond and feed my one lonely fish. I can get so lost in time just sitting there. It's not big, but it provides whatever my soul needs to re-charge. Only found one tick today and that was still mobile, so I brushed it off and got out of the area. I'll check carefully tonight to make sure none have anchored themselves to my cushy body!!! hahahaha they have plenty of space to do that. I will hate to see vacation come to an end on Monday. I am "practicing for retirement"!!!!

thank you for your input! It's nice to know I'm still "alive." Last year I wrote a note on this forum called "stopped dating." I really thought I had lost interest, then I met someone but that went to hell in a handbasket very quickly ...the "I dont get it, what happened" entry on this forum I wrote about 6 months ago. It's interesting, looking back now, at the personal growth progress I've made since that first entry. That is not to say that starting to date again is necessarily a "great personal growth" but rather all that happened inbetween then and now. I am not a fan of hidden agendas either. life is interesting, and is even more interesting when one realizes it really has a purpose rather than to simply endure the mundane daily routines.

Mohawk is a publicly traded company and is not going to manufacture two different products with the same part number. In fact, they are specifically barred from doing that. However, they do have some leeway in how they handle lower quality items. cpartist gave a good explanation, the way most manufacturers determine quality is by a random sample of finished products, I teach a section on quality control, sample size calculations, and what happens to products that don't meet the standard. Basically, they have to indicate second quality on the items individually or by marking the entire pallet as a lower quality, they can't just segregate it, most manufacturers will shrink wrap the pallets with a new part number on all four sides of the pallet. They can offer these lower quality items as "pallet deals" to various outlets. There are many outlets who want pallet deals and they are not limited to the big box stores, many smaller outlets love pallet deals also. In this case, the devil is in the details, these items do not have the same part number in the manufacturer's system, but the outlets may not mark them with the new part numbers. So what appears in the store as the same part number may actually not be the same part number. To be safe, you should avoid buying in-stock items, this may include items stocked in other locations (depending on whether the big box store is ordering from the manufacturer/distributor or bringing items in from another store). Special order items will always be the same item that is distributed through any tile store (note: you still have to use part numbers). Whether or not the avoidance of in-stock items includes local tile shops is something that can only be answered on an individual shop basis. I suspect most of them are not interested in passing off seconds as first quality, but it isn't unheard of either, so you have to ask the pros in your area. Hi Margee! I've been wondering that myself! I wish I knew the answer. I put out a roll call post a couple of years ago and got lots of replies, but still there is not as much activity as there used to be. That seems to be the case with a lot of the forum pages, not only the state centered ones, but the specialty plant forums as well; although it seems the rose forum is still pretty active. I really miss keeping up with the many friends I've made on here. We had a lot of fun with various games and funny posts! Some of the friends I've made here have became "in person friends" and we visit, chat, and trade plants all year. Now when many of us are more or less 'sheltering in place' it would seem a good time to revive the Texas Garden Web. So everybody whose reading this: post! Put pictures! Ask questions! I think it would help if more people who read posts would comment; even if just a few words. Sometimes we posters get the impression that no one is even reading what we put out there. By the way -- what variety IS that humongous rose bush??? :-)

Rita, I am right here between power outages, pacific storms and the monsoons. Still trying to get my daffodils in as a matter of fact! But when 100 foot douglas firs are flying through the air it is a bit hard to garden. However, I have found a great winter bouquet flower...the amaryllis! my partner and each bought and potted up 3 each of 7 varieties, for a total of 14 different colors and forms and they are so much fun. I hate the way they usually fall over in the pot, but for picking and arranging they are great. They seem to last about 3 weeks as cut flowers. They come in nearly every color and many types, and the bulbs can be regrown again for several years. I held mine back after they arrived for two weeks while my business partner started hers immediately. Hers are just finishing now and mine are just starting. We mix them with evergreens from our woods, flowering winter shrubs, and paperwhites we are forcing. Other things I have used with them that are spectacular are eucalytus and lunaria seed pods. We hope to run these until the forced tulips come on for Valentines day, changing the accompanying foliages from evergreens to pussy willows and forsythia and plum branches late in winter.

IT is going to be tight space under my 3 banks of life when the crates of tulips come in and I am also trying to start seeds!

I'm still right here, but don't check in as much as I used to. All I'm growing right now is snow and ice, since my greenhouse is seasonal and has no skin on over the winter. I'm studying seed catalogs, trying to resist the Select Seeds and Thompson & Morgan catalogs.

The only garden things I'm excited about right now are the HUGE moose prints left in the snow outside the greenhouse skeleton, yesterday, I think.
