Largest Blooms?

I've grown 'Emory Paul' and the blooms were huge, but I've heard that some can get even bigger. What dahlia cultivars produce the largest blooms?

Penn's Gift is a monster, fuller than Emory Paul. Ivory Palaces is large and full. Kelvin Floodlight- a large dinnerplate. There are probably 10,000 others..

The summer of 2003 we had a Wanda's Moonlight with a bloom that measured 17" across & 14" deep! It was the first bloom & down in the plant so I couldn't get a really good picture of it but there are pictures of later blooms on the same plant in our albums at the site given in the previous answer. Sir Alfred Ramsey is another biggie but very frequently will "beard" so is not as attractive as some. We won Best AA & Biggest in show in 3 shows in 2003 with Zorros that were huge. They have a wonderful form & don't sag on you! Love those AA's that are a bouquet in themselves!

Mostly I grow species, but always get some kind of cattleya hybrid at our society's annual "swap" - this one certainly has the biggest flower I've ever seen (and I grow both digbyana and warscewiczii - I think both have some genetic material added to this flower). It is in bloom now, with 3 flowers and 3 buds, and the flower is just shy of 9" across. Fragrant. It is BC Languedoc 'Singapore Welcome'. Cheers - Nancy ">

Peace is beautiful, but for best fragrance and at least a 5" bloom, I vote for Sweet Surrender. It's wonderful :) Looking at these pictures, I'm thinking my two Sweet Surrenders would look great with a Peace rose...I may have to go get one for the front garden! I'm sorry I've never heard of "Schribners 99". I thought I would chime in and say that the largest iris I've seen locally was 'Supreme Sultan'. I would guess that it was 40"+ tall and the bloom might have been 8" in height from tip to tip, but not 1' across. As far as purchasing it, I would just about guarantee that almost any of the growers listed in other posts regarding sources would have it for less than $10. If you are only concerned with width then a flat TB or a japanese iris would be your best bet. I thought that 'New Perspective' was a pretty neat flat one. It was probably 7" across but since it's a 2004 it will cost more than most. I haven't the slightest idea who might have it for sale though. This is NP in the Missouri Botanical Gardens during last year's convention. I hope this helps somehow. Brock

Hoyas with the largest blooms

Most of the large blooming hoyas require high light and heat. Many belong in the eriostemma section. There are fragrant bloomers. Eriostemma gigas and eriostemma lauterbachii have the largest blooms. Gigas smells like a stapeliad (so it stinks to attract flies), and lauterbachii reportedly has a chocolate-like scent. Neither are easy to bloom, but grow very fast in high light and heat. Hoya imperialis likes high light and warmth, as well. It is fragrant. Hoya onchyoides, hoya archboldiana and hoya macgillivrayi might do well for you, but they will need higher light conditions (suppliment with light bars), and you will need to make absolutely sure that there is no cold draft. Some are reportedly fragrant. If you are deadset on a hoya with fragrant, larger blooms that will do well in your east window, try hoya calycina. The blooms are not huge, like the above hoyas, but they are large enough. Calycina prefers a 10-15 degree drop in temps at night, and blooms in response to shorter daylight hours in the cooler months.

My Maki was just as big as my Emory Paul, about 15 inches.

Maki is a variegated sport of Emory Paul... this means that they share virtually the same genetics, with a slight aberration in the coloration genes. Potential size stays the same typically in sports.

If a new dahlia grower is interested in the 'giants,' check out US dahlia vendors/growers that offer AA-sized varieties. 'AA' is dahlia-nerd talk for 'giant.'

You can also search a really useful database of dahlia varieties called DahliaAddict for the large ones, of any color/form imaginable. Have fun!
