Earthway seeder
Comments (1)I bought a Jang JP-1 last year and have found it a great improvement over my Earthway, worth the price difference. The Jang is much heavier making easier to keep in the ground, though with my clay soil I really wish it were twice a heavy. The JP-1 is better with small seed crops but it does work for large seeds like sweet corn, but expect some misses and doubles. The Jang uses rollers instead of plates, with the roller selection based on seed size. Depending on the seed size sweet corn will require roller size A, AA or N, at least the seven varieties I've planted with it. Spacing is set by the choice of front and rear gears used, six come with the unit. Everything, but planting depth which requires a wrench, can be adjusted with fingers in the field, no tools needed. There is even a copy of the spacing guide attached to the inside of the chain shield. My only real complaint has been the planting shoe. Its used to set the planting depth and attaches to a steel rod held in place with a set bolt. The rod will bend back if you hit a stone or patch of hard clay. I've cut a selection of wood blocks to set between frame and back end of the shoe. The block height used varies with the planting depth. I plant half an acre of sweet corn each year. Doing that with the Earthway was a struggle but the JP-1 has really made job easier. I'm serious considering (i.e. saving my lunch money) to buy a Jang TDR for next year. The TDR is designed for larger seed like corn and pumpkins and should handle them more preciously then the JP-1. The downside is the TDR is $650 compared to $380 for the JP-1....See Moreseeding mesclun with Earthway seeder
Comments (4)We are also using an earthway to seed ingredients for a mesclun mix. It's not ideal, but does the job! I too have used the lettuce plate (with 2 passes on top of each other) and had decent success. I have also used the corn/pea plates, which seed a heavier clump of lettuce every few inches. It is worth experimenting with the other plates if you want to increase your seeding rate. One big problem I have had with the earthway is using it for seeding mustards and other brassicas. The radish plate works well initially, but the small round seeds get stuck in behind the plate and get crushed... I haven't found a solution to this. I am curious about the pinpoint seeders but not ready to spend the money quite yet. Roxanne...See MoreEarthway pelleted carrot plate
Comments (17)I just made a pass once over with the Earthway radish plate. It seemed to drop the seeds at a reasonable spacing, but much of the pelleted seed coating was ground off the seeds. The actual seeds that fell into the soil seemed to be intact pellets, but when I went to dump out the rest of the unused seeds, about half of what I was dumping out was clay dust... Have you folks had an experience like this? What could be a solution? I can't seem to find anyone selling the pelleted seed plate for Earthway anymore, and some folks are suggesting that the Earthway is just not built for pelleted seeds, period. If that's the case, what is a better seeder for pelleted seed? Glaser? Jang?...See MoreSeeder for Fluffy Native Warm Grass Seeds
Comments (0)I would like to convert some of my pasture to NWSG. I plan to start with a 2 acre field that has had nothing but annual rye for a couple of years. I ordered a mix of debearded big bluestem, little bluestem, and indian grass. I have already killed the rye grass and disked and smoothed the field. I had planned to cultipack it spread the seed, and then cultipack it again. The seed dealer said I should be able to use my Baltimatic spreader with the agitator arm attached, but today I could not get the agitator arm to attach. The attachment pin is frozen. I have thought about ordering an ATV type Truax seed slinger but the cost is about $700, and I hate spending that much unless I am confident it will work. Are there any less expensive seeders that would work? Even the debearded seed is still too fluffy to get through my earthway seeder. Thanks, Charles...See Moresgiesler
