Well, it is a rainy Saturday Morning here. This week saw the return of Summer, if only for a few days, but now it seems Fall is back. Oh well, picking up some more bulbs to get planted, and looking for bulb food - how did that suddenly become so hard to find??!!

Well, I had saved a great link for a question this week - can I find it?? Noooooooo. Oh well, desperation has set in and I ended up surfing the web, and landed on This Day in Music. This should be fun.

1. In 1957, Elvis was voted the Number 2 singer in the world. Who was voted #1?

2. In 1978, a country music star/legend was abducted, beaten and held in her car for two hours by a kidnapper wearing a ski mask. He held a gun on her and forced her to drive 90 miles from Nashville, Tennessee. She was later released and the kidnapper escaped... Who was the star?

3. In 1962, an instrumental track went on to be the first major hit from a UK act on the American chart also reaching No.1. Any ideas?

4. 1961, Bob Dylan played a showcase at New York's Carnegie Hall. To the nearest hundred, how many people attended?

5. And finally, we lost a great voice on this day in 1970. Who did we lose?

There will be clues, but this shouldn't be too much of a challenge, except possibly for TM - lol. Or perhaps not!! I'll be back with clues for all later this morning! In the meantime, I am off to a neighbouring, quaint town for a little shopping - yes, even in the rain.

Hmmmm, I haven't read through the the rest yet but in my part of the world Elvis came out as #1 in 1954. If it's who I'm thinking it is I smell fix, fix, fix, LOL.

Well, I believe you have all figured it out - it was to allow the knight/warrior to easily mount his steed. I got the info from a web site called The Straight Dope, which is very cleverly written. I will copy right from them, as I like the way it is written. The fact is that most people don't mount a horse from the left side. Most people call a cab. Those having some acquaintance with horsemanship, however, know that the left side is the horse's "near" side while the right side is the "off" side. This is often explained in terms of swords, but we're then obliged to acknowledge obvious fact #2: While a fair number of people still ride horses, you're living in one tough neighborhood if you need to do so while wearing a sword. About those swords. I'm afraid you've gotten the explanation a little scrambled. As you've observed, swords are traditionally worn on the left, since that makes it easier for a right-handed swordsman to pull the sword from its scabbard. If you're wearing a sword on the left, you'll want to mount your horse on its left, since otherwise the sword will get in the way. The practice goes way back before the medieval heyday of knights. In fact, it most likely originated when sword-toting warriors first began riding horses into battle. Let's start with a fundamental fact, essential to understanding equines: The horse isn't a predator--it's prey. Even after millennia of domestication, the horse is physically and mentally hardwired to detect and elude attackers. Its eyes are set on the sides of its head, giving it almost 360 degrees of vision. It sees two monocular fields at once, one through each eye. The binocular vision we human predators take for granted, the horse has in only a small area directly ahead of it. So what it "knows" on one side, it doesn't "know" on the other, until it's been shown. The horse's instincts dispose it to be suspicious of anything new in its environment. The thing behind that rock that wasn't there yesterday could be a lion! What does this have to do with mounting from the left? It means that a horse who's been taught to accept being mounted only from one side may be perfectly docile when the rider clambers aboard on that side, yet spook and refuse to stand still if approached from the unfamiliar direction. That's why authorities on horse training (including our old friend Xenophon) recommend teaching horses to be mounted from the off side, so that they'll stand still for it if circumstances demand that the rider get on from that side But why prefer the left side when swords are no longer a problem? Partly it's the inertia of tradition--horses and humans are both creatures of habit. But it's also common sense to have a standard approach. If you didn't know which side a particular horse had learned to be mounted from, you could get a nasty surprise if you tried to get on from the "wrong" side. There you have it - tradition again, with a little common sense thrown in. I believe everyone got, though perhaps not the monocular bit - lol, I'll let that pass!! lol -the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), or as it was originally called - A New English Dictionary on Historical Principles. Unlike most English dictionaries, which only list present-day common meanings, the OED provides a detailed chronological history for every word and phrase, citing quotations from a wide range of sources, including classic literature and cookbooks. The OED is famous for its lengthy cross-references and etymologies. The verb "set" merits the OED's longest entry, at approximately 60,000 words and detailing over 430 uses. That in itself would have been a worthy trivia question!! Plans for the dictionary began in 1857 when members of London's Philological Society, who believed there were no up-to-date, error-free English dictionaries available, decided to produce one that would cover all vocabulary from the Anglo-Saxon period (1150 A.D.) to the present. In 1984, Oxford University Press embarked on a five-year, multi-million-dollar project to create an electronic version of the dictionary. The effort required 120 people just to type the pages from the print edition and 50 proofreaders to check their work. In 1992, a CD-ROM version of the dictionary was released, making it much easier to search and retrieve information. Today, the dictionary's second edition is available online to subscribers and is updated quarterly with over 1,000 new entries and revisions. Though the book has been characterized in media reports as a sequel to Lee's best-selling novel, Go Set a Watchman was written in the mid-1950s, before she wrote To Kill a Mockingbird, which was published in 1960. It was set aside when her editor suggested that she write another novel from the young Scout Finch's perspective. The manuscript was then lost for many years, until being rediscovered by her lawyer in the fall of 2014. It will be published as originally written, with no revisions. The phrase is from Isaiah 21: 6, "For thus the Lord said to me: “Go, set a watchman; let him announce what he sees." It is referring to the fall of Babylon. Some publications have called the timing of the book "suspicious", citing Lee's declining health, statements she had made over several decades that she would not write or release another novel, and the death of her sister (and caretaker) just two months before the announcement. NPR reported on the news of her new book release, with circumstances "raising questions about whether she is being taken advantage of in her old age." Some publications have even called for fans to boycott the work. Mainstream news sources, including NPR, BBC News, and Jezebel, have reported that the conditions surrounding the release of the book are unclear and posit that Lee may not have had full control of the decision. However, historian and Lee's longtime friend, Wayne Flynt told the Associated Press that the "narrative of senility, exploitation of this helpless little old lady is just hogwash. It's just complete bunk". Flynt said he found Lee capable of giving consent, and believes no one will ever know for certain the terms of said consent. That having been said, Lee is quite deaf and suffers profound vision loss from macular degeneration. Truman Capote, then Persons, lived next door with his aunts while his mother was in New York. Like Dill, Capote had an impressive imagination and a gift for fascinating stories. Both Lee and Capote were atypical children: both loved to read. Lee was a scrappy tomboy who was quick to fight, but Capote was ridiculed for his advanced vocabulary and lisp. She and Capote made up and acted out stories they wrote on an old Underwood typewriter Lee's father gave them. They became good friends when both felt alienated from their peers; Capote called the two of them "apart people". In 1960, Capote and Lee traveled to Kansas together to investigate the multiple murders that were the basis for Capote's nonfiction novel In Cold Blood. Yep, this is indeed a challenge for me. I'm not yet coming with up with anything, although I can name a few famous/legendary female country music singers that might fit number 4. Duh! I meant number 2.

