One year old seeded lawn too thin
Comments (1)What do you mean, "inadequate" top soil? Not thick enough? Needs fertilizers? I suspect that when you seeded you got so excited to see grass popping up after only one week that you started to back off on the watering too early. Ryegrass sprouts in a week. Fescue sprouts in 2 weeks. KBG sprouts in 3 weeks. But they only sprout with constant moisture. Do you remember if you watered 3x per day for 3 full weeks? KBG is the grass that would have normally filled in all the "holes" between the clumps of ryegrass and fescue. Creeping red fescue will eventually do it but KBG is the workhorse. Reseed NOW (!!!) with KBG and fertilize when it is tall enough to mow (4 inches mowed back to 3). You don't have time to wait on this. You didn't mention if you have any shade. If you have shade, then forget about the KBG and focus on getting lots and lots of fescue seed down to make a dense turf. Again, do it now....See MoreHave you heard the one about the 30,000 year old seed?
Comments (1)More scientific information is leaking out. They did some in vitro propagation on some tissue that was with the seed, they did not actually germinate the seed....See More5 year old seed grown Longan blooming?
Comments (11)Hi Tony Doe, Your Longan there looks healthy to me and with a few new branches of new reddish leaves. They look very pretty there. I'm thinking if they have new flushes, they ought to have blooms? I'm asking this question as one of mine is also sending out a lot of new flushes and I'm hoping that eventually they'll push out some blooms as well. I've been feeding them with fish emulsion, liquid compost and epsom salt. By the way, thanks so much for the link. The guy there suggested fertilizing with potassium chloride (?) I wonder if that is something you can get from Home Depot. I've read that this chemical has to be handled with cautious as it's something they use in fire crackers. But, if it works, I'm at least going to try as I can't wait to make my bloom for me this year. I don't have luck with growing longans as long as I can remember. I now realized that they are susceptible to web worm and they do not like shady areas. I planted a few of them in the south side of my yard where there are two huge oak trees overhanging and they are host to webworms. So, they died young with disease even though they were planted in the ground. Last year, I planted two more new ones in my north side with plenty of sunshine and they seem to be doing well. Here are some pictures. Biew Kiew is blooming and Kohala is sending out new flushes. Please update how your longan is doing. I do hope it will bloom for you soon. #1 = Longan Kohala Flushing #2 - Longan Kohala (almost 5.5 ft in height now) #3 = Longan Bieu Kiew (almost 4.5ft in height) #4 = Bieu Kiew's blooms....See More4 seed grown 3 year old Meiwa kumquat trees.
Comments (16)I feed them Miracle Gro 24-8-16 half strength weekly or when needed. They get 16 hours of light daily from the time they come inside till they go outside. lots of light. The temperature inside the can is 10F higher than the room air and is humid. Light put on new shoot outside in early fall. Seedlings under a bucket light with a daylight 23 watt CFL. Temperature rise 20F. 85F inside. 3/4 of the growth happen during fall, winter, and spring. This gives me about a 6 year old plant in 2 years. Beyond this the grow is only a little better than normal. Steve...See Moretcamp30144(7B N.ATLANTA)
