If we read the original post, you'll see that rashomon is not allowed to put up anything that will provide shade on the FIRE ESCAPE (this is not a patio or porch). Double potting is truly the best bet. You could even use something like vermiculite or bubble wrap as an insulator between the two pots. If you water thoroughly in the evening or early morning, your plants will have the time to take as much water as possible into their little plant bodies before the heat of the day commences. If the containers are relatively small, you may need to water twice a day. Watering is a beneficial practice for plants...not only does it provide the required H2O, but flushes the soil with a new supply of fresh oxygen. I respectfully disagree that you should keep a full water tray under your plants at all times. If you do anything to create a water-logged situation, then roots begin to die right away. Then your plant is really in trouble. Plant trays should be emptied a short time after they fill up following a good drenching. Hopefully, you are using a soil-less potting mix (peat based) and is porous and well-drained. Avoid adding sand, clay, compost, or anything like that to a container as those ingredients clog up the small pores in the soil system that ought to be filled with water and air.

I'm not one of those of people who say's you have to do it my way. Having said that I thought I'd say afew words about Miracle Grow. When I lived in Edmond I built 2 greenhouses attached to the back of my house. The smaller one(about 300 sq. ft.) was the first one I built and I liked it so much I built a 650 sq. ft next to it. The big one was for tropicals and the smaller one was for raising seeds. At the time I had'nt even heard of coir so I just used MG. For seed starting I had 2 six ft. rubber heat mats on a thermostat. Here are some of the plants I have started from seed using MG. Larkspur,petunia,zinnia cyphomandra(tree tomato),alyssum,ageratum,centaurea,balsum,amaryllis,gomphrena cosmos,mallow, morning glory,passiflora,pinks,salvia,stock,tomatoe,monarda,pansy,rose moss,impatiens,angel blush,and peppers to name a few. I have a Blood orange,a Satsuma mandarin,and a Calamondin growing beautifully in MG now. I have never had a problem with MG even if I too have occasionally found a chunk of wood in it. It works for me and now after the above list you can tell why I dont know squat about growing corn or carrots etc.

As far as the potting soil goes it will depend on the individual needs of each tree. It is very important if either tree requires a fast draining soil. Lack of proper drainage can cause many problems and also root rot which can be fatal. I would check with nurseries/ growers on the needs of these trees. Andrew
