White Grainy Stuff on Lime Bark

User

My Persian lime has developed white grainy stuff on the bark, from the ground to about 2 feet up. The only thing I can think of to compare it to is termite poop. I also have a couple of cracks in the bark. What's going on?

The tree gets a lot of water. Until recently, it was planted in bare black dirt. I have mulched it (cypress mulch) a couple of times, but the yard guys blow it away. I just found out mulch is a bad idea, so I cleared an 8" circle around the trunk. I also hit the bark with copper. I have sprayed it with copper and/or Daconil several times since I bought it. That was last year in late summer.

This tree has been doing great, and the limes are wonderful. I would hate to see it die.

I'm near Miami.
