Planning my first Dahlia experience...

Hello all:

I have just discovered Dahlias and find them absolutely beautiful. Since I have never grown any type of "showy" flower before, I want to give them an initial try, but without a lot of expense (i.e., $5-$10/tuber on the net). I have seen some tubers on display in Home Depot. Based on some on-line reasearch, I realize that these are likely "no-name, non-show grade" flowers.

What I wanted to know is, will they actually grow, and will they be pretty? Since I haven't gotten totally addicted yet (although based on the comments here, that's just a matter of time), I plan to try about 8 plants on the east side of the house.

And, if I do buy these tubers, should I pot them up and see if they can grow first, or just put them in the ground on May 15th and hope for the best.

Thanks in advance,

Igwiz