We'll see what time, thinking and hints might do for me. Are you sure you don't have any more science questions?

I think I know 1 and 2. Waiting for clues.
Like TM I am more apt to get the science questions but I love music and have a smattering of music knowledge and like music questions as well.

#1 is safe as vanilla, and mostly a cover artist. According to an opinion poll of high school students in 1957, the singer was nearly the "two-to-one favorite over Elvis Presley among boys and preferred almost three-to-one by girls...". During the late 1950s, he made regular appearances on ABC-TV's Ozark Jubilee, hosted by his father-in-law.

#2 was Divorced 5 times!!

#3 is kinda spacey.

#4 I saw Dylan live once, on a double-bill with Joni Mitchell. It sounds like the '61 concert was less of a zoo!!

#5 knew Big Brother was watching her!!

Had a great shop in the nearby town - lots of artists galleries and antique shops. After Joyce had groomed the dogs we all went to the Farmer's market where they were having a chili cook-off in aid of the local Food Bank. $5 gave you a taste of 3 different chilis, a fresh made bun and a vote. Yum.

Number one sounds like maybe a country/pop artist. Trying to work vanilla in there somewhere.

It sounds like Dylan's concert wasn't a smash. I don't think I had even heard of him yet in 1961.

1. Are we talking white bucks here? When I read boring I immediately thought of Mr. Bland and seeing Annette and Bobbie's answers sealed the deal.

2. Couldn't settle on any one lady, but I guess I know who TW is.

3. When I wrote that I wouldn't "tell", I was thinking of Telstar. Listening to it nowadays, I can't figure out what the big deal was.

lol. Everybody got it!! Great. Some days just resonate, eh!!??

1. Yep, Pat Boone was number one. There had to be something in the water!!

2. Tammy Wynette was called the "First Lady of Country Music". Multiple hits and multiple divorces marked a tumultuous life. She got no rest, even in death, as she was buried, exhumed, buried again, and had her name changed a couple of times on her tombstone. Kinda feel sorry for her.

3. Yep, Telstar, by the Tornados. The record was named after the Telstar communications satellite, which was launched into orbit on 10 July 1962. It was written and produced by Joe Meek, and featured a clavioline, a keyboard instrument with a distinctive electronic sound. It was recorded in Meek's studio in a small flat above a shop in Holloway Road, North London. "Telstar" won an Ivor Novello Award and is estimated to have sold at least five million copies worldwide. It was covered by the Ventures.

4. In 1961, Bob Dylan played a showcase at New York's Carnegie Hall to 53 people.

5. US singer Janis Joplin was found dead at the Landmark Hotel Hollywood after an accidental heroin overdose. Joplin had the posthumous 1971 US No.1 single 'Me And Bobby McGee', and the 1971 US No.1 album 'Pearl'.

Ohh, telestar satellites! Nice! Thanks for the entertaining question, Nancy. You were very generous with the rewards.

Perhaps Pat Boone was rated first due to to movie April Love released that year. I knew/know most of Boone's music but once I saw and heard Elvis I became a lifelong fan.

Read a bio by one of Wynette's daughters a few years ago where she said her mother admitted that the kidnapping was fake to hide the fact that her husband was beating her. Sad life.

I remember this song but don't remember it being as grating as the link version.

Not a fan of Dylan's voice but he is a great songwriter.
