How late is too late to plant in ground

I have a couple of trees (meyer and Satsuma) that I would like to transfer into ground, but was wondering if its just too late in the year. We typically don't start getting cool weather until late December, so that would give 2 to maybe 3 months to get established. However, I was concerned that the trees would soon go dormant, so therefore, not root in very much and maybe get killed off in a freeze.

just looking for any opinions you might have.
