Did someone move the party and not tell me?

Even though I'm a relative newcomer to the flower-growing business and to this site, I can't help but notice that the activity here has really taken a nosedive this year. Is there a forum for flower growing and marketing that many people have moved to instead of using GardenWeb? I know that Trish has been a spark plug in the past and has her hands full right now, but a lot of other folks used to post often that we don't seem to hear from lately.

Maybe the downturn here is just due to natural attrition, but if there are other sites that are more active, I would really like to know about them, since I need every bit of help I can get.

Anyone have a thought?

Stay tuned. I shall return soon. I have much to share about the season. Even though I haven't posted much this season, I do, however, enjoy reading your posts. So, please stick around. We learn so much from one another.

Like you, I am anxious for this forum to become more active. I am hoping it is because everyone is busy now and not because they have lost interest.

They are teeny tiny black things contained in a cluster of little tube like structures where the flower was. You'll see them. It's amazing how quicky they grow from such a tiny seed. When the seed pods starts to turn brown and you can see the seeds are ready to fall out you can hold a small paper bag under the stem and cut the pods off with scissors catching them in the bag and then distribute them where you want -- perhaps planting some of them in a pot so you can keep the soil moist and away from pill bugs and snails that might eat the little plants.

I really dislike soffits. And we plan to remove them when demoing outr kitchen. BUT! Your kitchen is nice and bright, and does not feel dark or cramped at all. I would not have noticed the soffits at all if you hadn't mentioned it. You made such good choices with colors etc that the soffits just disappear. I would not prioritize eliminating the soffits.

While ironing tablecloths for the party, I've been thinking about this thread and glue guns. Lars reply especially started my thoughts about how I could use the glue gun in some of my jewelry designs. For the last couple of years, I've been experimenting with dried leaves and flowers. They are very delicate and fragile and I have ruined more than a few carefully placed scenes while trying to glue them into place so I could preserve then in resin. They must be glued down in some way before the resin is poured or they will start floating and moving out of place in the resin before it starts to set. It's very time consuming and fiddly work and waiting for the glue to try while holding the flowers/leaves in place is very tedious. So my thought was that if I can get better control of the glue gun and expel tiny pin points of glue rather than big blobs, the glue's quick drying action would be perfect for my needs. Maybe something like putting it on a toothpick and then applying would work. The quick drying would also mean that the leaves/flowers wouldn't get wet and saturated from the glue like it does with other types of glue I've tried. Getting wet make the flowers even more fragile. The other thing I don't yet know is how or if the glue gun glue will react to the resin. Resin can be fussy stuff too. I see a lot of experimenting in my future, but I am very excited about getting in the studio to see what I can come up with. This pendant took forever and I think the glue gun would have made it a much easier and less time consuming project. The hat was all for fun, but I'm deadly serious about my jewelry and ways to improve my product. Thanks again to Lars and to the rest of you who have given me ideas to ponder while ironing. Speaking of ironing, I'd better get back to it!

Ditto. I would love to see more activity here, but I realize that everyone is busy and hopefully having a successful season.

In the meantime, I jump on every post I see, lol, because I learn so much here and am always looking to learn more.

Hey, I am lurking here, trying to soak up all I can from y'all, so please don't leave. Or at least tell me where you're going! :)

Let me introduce myself. I have been a part-time horticulture student for the past six years (I'm an older stay-at-home mom), and soon I will graduate. Well, in a few more semesters (grin). There isn't anything I enjoy more than gardening, so I'm sure that will always be part of "The Plan". I'm taking a class now in floral design; since the part that fascinates me most so far is how to condition the flowers, I see a clearer direction to where this will lead me. I'm going to try my hand at the local farmer's market next year!! So, don't go away. I need you and value your advice.

I'm still here, just been too busy cleaning up after Ike to visit. 70mph sustained wind force for who knows how many hours, sure did a number on the flowers, Only thing that wasn't damaged were 800 lilies in crates which I put in a barn to weather the storm. Everything else was either flattened or tore up on the Hortnova. Week following was spent replanting and cutting everything back. Now I'm cutting certain flowers that are growing from Horizontal stems rather than vertical.
Thinman you'll find that the forum will start picking up again now that some people's growing seasons are over. I'm still growing and already seeding Spring Crops whereas, you guys up north don't have to do that for awhile yet.

I am a lurker. I sure do like to read all your posts but I don't have much to offer since I am new at this. I sold flowers last year at the local farmers markets and learned alot about what to do and some of what not to do. I think I posted those ideas as they happened. I am still looking for something to spray my sun flowers with to stop the pollen form making such a mess when it drops. I have tried hair spray, thought for sure that would work, but it didn't. Clear paint didn't even work. I know florists spray their flowers but I don't know what or why.

Owl, have you tried growing pollenless sunflowers, like the ProCuts or Sunbright or Sunbright Supreme? Not only do they not have pollen but they last longer in the vase - a happy customer is a repeat customer.

Owl, Pudge gave you great advice about the sunflowers. I sold ProCut, Sunny, Sunbright Supreme, and Sunrich Orange the last two years and had no complaints about pollen. I even converted a couple of people who said that they stayed away from sunflowers because of the pollen. They came back for more.

I have not tried the pollenless sun flowers. Are those seeds that have to be ordered? I will have to do a search for them. Is ProCut the brand name?

ProCuts and the others are sold by different seed companies like Harris or Johnny's, for example. I guess I wouldn't call ProCut exactly a brand name, more like a variety name that is sold by different companies. You're right about ordering them, as they probably won't show up in store seed displays.
